How would you feel about visiting a country where people routinely walk around brandishing firearms ?

That sounds somewhere like Colombia or Haiti; maybe parts of Mexico.

I daresay some will immediately think "United States of America" but though I have not been there, and I do know a lot of Americans have a near-fetish for guns and things called "amendments" (do civilians really need assault-rifles?), I very much doubt most of them normally go around "brandishing" their guns.

Anyway I'm sure someone would advise me which areas are best avoided, and there are parts of British cities I'd be afraid of at night; although if attacked there I'd far, far be more likely be coshed or stabbed than shot. Not that that's much comfort.

A friend told me of a curious incident in the USA a few years ago.

One of his hobbies is caving, and he and a friend visited the USA to attend a caving conference; so perhaps a long way from the nearest "package holiday" destinations for overseas tourists.

They were befriended by one of the locals at the conference, who invited them back to his parents' farm. There the father showed them his private arsenal of about twenty guns ("Oh, some people have far more than that!" they were told); and given a chance at target-shooting on the family's private range.

My pal said he then visited the local shop to buy some beer and replace the ammunition they'd expended.

The beer? No chance: the shop assistant could not understand his UK driving-licence, even though he tried to explain how its number reveals your date-of-birth, so she could not accept he was old enough. (He must have left his passport back with his hosts.)

The ammunition? No problem. Despite being obviously a foreigner unable to prove his identity easily to the shop staff, in an area that probably sees few foreign visitors!
