WASHINGTON — The Trump administration proposed a rule on Wednesday night intended to prevent undocumented immigrants from receiving federal housing assistance, the latest step in its efforts to ramp up enforcement of the nation’s immigration laws.
The proposal, according to an administration official, is intended to overturn what the official described as a Clinton-era loophole that allowed some undocumented immigrants to obtain public housing without revealing their citizenship status. The rule would ensure that the social safety net is awarded only to verified American citizens and legal residents.
The long waiting lists for public housing prompted the crackdown, the official said, adding that the rule would affect about 25,000 households.

@winchesterbros Same topic, just worded a bit disingenuously.
But it’s the same stuff, really - the mixed household “loophole” that lets legal residents in a mixed-status familes receive housing assistance (prorated to cover only eligible residents).

I've never really agreed with the idea that being born on one side of an arbitrary invisible line should be a serious barrier to existing on the other side. Native-born Americans didn't accomplish anything to particularly deserve to live in the states; it was essentially an accident. So why should we base the priviledge of being here off of something that the people themselves don't actually control?
BlueVeins · 26-30
@winchesterbros What if the drug in question is ethyl alcohol?
"Although immigration has occurred throughout American history, large-scale immigration has occurred during just four peak periods: the peopling of the original colonies, westward expansion during the middle of the 19th century, and the rise of cities at the turn of the 20th century. The fourth peak period began in the 1970s and continues today." https://www.migrationpolicy.org/article/immigration-united-states-new-economic-social-political-landscapes-legislative-reform this started under jimmy carter.

well, if you are a human being who cares about the welfare of others, consider that there are about ten million undocumented people in the US.. most of them work hard, have families,, and have lived here for many years,, forcing them to go home would cause a huge humanitarian crisis, harm families,, hurt our own economy since we rely on their labor , would cause prices to sky rocket, not to mention would be absolutely terrible for children who have grown up here and don't speak spanish or know any other culture.. it would be cruel and would be the same as shooting ourselves in the foot.
idk i think they should be. you came illegally, take away from people who are doing it right and going through the process to citizenship. other than that its invasion. no country will stand for that.
QuixoticSoul · 41-45, M
@winchesterbros I appreciate the rule of law argument - but most people “doing it right” understand perfectly well that a) the immigration system is capricious and arbitrary, obviously put together and run by xenophobic assholes, and b) illegals don’t play any role in the process and aren’t taking anything away from those of us who went through it.

Oh bless, you didn't have enough room to mention the bit about the Trump campaign encouraging the Russians, or the bit about Manafort telling a Russian oligarch and close Putin associate poll numbers. You also had no room to mention Flynn having phone calls with Putin's people before the inauguration to tell him sanctions would be lifted, imposed because of Russia invading Ukraine.. Oh, and DAG Sally Yates reported that Flynn was a security risk (As did Obama) but Trump still employed him.
And maybe you can throw some light on why Kushner (Who was denied a security clearance by the FBI AND the CIA because he's a security risk) would need a private 'back channel' that was housed in the Russian embassy?
The first volume of the report details numerous efforts emanating from Russia to influence the election. This volume includes a discussion of the Trump campaign’s response to this activity, as well as our conclusion that there was insufficient evidence to charge a broader conspiracy. that right there cleared him from the investigation, that people kept saying he was involved.

@winchesterbros Here is the NPR take:
The rule is intended to prevent people who are in the country illegally from receiving federal housing aid, which the administration argues should go to help only legal residents or citizens.
But the proposal targets 25,000 families that now receive such aid because they are of "mixed" status, which means that at least one member of the family is undocumented while the others are citizens or legal residents. These families now pay higher rents to account for their mixed status.
Under the new rule, those families would lose all of their housing aid, such as vouchers and public housing.
But isn’t it funny how your article omits any mention of these details. Nobody has more right than another to live in a "country" just because they were born there . Borders are artificial.

@artistinresidence same thing and if the government helped our own as much as they do the illegal ones we would be far better of and more citizens would be working. I personally am disgusted that a large part of my taxes pay for these people to get more assistance than people born here.

Because they are human in desperate situation. But most importantly, because we are human. Life is too short. Live it to the fullest by showing empathy.
Artistworkingalone · 56-60, F
@redredred of course not. They are not imported. They have escaped like you and yours escaped to come to US. Migration always creates chaos. And yes there will be resistance but don’t lose hope on humanity. If we cannot or will not legally open our doors to them, at least we can show empathy otherwise. I had two women here going crazy about my post. One an Eastern European, sitting where the right-wing parties are feeding people with fear about immigrants and people are entering the Nazi-crazed mentality of 1930’s. That is not the solution. I hope you agree that unwanted guests does not merit gas chambers. The other had your argument that 1000 migrants will become millions.. your concern is not dumb or selfish. It is a real concern and I respect that but I still think that a desperate child sitting behind bars somewhere in this vast country needs our help.

@Artistworkingalone When mine came, one side of my family fought in every war this country has ever had including the revolution. The other side paid its own way here and waited patiently for the Ellis Island process to be complete and then entered to find work. None of them collected welfare.
The ones who fought in the Revolution didnt flee their home but fought to improve it. The ones who left poverty did so on their own dime, observed the legal process and asked for nothing but admittance.

It's not feasible. The money and time spent identifying, tracking, detaining and deporting would be immense.
Is not hurting anyone. Illegal and legal immigrants bring in millions of dollars in taxes every year. Our agricultural industry depends on them.
Is racist. No one's calling for the detainment of Canadians, Australians, French or anyone else who 'fits in' with the American tapestry fundamentalists would like to maintain.
There's no need. These are citizens of this part of the world. They struggle, fail and succeed and create legacy. Why should they be made to stand apart?

And if anyone want to dispute the label of "criminal" the individual earned that title by breaking in.

I don't know really, they should. And really, it comes down to the fact that they're criminals. They broke the law and should be apprehended accordingly. Plain and simple. This is not racist by any means. I don't buy into that asylum bs. There is a correct way to become a citizen and they're choosing the lazy and illegal way. Instead of calling the US president and government racist, their government, respectively, should be taking concrete steps to improving the lives of their citizens.

The majority of them are seeking assylum. That makes them legal. The argument that they are illegal is just a political ploy to amp up the base.
Seeking assylum is what immigrants do when they are fleeing violence or other harmful things in their own country.
They are human beings. Create a feasible legal way for them to become citizens.

That would be the “Lawful Neutral” option, I suppose. I certainly don’t think it would be unjust to deport them. That’s the law of the land.
On the practical side of things, to actually accomplish this task would require a police state that most of us don’t really want to live with, would have negative economic consequences, and we’d be deprived of quality tacos.
Also, seeing as illegal immigrants commit less crime than the natives, it would boost our crime rates too.

As a general principle, they should. If its that clear cut. However, some countries rely on cheap, undocumented labour to run their economies, which makes them a little hypocritical.. And the children of those without documents born in a country is another issue.
Finally, all civilised nations recognise the need to allow genuine refugees.. So throw that lot into the mix. Once you do, the government has the ability to make it very difficult for any illegal migrant to remain in the country and live successfully. But they seem very unwilling to do that for some reason.
