Nebula · 41-45, F
@SW-User it was when I was in school, and burning ants with a magnifying glass.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
I read when I feel bored, when I am curious about a subject, etc. When I was a teen and had little access to a library I would read about anything non-fiction…magazines if we had any. I also would read parts of the encyclopedia we had at home. That’s basic nerd isn’t it?

SW-User
@cherokeepatti You're a regular Harry S Truman!
From a quick search - "Truman started school in 1892 (he could already read) and by the time he was 14 he had read all the books in the public library of interest to a boy and had read the family Bible 3 times".

Dang! I just edited the Harry T comment - I forgot to add the word "read". The comment now makes sense.
"...he had read all the books... " and NOT "...he had all the books..."

Does anyone know what NERD is? Do u know what a NEBBISH is? And do you know what a TURD is?
Thats what a "nerd" is. A combination of a piece of **** and a big nothing.
So what I do is avoid insulting people with phony cutsey non-compliments and don't use such expressions on myself. Who would?
Thats my answer.

@Shadyglow
In Dr. Seuss's (Theodore Geisel's) 1950 composition of whimsy, If I Ran the Zoo, we have what seems to be the first occurrence of nerd in print:
And then, just to show them, I'll sail to Ka-troo
And bring back an It-kutch, a Preep and a Proo,
A Nerkle, a Nerd, and a Seersucker, too!
In October of the following year, Newsweek carried an article about the latest slang that includes the word nerd. "In Detroit," it notes, "someone who once would be called a drip or a square is now, regrettably, a nerd, or in less severe cases, a scurve."
It's not until the 1960s, however, that nerd (as well as its alternate spelling nurd) takes off and starts appearing more frequently in running text (as opposed to lists of slang). Over the decade and into the '70s, print usage of nerd became truly abundant. It could be said, then, that nerd established colloquial usage around that time.
