I would like paper ballots to automatically be sent to everyone who files taxes, to be returned either to a drop box or mailed back in with tracking to ensure your ballot had been received and counted. I can do that where I’m at and I think it would encourage more engagement if it was available everywhere.
Picklebobble2 · 56-60, M
At least if you complete a form yourself you can think you're contributing to the outcome.
Button pushing gives you no guarantee of anything.
Sadly the same is true for postal voting.

Yes.
The section is really about US politics but my country uses paper ballots too.
They are simple, direct and very secure.

That's how it still is here and it feels like the safest, although I wish the ballots were smaller because the current way is a waste of paper.
PHlover19701 · 56-60, M
Absolutely not. That not only invites fraud...but also intrduces human error or "error" into the counting. Horrible idea. On the other side, much stronger security of sofware and stronger oversight of software developers is needed for electronic counting.
The human factor on both sides is the most dangerous and unpredictable component. Humans are easly swayed, bribed, bought, and biased. Less of this component is better, but the part that remains needs to be carefully watched.
Its sad that so many moral and ethical compases are so out of wack....but thats reality these days.

@PHlover19701 Properly done, a paper ballot is very secure indeed. Electronic voting could be, but it would need a very secure system indeed, and the Internet is too easily interfered with by outside organisations including hostile governments.
However I agree with your point about human weakness. Individuals can be influenced or bribed. Though by definition, a ballot means the influencer does not know how the victim actually voted.

@ArishMell Voting machines are never connected to the Internet (thats too high of a security risk)...they are each stand alone units. Officials must go to each machine to download via an encrypted file the number of votes that machine recorded for each candidate. The same as paper but much, much faster and with much less of the human factor.
ArishMell · 70-79, M
@PHlover19701 That's reassuring. Thank you for explaining it.
ViciDraco · 41-45, M
Being in the US state that has the whole "hanging chads" debacle in 2008, I believe paper ballots are just a way to introduce biased human decision making into determining whose vote counts and whose doesn't. I'm pro electronic.
ArishMell · 70-79, M
@ViciDraco Sorr, I don't see the connection between methods and outcome.
Either way you asking voters their choice.
What you imply though is ballot-rigging, but that is very difficult if the ballot is operated properly.
I doubt an electronic method is necessarily any more secure than an electronic cystem. Indeed, if a national election is Internet-based, its security is compromised immediately.
You also imply the election identifying how individuals vote apparently because this can be done from paper ballot-slips. It would be easy to arrange an electronic voting system to collect that information, and covertly.
A proper ballot does not link individial to choice. In fact it would not even be a ballot, by definition.

@ViciDraco The "hanging chads" was a con job reason to recount 20 times because the one who lost could not let it go. if a HOLE is pushed thru a form next to a name...whether it fully falls out or not.....take a wild guess who they wanted to vote for?

Yes, have always done it this way is Australia - NO ID required

No I.D. required because everyone in Australia knows Ned!

Yes. That way there's a permanent record of every vote in case a recount is needed.
Bonus: the vote is anonymous; separated from the voter. Mail-in ballots can arrive in signed certified envelopes; once the signed envelope passes inspection then the ballot is separated and becomes anonymous.

Yes. Electronic voting can be hacked. Paper ballots can be duplicated and lost...but they are still best.
Nate931 · 31-35, M
Yes. I do vote with a paper ballot. So do most people who live here. It just happens to be a ballot sent in the mail.

I am in favor of physically showing up and voting in person. I also believe a valid photo ID and proof of citizenship should be required. I know California doesn't believe in this, but I do. Any mail in votes, ie: military or overseas workers should be required to be in a week in advance. They should also be counted and submitted before election day too. No more allowing mail in ballots two and three weeks afterwards to ensure a particular candidate wins.
Zaphod42 · 51-55, M
Here we get automatic mail in ballots sent out, all of them being paper. Until some sort of very secure app is developed, that’s probably the best and most convenient way.

The paper ballots have a serial number on them. So when it is scanned it can only count once. Each vote can be tracked. Electronic voting can be easily hacked, proven by Elon Musk.

Im in favour of voting being obligatory, with no penalty for ‘spoiling’ the entry.
The so called silent majority needs to actually vote.

@meJess Australia has that law. I don't know if it worsened, improved or had negligible effect on elections.
Some enthusiasts for compulsory elections suggest a box labelled "None of the above", though anyone who fails to understand the simple, proper word "Abstain" instead is not likely to make much of a reasoned choice anyway!
I oppose complusory voting but I have no sympathy for the wishy-washy excuses some trot out for being too idle to vote.

It was actually the silent majority who never voted at all who put Trump back into the Oval Office, not the MAGA Republicans who actually voted for him. To NOT vote at all means that one did absolutely nothing to prevent Trump from becoming President, which means they're complicit in Trump becoming President.

Paper ballots guarantee nothing. Boxes full of paper ballots from the last US Presidential Election got lost and couldn't be found because they'd been left in the back of a truck. Ballots can get accidentally or intentionally destroyed in various ways if they're paper, so if we can file our annual income tax electronically on a secure website, then why can't we use the same website to vote in an Election?
So no, I'm not in favor of voting with paper ballots. Besides, it's a very inefficient use of time, money and resources to be standing in line like it was 1950, just for the privilege of voting in a Democracy, including the Democratic Republic of the USA.

@LordShadowfire Like I would oppose networking these things if you’re using voting machines.
But honestly why are paper ballots so much more secure? They can be forged same as anything else
