@eyeno two great movies! Seen both so many times. Hang em high was first Clint Eastwood movie I ever saw. I was in awe for 2 hours.
rinkydinkydoink · M
Yes for Eastwood's Unforgiven. First for me :D
Second would be Gary Cooper and Walter Brennan in The Westerner (1940)
Third has to be The Big Country with a host of acting legends.
Forgot to count Dead Man (1995). It's an "acid Western" featuring Johnny Depp and Robert Mitchum in his final movie. In fact, I'd recommend this over my other 3 choices...

Unforgiven is excellent, but it is a knowing critique on the genre reversing/undermining the roles usually fulfilled by the characters.
I love Once Upon a Time in the West but that, too, owes a lot to previous films and is great for showing off by identifying the references (😂) and an unequaled music track.
Best classic? Probably High Noon for me.

I don't really like Westerns I'm more into Horror so I would have to say Bone Tomahawk
4thdimensiondream · 70-79, M
@AngelUnforgiven check out Night of the Grizzly and Stalking moon. Neither horror but intense stories with great cast.

4thdimensiondream · 70-79, M
@BlueSkyKing yes I’m aware. It’s on my list to see. I don’t know the other. A French film?
BlueSkyKing · M
@4thdimensiondream Spaghetti western. Saw it about 15 years ago when it made its US debut. I have a cool t-shirt of a poster for the film.

@basilfawlty89 A very good one
TheRealBarbossa · 36-40, T
Not sure if it qualifies as a western, but Warriors Way
TheRealBarbossa · 36-40, T
@4thdimensiondream I only know it bc Geoffrey Rush who played (my hubby) Barbossa in Pirates Of The Caribbean is in it 🙈
But regardless of how much I adore the man, I recommend movies I genuinely think people will enjoy.

@TheRealBarbossa he’s a terrific actor.
TheRealBarbossa · 36-40, T
@4thdimensiondream absolutely. And that move is something else.
It's about a samurai who comes across a carneval in the middle of nowhere, and helps them regain control against the guy who demands money to leave them alone.
It's a good mix of western, samurai, action, drama, and romance. I think that's the best way to describe it to someone who hasn't seen it.
Never seen anything like it before or after.

Lonesome dove.
4thdimensiondream · 70-79, M
@Adrift as I mentioned to somebody else, I really was psyched to see this series but I was reading on Reddit and it sounded like I might have trouble getting into it. What do you think?
Nimbus · M
Once Upon a Time in the West.
4thdimensiondream · 70-79, M
@Nimbus I need to see this again. I know I saw it once after hearing so much raving about it. But it didn’t grab me. I love Fonda and others in the cast.

@4thdimensiondream Please do, it's simply magnificent.

ProfessorPlum77 · 70-79, MVIP
For one, True Grit.
4thdimensiondream · 70-79, M
@ProfessorPlum77 not the biggest John Wayne fan but he was great in this. The movie that taught me that singers could also act (Glen Campbell). Yes I learned soon after most of them could or vice versa.

Does Blazing Saddles count?

@Quimliqer 1960 movie yes?
RebelRaven · 51-55, F
Are there any bad Westerns?
4thdimensiondream · 70-79, M
@RebelRaven the older westerns didn’t do it for me but overall it’s a great genre. Some are definitely better than others though I think. High Noon I think is dreadfully slow.
RebelRaven · 51-55, F
@4thdimensiondream fair and ya it is a good genre
