I remember the first time I ever had a pepper steak sandwich.

It was in fall of 1970, in a little hole-in-the-wall place in Boston called The Hawk Shop.

I went there several times, and I have never had a better pepper steak sandwich anywhere.

The Hawk Shop has been gone for many years, but I am still carrying a torch for my lost love!

There used to be a place in Moline, Illinois called The Italian Village (I think). They served a reuben that was to die for. It was on wheat bread rather than rye, and it was the size of a dinner plate — you were basically getting four sandwiches.

Then there was the Vegetarian sub at Sub Shop here in Columbia — a classic, my go-to for the better part of 40 years, and then they went and closed the place down. I may never recover.

My very first job was at Little King! 👑 To this day I can still remember some of the sandwich numbers🤭...

#11- Royal Treat

For me, the #11 will always be my favorite.🥪
