Do you get self conscious if someone...

Happens to *check you out*?

This happened a few days ago and today. A guy looked at me and kept looking back at me , and while I feel a rush of excitement, I feel so self conscious too. I looked away, both times, When what I really wanted to do was smile. I guess it's my self esteem, which is low. I'll think, 'You're not looking at much buddy' I really wish I could ever feel ok about myself. Do you ever experience that?

We are our own worst enemy when it comes to that. We find every single tiny flaw in ourselves & obsess over it.
Others who look at us see us in a whole different way.

Okay... I actually really don't like getting "checked out", but admittedly this probably comes from where I grew up. The Cape is a very touristy beach area as you know. And I remember being as young as 11 or 12 and getting checked out by creeps.

Someone who knows a lot more about psychology than I do could probably explain the connection. But, no, I don't like it at all.

I’m kinda used to it. Not that I’m some striking beauty, because I’m definitely not. I just go out in revealing clothing a lot. I don’t mind just so long as they’re not rude or creepy about it. Glances are perfectly fine, but staring would make anyone uncomfortable.

When I first lost weight and noticed women smiling at me for the first time, it really weirded me out. I never had the self-confidence to play that game of flirting with your eyes, so I was at a loss of what to do.

I'm normally very aloof in public so I can easily pretend not to notice or care, but it does weigh on me throughout the day or week. I've never really felt attractive before, or really cared about physical attractiveness in others, so it was just odd and confusing being roped into that mindset. I figured that it would go away if I ignored it. I've spent most of my life not getting attention and I'm really more comfortable that way.

@TinyViolins I have not tried dating apps, very intimidating. I am going to try to do a group meetup hopefully this spring or summer to get out of my comfort zone and I'd be happy Even making a Friend.

@Coralmist Some people can jump straight in and others need to take things one step at a time. I certainly fell into the latter category. I think you would benefit from communicating at a distance until you're comfortable enough for talking on the phone, then eventually trying out in-person conversations.

Trust is a fragile thing, so getting to the point where you trust yourself to handle attention should probably be done delicately. There are definitely people out there who are willing to be patient with you if you give it a chance. It's hard for sensitive people to jump right into things with somebody, so it might work out better if you look for people that are more on your wavelength.

I wish you the best of luck. It's tough to get the ball rolling, but it gets easier with time 😊

@TinyViolins Thank you

No but I understand low self esteem. It can be frustrating not being able to show yer true feelings towards someone.

I'll share this with you. I was with my crazy ex at a family function. She and two of her sisters were sitting on a couch and I was sitting down elsewhere. Crazy ex summoned me to the couch, but didn't ask me to sit down(there was no room). "Look over there," she said, pointing to the window to the left. Then, she said, "Look over there," she said again, this time pointing toward the opposite direction. What was I looking for?

Oh.

I had just gotten checked out by three sisters, who enjoyed muffled conversation between themselves. They had silly looks on their faces, but still it was a little off-putting. It was like being rated at the Olympics by East Germany or something.

That was the most blatant time I can recently recall. But I'm a guy, I can't perceive if a woman is checking me out, but I know for a fact it still happens.

Guys, of course, are terrible at being subtle and he was really looking at you.

@uncalled4

Sounds like the auctioneers studying body parts from the chattel of slave ships
uncalled4 · 56-60, M
@Thrust It was one notch above that.
Sidewinder · 36-40, M
I'm already self-conscious as it is without having someone "check me out."

Just having people say things about you that you don't wish to be said, either openly or confidentially is enough to cause self-consciousness.
CrazyMusicLover · 31-35
Only if it's very obvious. And then I find it rude and suspicious actually. You're supposed to do it discretely. 😅 I miss when men used to do it when I was younger.
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
Doesn't happen that often to me, but would make me uncomfortable. Best retort is the silent stare 🤨
The last time I caught someone checking me out it became a real staring contest, a matter of who was going to back down first, and I was determined that it wasn’t going to be me!
It was only after a minute or ten that I realized I was looking across into a mirror 😳
JamesBugman · 56-60, T
Maybe he thought you looked like someone, like familiar, or maybe you were in a dream he had recently. First thing to do is look over your shoulder so see if he is staring at someone behind you. ;)
No, but I make sure they are checking me out and not the person behind me ...it's happened. lol

Thank you for BC!! 🤗
Coralmist · 41-45, F
@Tumbleweed 👍🙂 No problem
JoyfulSilence · 46-50, M
In my case I tend to think people view me with disgust.

I remember once a woman caught me looking at her body and her reaction was like she had eaten a rotten pickle, or something.

Of course, I was likely twice her age. 🤪

Do it! (Smile)
@Adeptlinguist You can bet it would make their day.
Coralmist · 41-45, F
@Adeptlinguist I feel if I smile, it'll make me appear more than I am. 😟 But occasionally I do get the gumption once in a great while to do it and it does feel good
eyeno · M
Yup...at times.
exexec · 70-79, C
If they were close enough, my wife used to ask them if they like what they see.
chasingThursday · 41-45, M
I don’t think I’ve ever noticed a woman checking me out
Coralmist · 41-45, F
@chasingThursday perhaps you didn't see
chasingThursday · 41-45, M
@Coralmist I’m usually pretty observant

You should have smiled at the very least. Maybe a quick once over with your eyes too. Return the favor
Coralmist · 41-45, F
@JohnnyNoirWhile he was looking at me a couple times, He wasn't smiling at me..but I did feel flattered. I have occasionally smiled if a man seems interested, but most times I get so uptight. Because they think they see a regular person, and they don't know I'm far from that😟
JohnnyNoir · 56-60, M
@Coralmist Once again, he may be feeling the same. Regular is like normal to me, there's no such thing. We are what we are
calicuz · 56-60, M
Nah, at my age I figure their not interested, and it's all in my imagination anyway.
Coralmist · 41-45, F
@calicuz Your age is fine cali😎!
pancakeslam · 41-45, M
nah I'm so used to it 😎
But I do recommend that they see an ophtalmologist, @Coralmist... 😉🤣
Coralmist · 41-45, F
@SomeMichGuy No way🪻
