Why do people iron??

I have no idea why anyone would iron clothes regularly. I iron the occasional item but in general, no way! Such a waste of time. Hang it on a hanger to dry and it won’t be creased.

My mother almost had a heart attack today when I told her I haven’t got my iron out in about 6 months.

As I told her, she has time to waste! I do not 🤓

Exactly. Clothes today can hang and dry without a wrinkle. I hate ironing and I haven't ironed in ages and I'm not ashamed of it. I refuse to. Haha My clothes always look nice. Whereas my sister arms constantly practically. Every week a big load. I don't really want to live that properly. I'm clean and that's all that matters and my clothes look nice, not wrinkled. They can have that ironing bit! Exactly. It's no crime if you don't. 🙄

My bf irons his work shirts. I don't wear clothing that requires ironing. But in high school I was the live-in housekeeper so I ironed every day. Glad to be done with it.

Usually just flip in the dryer and take out right away, no wrinkles
@SW-Userdryers are magical 🤗

I'm pretty sure ironing doesn't waste as time as this place does. And SW doesn't make me look or feel better.

If you have ever owned anything made from pure cotton or linen, you would know why people iron. Most of that stuff wrinkles up really badly when you wash it, or wear it.

@SW-User I have a cheapskate streak running through me...I love clothes but I hate to pay a lot for them...so I order things from Tajikistan, and from China, and India, and often they are JUST like the linens and cottons of 50 years ago. Wrinkly as hell...🤣

@4meAndyou I just go to Marshall's and shop the sales... 😅
4meAndyou · F
@SW-User I do that at TJ Maxx. Marshall's is cool, too.

Most of my shirts are "wrinkle-free" and never need ironing, but a few of my dress shirts come out of the dryer in bad need of ironing. I probably iron one shirt per month.

Because I like my clothes to look crisp and wrinkle free regularly . Jeans , pants, cotton blouses get ironed. More delicate clothing gets steamed and are pressed at the dry cleaners .
I like wrinkle free clothes. Same with my son’s and husband’s. It has this polished look that i like

I don't even own an iron or ironing board and haven't for years. Many years ago, the older fabrics did wrinkle badly (especially cotton shirts and dresses ) in the laundry, but I haven't seen that happen in 30 years. Now my Mum ironed right up until the last month of her life. I bought her some fabric spray that takes out wrinkles, but having dementia, she forgot to use it.

I can understand like business like clothes. But normal day to day no way I am going to iron them
wildbill83 · 41-45, M
maybe they haven't discovered fabric softener yet... 🤔
CrazyMusicLover · 31-35
Not sure about clothes but it's good for kitchen towels for further disinfection and better storing. I think most of my clothes that tend to crease can't be ironed anyway, so I have no other option than to dry them on a hanger.

I iron my shirts and trousers. Clothes like jeans don't need ironing.

@SW-User She’s a bored woman! 😂

@resealableheart My Mum ironed sheets too. I'm not sure she didn't iron the dish towels as well.
It is something old- fashioned. My mom itoned for hours ever few evenings when I was a child. All of the clothing. Modtly dress shirts for my dad. Our clothing. 7 of us. And some of her dressier clothes. I used to iron in my twenties. Then my ex-spouse would iron his clothes. He liked to dress up. Fancy. He was gay not bi. He would iron one of my pleated skirts. He bought a new steamer before I divorced him a bit over a decade ago. Course he had OCD when it came to certain habits.
assemblingaknob · 31-35, F
Ikr. I just wear em all wrinkly. What's the point. The moment I sit around the creases appear. I just do not care anymore.
deadgerbil · 26-30, M
@assemblingaknob I stopped ironing my scrotum too
assemblingaknob · 31-35, F
@deadgerbil don't worry I swallow em wrinkly too
WhateverWorks · 36-40
I intentionally buy clothes that don’t require ironing lol. I only have a few retro dresses that need pleats Ironed in, which are a special Acacian thing.
resealableheart · 41-45, F
@WhateverWorks A special case is allowed 😁
DeluxedEdition · 26-30, F

Because they buy wrinkle fabriced clothes. I deliberately avoid them so that I don't have to iron. Except for that one new skirt this summer. My MIL ironed it for me and it has hung in the closet since. 😂

I have to iron my work clothes. I spray water and alcohol to release wrinkles when im in a rush.
meggie · F
I haven't ironed for many years. My boyfriend still irons most things including tea towels and sheets.
It's about fabric types more than anything else.
Natural fabrics like cotton, silk , all cotton denim, taffeta etc get all crumply when you wash them .

But with modern fabrics and clothes dryers, you barely get any wrinkling any more .

I threw out my ironing board years ago , but I keep my iron for my natural fabrics ....and only when I go to wear them .

And an ironing does leave a nice smooth sheen on some fabrics which has a beautiful feel - like linen ...it can't be beat for feel factor 🤗
Thank goodness, ironing isn’t as necessary as it once was. Now clothing is made from more "wash & wear" materials.
But some people were raised "old school" where clothing had to be starched and pressed. That was necessary with my school uniforms decades ago.
metaldog · 51-55, F
pfft I've used an iron 5 times in the last decade 😄
deadgerbil · 26-30, M
No idea. It's so goofy. People worry about the most nonsense things
Ryannnnnn · 31-35, M
Yup I just hang it 🤷
MoonaNorth86 · 36-40, F
I used to iron to make money but I gave up on it was to difficult
HotPizza71 · 51-55, M
Maybe a school shirt, lightly touched with an iron, otherwise, ironing can go sling one, like you say, time can be spent doing something else..And yes..as a man,I do the majority of the ironing, when required,it's better than sodding cleaning, that's my eldests chores each week 🤪😃
SW-User
I do the exact same thing!
I had to keep my security uniform shirts and trousers ironed.
