working is a form of slavery

DearAmbellina2113 · 41-45, F
Humans are naturally predisposed to work of some kind, whether it's mental, physically laborious, or artistic. People who don't do any kind of work whatsoever are usually very quickly miserable and bored.
NangiUniverse · 31-35, M
....chronically depressed, @DearAmbellina2113 ?

@DearAmbellina2113 we were created to work, put her to... It in the DNA of who we are
Oneofthestormboys · 100+, M
Not sure where you’re from, but I’m from the U.K. and see it this way:
Our extensive and over generous social care system certainly encourages people to do sod all and take from the State, however it’s really not good for your long term welfare or self-worth. A job isn’t ONLY about money, it’s sometimes about answering a calling in life (like being a nurse or in the medical/care profession), excitement and the feeling that you’re actually making a contribution to the human race.
Add to that your financial independence and long term security of being a working professional and it’s really a no brainier.
You’ll also be setting an example to your future children that life is like a garden - the more you work on it, the more rewards it’ll bring, and it’ll be beautiful and worth spending time in. If not, then it’ll be full of weeds, manky discarded mattresses and half buried rusty bikes.
It’s really your choice of course…

Working gives you a sence of pride, gives you something to get up for in the mornings. keeps you on the stright and narrow and you become your own person not reliant on others
MountainMonk89 · 51-55, M
So many benefits! Work is like exercise for our psyche. Without the "resistance" of completing tasks, becoming dependable, accomplishing difficult goals, we atrophy in multiple deep ways and it manifests in life choices by which we self-destruct faster than we even thought possible.

Self respect like paladin said
Working inspires motivation and responsibilities as well as independence. It is important to be able to live and to thrive. Independence fosters this. A free ride? No such thing unless you come from wealth. I have found the only wealthy people I know treat others like servants and the only thing that matters to them is money. People who do not work because they do not have to (not talking about the disabled) are generally lazy, stupid, unmotivated, and helpless. They look to others to take care of them. They sleep in. Or stay up all night and sleep all day. They lead confused lives. They have no purpose and do not seem to care to change their circumstances. Working gives purpose. Without purpose, people feel lost and alone and often develop mental illnesses like depression, self-harm, addictions both drug and sex and alcohol. I wish all people had to work. Even those on social assistance. They find it easier in general to get the money and to spend it quickly and without reason. Some need to be on assistance due to disability or chronic problems. It should, in reality, be a temporary solution.

@PoetryNEmotion well stated
Theyitis · 36-40, M
It gives you something to do, a chance to meet people and bond, and you might even accomplish something you’re proud of.
plungesponge · 41-45, M
subjective, but many people get a sense of societal purpose from work
Yeah. Things like:
. having a schedule,
. an eascape from home life and worries,
. More to talk about
. Diversity of people you interact with
. Responsibilities
. Challenges
. Feeling useful
. and making you value your free time more.

However, its also balance.
If you work too much you spend your free time recovering .
Which is depressing.
And conversely, if its all free time, you can become lax and unmotivated,
which is depressing.

I suppose its about finding a way to give your life meaning, whether it's through working, or some other avenue like volunteering .

A sense of giving back to society in some way can be very fulfilling.

🤔..........My wife has some friends that are trust fund babies that she grew up with that never had to work, but they still did, even some had just normal every day jobs.........And I always thought why are you even working?
ViciDraco · 36-40, M
Working for the sake of working is not something I think society should advocate, but so many people think it is the way things should be. That it isn't fair to the people who do work for others to have a free ride without working. Honestly, I believe we should be working to minimize the need for human labor in the future.

That being said, the key benefit to working when you don't have to is to better understand people who do have to work. Having a job be optional is never going to help you understand the dread and stress of people who need their job to survive, but you'll be a heck of a lot closer than people who have never worked a day in their lives.

Understanding the effort that goes into keeping services working and making products really helps bring an appreciation to what is available to you.

Definitely working gives purpose, even to appreciate free time

Wait, there's a free ride?

iamelijah · 26-30, M
It would be bored if you just stagnant live and no purpose. Work harder may not be the good idea but to distract your mind from poverty, stressful at home, work is my best solution to stay away from those stress.

We aren't upperclass lives by our family fortune. Life is never fair since day one.

Respect for the value
Darin99branch · 51-55, M
Agree with the values of working as so eloquently laid out by those previous. Also I might add, there is no free lunch in life. Basic needs must be attended to and if they’re coming from someone, there’s always strings.
RuyLopez · 56-60, M
Self respect.
Work for yourself, learning and getting experience in life is important. Since it gives you security of income. Free ride of life sounds fun but people don't understand or appreciate it.
GuyWithOpinions · 31-35, M
I think if you dont need to work for money than dont. Its a struggle. Some like i though. I would say spend tour time doing what you want. Gain a bunch of skills and explore the world.
smiler2012 · 56-60
{@emilyx] no value in my book of being a freeloader . i am old fashioned maybe in my thinking that if you work you feel you can stand on your own two feet and you have worked hard for your money
If you ever watched 2 and a half men what would your real life opinion of Alan be?

I mean girls free ride is usually a little bit different though

I'm with @DearAmbellina2113 about the predisposition of humans to do something, whether you call it work or not.

if you have to take from the government due to disability then that's necessary. but outside of extreme disability people should try to help themselves get to the point that can provide for themselves. not for anyone else's benefit other than their own. if you can't do so you have been failed by society somehow.
DDonde · 31-35, M
I guess you'd have to ask the people that get by without having to work
MartinTheFirst · 26-30, M
Yeah, if everyone had "free rides" youd live in a gutter
