@Mandy57 I hear about that every single day from my people. Just so hard against the huge money guzzlers.
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@Mandy57 i am sorry if you have had problems with insurance and medical care, but why do you believe they deserve the term scam? I don't want to be too personal, but did someone deceptively take money from you for insurance or medical care?

A scam is a deceptive scheme to trick someone into giving away money or personal information, often by pretending to be a trusted source (like a bank, government agency, or friend) and creating urgency or promising big rewards. Common types include phishing emails, fake job offers, unexpected money prizes, and impersonation scams, utilizing tactics like pressure, threats, and requests for unusual payment methods (gift cards, crypto) to get you to act quickly before you can think.

Search engines (not naming any names but the'res one that gets special mention in the book by Cory Doctorow called 'En💩tification') for the amount of advertising they ram down peoples' throats every time they do a search.

banking fees, phone service extra fees, fast food , in the USA most of our taxes don't go to social enbetterment, some majors (like art or writing) as college degrees, fanduel and the other similar apps, slot machines in casinos (but not so much the card games dice or roulette), much of law enforcement in the USA (which our taxes pay for) in the USA many 501 C's and pretty much all of religion,
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@robertsnj Universities are spending a lot of money recruiting students. Things were so much different when I retired than 25 years before when I first started working there. They started adding on mandatory classes for freshman to take. And added so many types of fees. Started taking a percentage for their cut of student scholarships and grants. And set up foundations for people to donate to the university for various projects including landscaping, benches, statues etc. They wanted more of those things to pretty up the campus so visiting potential students and their parents would be so impressed. They had to hire a lot more landscapers in order to keep everything planted, watered, weeded and maintained.
robertsnj · 56-60, M
@cherokeepatti i got a degree so so long ago--i am just out of the loop---but i see how expensive it is these days to go to college.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@robertsnj It’s ridiculously expensive. Some of my generation could live with their parents during college to save on housing & cafeteria expensive that are so much $$$. That way they didn’t have to get over their heads with student loans. they even tried to make freshmen that live within commuting distances to stay in dorms & buy a meal plan. Two mothers protested out on the campus while the president of the university went on vacation. It got the attention of a local TV station who broadcast the story. That bit of public scrutiny and some phone calls that followed caused the president to reverse that rule.

Car parts pricing according to model, and deliberately making simple roadworthiness repairs impossible, by the major car manufacturers.

Though unfortunately not classed as Fraud because although sharp practices, they are not illegal!
robertsnj · 56-60, M
@ArishMell that is a good example
ArishMell · 70-79, M
@robertsnj Thankyou!

I'd add motor insurers too, most of them encouraging that racket.

The idea that technology; political support for a party/candidate; 'donating' to the church that shouts loudest; switching your oil;gas;electricity; phone provider will magically save you money.
ArishMell · 70-79, M
@Picklebobble2 I've never worked out how donating to any cause would save you money!

I don't donate to churches anyway, apart from paying for the occasional music event in one, or attending a coffee-morning !
