I don't think there is a great answer if we (the American people) want to keep access to guns.

The NFL stopped fans from running onto the field by stop showing them... the lack of visual and the lack of news about them, significantly reduced the number of times it happens.
Everything time it happens, and it's all over the news, that's just free advertisement of it giving the idea to a whole new group of people...
I wonder what would happen if we stopped accidentally advertising it, and stop the idea from getting into upset people's head, if it would then significantly decrease.
Of course, that's never going to happen, as freedom of the media, and the fact that negative news and sex both do the best selling. So news wants to over cover stories like that.

And perhaps you're not Maga, but your way of arguing, not debating, is very Maga. And now you're deflecting, which is a standard Maga tactic. That's easy we have to get what we've lost as a culture back but therein lies the problem a lot of the good values that were taught when I was a child and those before me when many kids in school would be let out early to go deer hunting are gone. Parents now want to be their children's best friend nobody is taught discipline anymore at home let alone right and wrong or responsibility and ethics and therefore when they go off it's treated like a minor incident. Parents want to deny when their child has real problems and ignore the problem thinking it will go away. Schools are not allowed to discipline children anymore and spankings are now considered child abuse and then you wonder why it is only law enforcement that is left to deal with the situation. Guns are not the problem guns have been around for 400 years the problem is society today. And if you really want to know the bottom line I will give it to you simple an armed Society is a polite Society when everyone is equal on footing nobody steps out of line. Wild West Case in point
Firstly by stopping bitter party-political bickering over the problem and addressing it in a non-partisan way.
Then by rooting out the cultural drives by which violence, especially shooting and the worship of guns, is so taken for granted.
That's not and should not be a political-party matter, but a social one.
There must be something in US society so different from any other developed country. "School shootings" and similar atrocities with no clear purpose, distinct from terrorist, civil-war or drug-gang violence, do occur in other countries but are very rare.
As a trained and Certified Search and Rescue Expert and volunteer, I have been in mock 'Active School Shooter' exercises.
The short answer is ...anything from a Walther P22 to a Desert Eagle .50 Caliber brought out from safe hiding and put in the face of a school shooter will slow him down significantly.
The safest place on the planet for a school shooter to shoot people and children is where guns are not allowed.
Of course, common sense doesn't make sense to those that don't have any ...just saying.
@Carla Those who are afraid and unarmed are killed by predators. Those who are armed and are not afraid to defend themselves are not. It has been this way all throughout history. I understand that common sense does not apply with some mindsets. What is true, however, cannot be changed into a lie no matter how hard one tries.

@Heartlander We are going through the same process in reverse in the UK in that the government has ended the VAT exemption that has for years inexplicably been applied to private education on the assumption that private schools are somehow charitable institutions. When this was first announced back in October there were widespread predictions that the state sector would be overwhelmed with additional demand . . this has not happened . . which is somewhat of a pity because one of the objectives was to break down social barriers between children.
I like diversity and innovation in education. However, at the end of the day all that is needed for a child to thrive at school is to know that she is safe and valued (and a well stocked library).
@SunshineGirl It's always been a contested issue here. Contributions to both churches and (not for profit) private schools are tax deductible, but private schools can't use the donation to offset an individual tuition. Churches parishes, on the other hand, often have no tuition and provide the education free of charges ... but with the unspoken and general understanding that contributions to the church have to be sufficient to operate the schools. There is an occasional "that's not fair" voice raised, but the volume of church parishes that operate schools makes it an issue that the government would be cautious about confronting. Practically every Catholic parish in the US operates a school to cover grades through 7th or 8th. As do many Episcopal, Jewish and other religions congregations.
You don't have to reinvent hot water... Just look at other countries, the measures they take and the results that they get.
Another thing that needs to happen, is a cultural shift. Certain myths need to be questioned. Like the idea that having a gun keeps tyrants at bay, is ludicrous considering historical events. Also, using this argument and actively voting for an authoritarian demagogue who is installing a dictatorship... makes no sense.
Some things aren’t like gravity or the law of thermo-dynamics; they don’t have to happen. They happen only if people are stupid enough to allow them to happen. Here, on this island, we haven’t allowed them to happen, so the “cosmic joke” hasn’t been played on us. We’ve had good sanitation for the best part of the century-and still we’re not overcrowded, we’re not miserable, we’re not under dictatorship.
And the reason is simple: “We chose to behave in a sensible and realistic way.”
@RICHARD1313 My reading is that it was to ensure the USA had a military force to defend the country. As for taking up arms against the Government the 14th amendment says no.
Maybe a good place to start is to look at the differences between today’s students and students when there weren’t school shootings. Look at the differences between family sizes, between whether both parents worked or not, between two parents and single parent households.
How many shooters had no one at home waiting for them when they returned home after school? How many shooters had no brothers or sisters to share and interact with and learn how to get along with?
This isn’t about assessing blame but more to suggest that maybe schools should find ways to fill the gap for what may have been missing from kids home life.
You can still allow guns in the US. You just need to make the licensing harder. It’s access to semiautomatic weapons that cause the greatest issue. So, if it’s harder to get that license, access is removed from the young “student” shooter.
@22Michelle And, to be honest, I agree with those who say guns aren't the real problem, its people. So obviously Americans should not be allowed to have guns in the first place.
Schools are supposed to be the fortresses of learning, not the O.K. Corral.
In the UK we learnt that a mentally unstable man playing cowboy in a school isn't particularly desirable.

Fire everyone on the Supreme Court. Hire new people that are not affiliated with any party. Anyone that is affiliated to a party is automatically disqualified. Once there is a decent number of them, look at everything that has been passed by the Supreme court the past 30 years and re-evaluate. Make changes to better America, fix the constitution, get rid of dangerous weapons. Right all the wrongs that have been done to date.
1st you stop sensationalizing it they do it to be infamous, to be seen and you treat them like rockstars. So treat them like they are nothing and make it all about the victims. Refer to them as the shooter only dont even use their names.
2ndly, Dont give them Burger King and treat them with humanity.
The issue will never be resolved because there will always be evil in this world. There are parents who give their children guns as birthday gifts.. It just is!

@AngelUnforgiven actually that's completely wrong I find that insulting and honestly I went through the NRA course as a 9-year-old they had a two-day safety course that you had to pass in order to get a hunting license and there is a time and place for automatic rifles I've owned several of them and none of them have committed a crime

Having grown up when neighborhoods were stable and when we had neighborhood schools, the teachers knew who I was and who my parents were before I even set foot at school.
@AngelUnforgiven The schools my children went to don't even have a fence around them or a reception desk. If you have business there you just walk in and follow the signs to the class or office you need. There would be no one to operate the metal detector.
How can you live well if you feel that you are under siege the whole time?
I dare say that schools in more urban locations might be a bit more formal but here in Norway we live in what is commonly regarded as a high trust society so even then it's hardly likely to include a metal detector.
Today is Frigjøringsdag (Liberation day in Norway, called VE Day elsewhere). It's a flag day but it's not a holiday so the two schools that are at end of the street are open today. But there are no official classes, instead they have organised a kind of orienteering session so the whole village is full of primary school children (aged six to twelve) walking the route (several km), some alone, most in pairs or small groups. They aren't accompanied by adults, there are just staff members at a few check points.
Most of the children walk to and from school anyway so it's not as if fortifying the school would protect them from some lunatic.
@Jungleman Can't find the stats for specifically school shootings, but mass shootings (more tha 4 victims) so far this year, 118 dead and 338 wounded in 91 events.
@fun4us2b My cousin Émile was a teacher in a rough school in Los Angeles. They added metal detectors and brought in security guards back in the 90s and it helped a lot with the gangs. Nobody had a problem with those measures, and they weren’t talking about "arming the teachers".
Emile said after that school shooting in Uvalde that it was weird that some of the safest schools now seem to be those in "the hood", you don’t hear much about it happening there anymore.
@sunsporter1649 First where do you get the "65" figure from. Who's paying for all these guards, their wages, equipment, including guns, their training, the oversight of, etc, and lastly why do you think it will be "her" that goes postal?
@justbob In a mass shooting event, do you really want teachers distracted by trying to shoot the shooter back or would you rather they focus on getting their children to safety???
