I used to have a firm belief in it, (even though in Canada, there is no death penalty) but after a while, there comes a time when certain circumstances in one's life takes what you believe in and shakes it to it's foundational core.
AngelUnforgiven · 51-55, F
@Sidewinder so very true. There was a story on Mr Ballens podcast about a guy in jail whose doppelganger was in there also ppl would come up to him and say things like oh you're not going to speak to me and they would get mad at him and he didn't even know them. I searched the story and they look alike turns out the other guy actually committed the crime but what if, he was put to death? Also theres ppl with twins who grew up apart who never knew the other existed. My worst fear would be to end someone's life who was innocent.
Generally no. I think there are some circumstances that can justify it though, especially in poor and unstable countries. Like if you're in a country that's very unstable, you might not have confidence that your justice system can hold dangerous people forever. I'm mostly thinking of this regarding fascist movements, Islamist insurgencies, and criminal syndicates. Outside of extreme cases like that though, I think the death penalty is not necessary and the risk of wrongful convictions is too high.

@Sidewinder Soviet style, tiled basement, condemned gets on knees and kneels forward, two 9x18 makarov slugs to the back of the head.
DogMan · 61-69, M
@Sidewinder I always thought it was 1 live round and the rest blanks. But you could be right.

@BlueVeins You don't think rape and murder rates would go down if we castrated rapists, and
hung murderers? I think you are wrong. Most of these guys are not afraid of incarceration.
Their friends and family are there. Some grow up expecting to go to prison. They know the left
will protect them from capital punishment, no matter how heinous the crime.

In the U.S. ? No.
We still have such a huge discrepancy between who dies and who doesn’t when it comes to the death penalty, and since it’s not meted out equitably, I don’t support it.
It’s not that I think no one deserves to be executed for certain crimes, but knowing that if they’re rich they won’t be regardless of their crime, I don’t think the death penalty should be legal here.

1. We know for a fact it does not serve as a deterrent, in fact the opposite is true -- criminals kill to try to get away with killing.
2. Our system allows too many guilty who can afford good attorneys to escape punishment and too many innocent people, for the same reason, to get convicted.
This leaves revenge and that's not a good reason to end someone's life.

@Northwest great point

I think a family member should throw the switch. If someone raped or killed my kid I could throw
the switch.
Monsters need to be terminated.

@DogMan By the same token, if the family opposes the death penalty, do you think their wishes should get the criminal a reprieve?
lissah · 36-40, F
I support the death penalty. And i wouldnt even blink an eye or lose any sleep over pulling the switch on those mfers that commit murder just cuz they want to kill someone. Or anyone that commits crimes against children. Let all their souls rot in hell forever.

for certain crimes yes
AngelUnforgiven · 51-55, F
@GoFish I agree with this also
RebelRaven · 51-55, F
I do believe in it and yes I could, ALL pedophiles and child killers would get the death penalty (that’s a whole different kind of evil)
Sex offenders would be casterated.

@bijouxbroussard I say just put them down then.
bijouxbroussard · F
@RebelRaven I’m not ready to go that far, because if by chance you’re wrong—and that happens— you can release a person from prison. You can’t bring them back to life. We already know we’ve executed innocent people.
RebelRaven · 51-55, F
@bijouxbroussard fair point
exexec · 70-79, C
No. I don't believe it should be done.
Magenta · F
I have mixed feeling about it. It's not my place to sentence anyone to death.
But some crimes are so heinous (child.. cruelty, molestation, pedophilia, murder) they could be put in a torture chamber.

No state-sponsored execution. It has no right. Only the family has right - if they so choose.
AngelaR80 · 46-50, F
Thou shall not kill.
I remember a bible study group some years ago looking at the commandments. And as written there's no exception clauses. So I don't agree with the death penalty since we're collectively breaking that commandment if where we live allows it.

When you hear the details of some of these crimes, and look into the faces of the victims loved ones, what would your answer be?
AngelUnforgiven · 51-55, F
@Adrift Honestly it depends on the circumstances if there's 100% proof without a doubt that the person was guilty then yes, i think that the punishment should fit the crime. I've seen way too many stories of mistaken identity or the actual criminal coming forth when its too late.
trollslayer · 51-55, M
I don’t think it has ever worked as a deterrent for crime, but it has been used to wield political power. So my answer is no, but I think all convicted if life sentences should be allowed to elect that option if they found that the better alternative.
ninalanyon · 70-79, TVIP
@trollslayer
I think all convicted if life sentences should be allowed to elect that option
The problem with that is that many who are wrongly convicted become suicidal so offering execution still kills an innocent person.
trollslayer · 51-55, M
@ninalanyon that’s the problem it would both create and solve. I was thinking of people like McVeigh and Epstein. McVeigh wanted to go. Epstein? Well, now he can’t talk.
ninalanyon · 70-79, TVIP
@trollslayer I thought Epstein was supposed to be under 24 hour surveillance, suicide watch. How did he commit suicide under those conditions? All very fishy.
bookerdana · M
I don't think so

Not sure,
there are serial killers who get a thrill out of killing yet take precautions not to be killed themselves. Should they be locked up for the rest of their LIVES?
People like serial rapists / serial pedophiles / giving a life sentence ( the thing is they get out
