Do you feel it is safe to start opening the country or do you think we need to wait a little longer?

4meAndyou · F Best Comment
I think the experts at the CDC created this plan, and they all signed it. Dr. Fauci, Dr. Birx, and one other whose name escapes me.

State by state, governors need to look at the numbers of new cases. If there is ANY period of 14 days with no new cases or almost no new cases, then the state qualifies for very limited expansion...for 14 days. After 14 days...the state governor then re-examines the number of new cases. If there are new cases, the gateway is closed again.

I think that sounds very safe, and reasonable...and as long as we restrict travel in the states that are starting through these gateways...(no travelers from highly infected states)...I think we will be fine.
4meAndyou · F
@SW-User I don't have a copy of the plans given to the governors, but am remembering it as I heard it during the Presidents presser. If we could get hold of these specifics, it is possible it says low numbers of new cases.
bowman81 · M
@4meAndyou It is 14 days of declining numbers, not zero numbers of new cases and hospitalizations.
4meAndyou · F
@bowman81🤗 Thank you!!!

Keepitsimple · 51-55, F
Not when they are finding dozens of people dead in nursing homes and keep revising the death toll. I think we don’t know everything yet. To many things are slipping out now. I’m not ready to get back to any kind of normal if it means I’m taking a chance on dying but we can’t do this much longer economically and I don’t want to live in a tent.

In the grip of a pandemic you Don't get to make those kinds of decisions.

Because there's a very real risk that what you think you've just survived can come back at you 10x worse if this particular version of it is able to evolve.

I know it's tiresome and expensive and annoying but America of all places knows what happens when pockets of disease are 'fed' by folk not keeping away and then taking it elsewhere.

Just look back at your early settlers history.

@milkymum1 so when the election was on and people voting everyone knew about this coronavirus
milkymum1 · 31-35, F
@Nyloncapes Oh het a life, you go on the persona dn the party your voting for and the History of that person and party. People knew full well when they voted for Boris they voted for a lier and someone who runs awayè from responsibility, so yes they should take some responsibulty for this mess.
Nyloncapes · 61-69, M
@milkymum1 tell me what party has not lied, and kept there promises in there manifesto when trying to get elected , just tell the people what they want to hear, none of the party's are any good at the moment

We need to wait.
Words from my niece in New York watching people die every single day.
This isn't about politics it's about saving lives!

"I wish u would listen when I tell all of you in order to stay safe u have to stay home, I wish u could see the horrible nightmare that is in store for you if you obtain or are subjected to Covid-19. I wish for all of your sakes you never have to endure what these people are fighting. This isn't even close to just saying it is a virus, I wish they would come up with a disease or word that actually is as frightening as this is. I know it's hard to change, to stay away, but u are either the solution....or the executioner."
Do you feel it is safe to start opening the country
Yes.
It's planned step by step - coordinated by governors closer to their own situation.

Seems to me Trump is handling this perfectly -
and ironically, hands off!
SW-User
@Budwick A spoken error...😂 It's not like he slurred over a couple words. He got pissy that state governments decided to stand up for themselves and protect their citizenry. You should be proud of heroes like Cuomo and Newsom that are ready to stand with their people and smack a dictator in the face with the constitution. I'm just glad someone was there to point out the 10th Amendment to Trump since he obviously hasn't read a word of it 😌

@Stereoguy
greed over life's
LIVES - the plural of life is LIVES.

Greed? Allowing the general population to enjoy some semblance or normality is greed?

You know, you're not FORCED to go to the beach and gape at the girls.
You can just stay with your sticky magazines if that's what you want to do.

Keep the elderly and immune deficient and sick locked down for another 30 days or until it is safe for them ..... let the country open to the rest

Smart to start opening

But intelligence is not the issue, if the people want a state open ... that state must be opened

We do not substitute scientists, wise people or rules for the will of the people ... under any circumstances
@monkeysdevil007

Of course you would not agree. .. that statement was made historically, in the discussion of drafting our declaration of independence from England ... after Bunker Hill and during the British Naval blockage to starve the colonies.

The UK is NOTHING like the United States ...

I can't imagine why anyone would want to reopen when we really haven't figured out the virus yet. New data from Korea seems to indicate people are 'catching' this a second time.

@Stereoguy Recently learned that more died in the second wave of Spanish Flu - following WWI celebrations - than during the initial spread?

It is a really odd one for usa. You have not had a full lockdown like in the uk. You could simplify it and say it is about whether we take care of our elderly or making money.... and I do wonder if this was an illness that affected our children the same ways as our senior citizens would we not work harder to protect life.

But, I do also see the problems that usa have in lack of the social support that means many people will hit poverty, the implications of this will be much harder to recover from than losing a few hundred thousand of the weaker elements of our community. (And before anyone attacks me for this I am just presenting the argument it is not my sentiment).

Personally I believe we don't know how this will pan out. We already know this virus has the ability to mutate and there are currently 3 strands. If we continue to let it spread who knows how many more strands we will.end up and how much more deadly it will become. A vaccine is not yet available and it will be some months before it will be.

I have no issue with being at home, what is a few months of my life to keep our elderly and vulnerable safe.
Pretzel · 61-69, M
i think it's a matter of geography

South Dakota didn't lock down and is doing fine - but they are spread out.

there are plenty of places that don't have a big population and that don't have a lot of coming and going - they should be opened.

Michigan is revolting (not disgusting - they are in revolt) and want to be turned loose - let them go and study the hell out of them

New York City could be opened for essential workers and make masks free for those that want to use them
@Pretzel I just want to know what your username was 😅

We nee to wait a LOT LONGER. The politicians and business leaders need to get out of this discussion and let the medical professions -who are trained at assessing risk say say when it is safe. The problem is untrained voices are speaking from the pocketbook and not caring about the cost of innocent lives involved. thus showing they believe human ;lives to be expendable at the sake of profit.

I think it's way too early. People are still dying and if we open up there will be much more. We need to wait at least another month.

@Stereoguy I'm sure they are, just haven't been out much lately. Our state is locked down until May 1.... unless there are more deaths...then the gov. might not open us up for another month.

it was kinda proven in California, if you think you're overreacting, then you're just about on track. I think it should probably stay in place for a week or two more, then move into a slow startup. some way to maintain distances with businesses opening up gradually. we really need a ton of very quick test kits.

No! Our governor doesn't want us running around wild then have the virus slap us in the face again with even more deaths because we couldnt handle being stuck home. Better than being dead. We're brave, we can handle it a month or more longer. We can do it!

If we keep the vulnerable isolated I think we could open up.
milkymum1 · 31-35, F
@Picklebobble2 Its like Hancock today said "before the crises we had more than enough supplies" so in that case why have so many not got PPE or where has it all gone? etc, etc.

EVeryday you see different Ministers saying they are sorry but its words you can tell they don't even mean it and stumble over it.
Picklebobble2 · 56-60, M
@milkymum1 and the longer it goes on the more folk die and the less convincing it sounds.
milkymum1 · 31-35, F
@Picklebobble2 Yes and the more health and careworks don't have thier PPE too, and that the press have convienently forgotton about the ventorlaters too.
SW-User
Well they obviously can't wait for there to be zero new cases because that simply isn't going to happen. If there is consistent decline I'm thinking states have to start trying.

@Stereoguy I think opening immediately is an awful idea...and a good way to probably make things as bad as when it started, if not worse. Honestly my thoughts are all over the place with this...glad I'm not the one that has to make the decision, lol.

@JoePourMan So what have been the numbers over the last week? also just ebcause its flattering doesn't mean its not finished as Wohan has found out.

Wait longer. Here in red states Republican governors aren't testing so death rates are certainly higher than the official statistics indicate. They're the same ones who want things opened soon if not immediately.

Isn't America still getting 2000 dead a day 🤔
Keepitsimple · 51-55, F
@ExtremeNext They look at the new infected number rate. They already wrote off the infected people.
ExtremeNext · 31-35
@Keepitsimple here in Australia we have 64 total and not even close to opening anything up just look at Singapore they said its all under control now they are getting 500plus a day
Keepitsimple · 51-55, F
@ExtremeNext I don’t know what the answer is to be honest. Everyday things change. The rules change. Now they say you don’t have to disinfect anything you buy or open but a week ago we were supposed to. I think economically we are collapsing so now they have us believing we are safe so we can get back to work and get the economy back on track to pay our debts back. I don’t know who to believe.

Without enough testing, it seems unlikely no matter how much slippery Baby-trump huffs and puffs about how in (and out and back in) control he claims to be. He should get off his fat ass and stop promoting his popularity and demonstrate some of that negotiation skill he claims to have mastered over the years of being a little Daddy's "girl" by expecting his father to bail him out each time he screwed up. Well, this time his Daddy (born in New Jersey, then Germany, than back in New Jersey) can't save him from the bone spurs now growing inside of his head. He should negotiate with companies to increase the volume of testing kits that he has falsely claimed would "soon" be available, but has yet to deliver on.

Vote this guy out of office so he can tend to his corruptions. It's what he is really interested in doing, after all.
MrRoboto · 51-55, M
There’s no one size fits all answer to this. There are some industries in some areas where they can achieve social distancing while getting some work done and others where it’s next to impossible. I also think there needs to be a focus on the food supply chain and keeping that moving as safely as possible, because if the food supply gets seriously disrupted, that will open a whole new layer of issues.. If there were widespread testing available, it might be a different discussion, but that ball was fumbled months ago and continues to be fumbled.

Needs to be opened. Carefully.

I believe in civil liberties. We can't live our lives wrapped up in a bubble from supposed or real threats. Death and illness is an every day part of life, sadly. We can't lock down people and society every time a new threat comes along. (There will be more). People have the basic right to work and support their families, etc..

A few places did not adopt the group think lock down and they don't appear to be any worse off.
