Have you cooked okra before?

I have always been interested in it but its hard to get round here and I don't know what kind of meals you'd use it in...

You roll the sliced okra in yellow corn meal and fry it. Absolutely delicious! You wouldn't think something so fuzzy and slimy would be as good as it is, but fried okra is manna from heaven.

My favorite way to cook it is to slice it, toss it in a bit of olive oil, bake it on a cookie sheet til crispy, then salt it before eating. Yummy

Boiled its a bit slimy. I grew up eating it fried ( dusted first with corn meal) , and I have had okra and squash together (dusted with corn meal) and fried . Both are really good. The cap and the tip are hard , so discard those pieces ...slice in 1/2" slices ,lightly dry them in a paper towel, batter with corn meal (shake off the excess) and put in hot oil or a deep fryer. When it starts to brown well its done.
Friend it a time or two

It is used in gumbo as a thickening in Louisiana. This is basically a stew with rice, any kind of seafood, hot spicy sausage, and chicken. It has a tomato base, and can also contain veggies like onions, celery, and peppers.

A simple recipe I did once was to cut the ends off, saute it in a pan for a few minutes, then add a bit of beef stock, boil for 10 minutes. Squeeze some lemon over it and it's good to go.

Yep.
Cooked with tomatoes and other vegetables in a curry or coated in flour and fried
I love eating fried okra, but the only way I've cooked with it is in gumbo.
I actually hate it. But i have fried it and boiled it for my family before.

I like fried okra or okra and tomatoes, but I don't cook those dishes
Crazywaterspring · 61-69, M
Yes. You can get it with cornmeal or put it in a stew.
Nomoretomorrow · 46-50, M
Yes in a curry.
Thevy29 · 41-45, M
@Nomoretomorrow How long can you cook it before it goes to mush? Is it like a zucchini, potato or carrot?
Nomoretomorrow · 46-50, M
@Thevy29 can't remember off the top of my head but not long, more like a zucchini.

@Thevy29 cooking it without much liquid with other veggies just until tender is better than cooking in a stew. And don’t slice it when you put it in a dish. I’ve had a middle-eastern dish like stew but without putting liquids in it, chicken or other meat with other veggies and onion-garlic & spices, it doesn’’t get slimy like that. And pickled okra is not slimy either, my daughter got me to try it and it’s good.
only thing I use it for is in my soups
