We’re experiencing -20 F windchills this morning...
4meAndyou · F
@CantExplain Don't go outside.
Coralmist · 41-45, F
Oh wow.. I'm in MA and we had a big storm on Sunday...a foot! Whereabouts are you?
Coralmist · 41-45, F
@quitwhendone That was the week before..where there's high winds. but it was similar!
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@Coralmist I’m in central Oklahoma, we haven’t had a cold streak like this where we stayed below freezing this long since the 1980’s and we may have a week-10 days or more of it if it snows a foot or more because it keeps the cold around longer.
@cherokeepatti I lived in your state for a minute. Can't really say that I had a fun time. But it's pretty. Stay safe.
4meAndyou · F
Remember what I found last year about keeping the birds warmer? Fill a hot water bottle with hot water and put it inside their cages while the cage is covered. I am worried about you...and them, and hope you will all be okay.
4meAndyou · F
@cherokeepatti Your little babies...you take such good care of them!!!
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@4meAndyou They are part of the family. The boy was talking about the feral cat and said he wanted to bring it inside but I told him not with the birds and it’d probably slice him to ribbons if he tried to pick it up. We were talking about trying to get it to eat more often, I think someone else is also leaving some food out. After we finished one parakeet started saying “What will we do?” Several times. They have asked that several times when we are talking about what we are going to do that day or whatever. They don’t want to be left out I guess.
4meAndyou · F
@cherokeepatti I wonder if there is some way to give him some heated shelter...I used to know a woman who fed feral cats and she kept a cat box...Igloo brand...like a transport box, right next to the house just in case they wanted to go inside.
Zaphod42 · 46-50, M
The weather is nasty this morning here in SoCal too...it’s sprinkling rain this morning and it’s only 58 degrees outside 🥶😂
Pinkstarburst · 51-55, F
I just got home from my regular grocery trip...there was not one single potato in the store. Bizarre what people will hoard these days.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@CantExplain We haven’t had this much winter weather all in one chunk for decades, they say back to 1983
CantExplain · 61-69, M
@cherokeepatti our record goes back to 1930. I can imagine folks down your way are taking it sorta hard. Don’t you know the OK panhandle is frigid 🥶!
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@CantExplain I am in Central Oklahoma, pretty far from the Panhandle, they always get a real winter there.
ninalanyon · 61-69, T
How long would people be unable to go shopping? I mean I don't make any special preparations for such events but I (actually four of us, all adults) could certainly last at least a week without without shopping without any hardship beyond a reduced choice of what to eat and probably at least two with a little bit of care.

What I'm trying to say is that it seems that stocking up specifically should surely be unnecessary.
smileylovesgaming · 31-35, F
@cherokeepatti my boys love to get the eggs from our chicken coop.
Repete · 61-69, M
My family always had a garden , my dad had to have his potatoes. We grew most of what we needed for the winter . We also had chickens , pigs, and at least one cow usually more and a couple of horses to ride.it was hard work at times but also fun raiding the pea patch or fresh carrots straight from the garden.
Sorry I’m getting hungry 😋 @cherokeepatti
ninalanyon · 61-69, T
@Raine Eggs last about a month at room temperature here in Norway.
Heartlander · 80-89, M
Blizzards across the plains can be like a trip to the north pole. I once tried to out race one to get to OK City and found myself stranded in Emporia for 3 days.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@Heartlander When I was 6 years old my parents wanted to go visit my grandparents in Nebraska, we lived in Missouri. The trip wasn’t that long, a few hours and it was about 10 days before Christmas. When we got there it was nice enough that my cousins were playing softball out next to a cornfield. By the time we got ready to leave a blizzard was forecast so we left, my father thought he could beat it but we ended up having to stay the night in a motel. I got athletes foot from the motel that took a couple months to get rid of.
Heartlander · 80-89, M
@cherokeepatti

Yep, the weather can change on a dime. I once saw a difference of 50+ degrees between St Louis and KC. From bathing suit to overcoat in just a few hours.

Going the other way, I wouldn't mind a 50 degree warmup within the next two hours :)
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@Heartlander the sun has been shining all day, the snow melted on the driveway and road. But this is Oklahoma, we have warm weather right before most of the ice storms. It got up to 19 F. This afternoon
greenmountaingal · 70-79, F
It's the start of the rainy season here in southern California. Since smoking isn't allowed inside my house (it's a roominghouse), I have to go outside if I want to smoke weed. Been hoping the rain will clear up for a while if only so I can go outside onto my lovely patio for a smoke. The rain usually starts at night. It's just started to stop now and I'm happy to see the sun coming out. Since we have a grapefruit tree and an orange tree in our backyard (the kind that bear fruit year round), we know we'll never run out of citrus or citrus juice here. Everyone's buying stuff from the supermarkets like crazy due to the pandemic; the hoarding instinct kicks in during emergencies. I keep my linen closet filled with basiçs like soap and toilet paper.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@greenmountaingal I got my extra cleaning and paper items out in the garage, thank goodness I have that, it’s cold like a refrigerator right now & I can store citrus and some other things like drinks and eggs out there when I stock up.
Eddiesolds · 61-69, M
I hope you get everything you need. How long will it last?
Eddiesolds · 61-69, M
@cherokeepatti I'm so sorry to hear this. I'm not fond of droughts.ive seen what happens. Its pretty sad.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@Eddiesolds Wildfires are the worst thing about droughts, farm ponds dry up, crops ruin, trees die, and bee hives have died off, I think there’s one left in the area now. But some have their own hives for their family’s honey supply.
Eddiesolds · 61-69, M
@cherokeepatti Yes . Gosh what a nightmare
SW-User
That must be annoying if it happens every major snowstorm. Here in California, a "storm" is an inch of rain, so...it's rare that shelves would get emptied for the weather. Just the pandemic making people buy everything here.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@SW-User It doesn’t have to be a major snowstorm just the threat of snow or ice sticking around on the roads. We already had a major ice storm in October.
TexChik · F
yep, it would be a good idea
TexChik · F
@cherokeepatti we stocked up at home before we left to come up here to the farm.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@TexChik I stocked up a week ago thinking this would last about a week and have already needed more cause I cook every meal. Got 10# of carrots & 15# of potatoes, more parsley, 2 gallons of milk, tomatoes plus more. It better last till this mess is over. Freezer is full of meat & some frozen veggies and fruit. We wouldn’t starve even if I ran out of those things but I like to stay on top of it to have a variety of things to cook.
TexChik · F
@cherokeepatti That is always smart. We are going to head home tonight instead of the morning since the forecast has gotten more specific. Hubby is sleeping and I have gotten the house and barn winterized...all the smart plugs work with the app on my phone so I can control the heaters . its 12 and windy...brrr
tiggerandariel13 · 41-45, MVIP
here in Nashville, the stores are crazy 6 to 8 inches of snow expected
Ramen noodles, rice, pastas, powdered fruit drinks, sugar, salt, pepper, dry peas, dry beans, powdered or building cubes of preferred flavors.
Buy what beef, pork, poultry you can and freeze it.
Coffee and tea.
Frozen vegetables (use for soup).
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@soar2newhighs I have most of those already, real fruit juice & some citrus out in the garage, grapes, pasta, meats, beans etc. and some cans and jars of stuff. I run out of bananas, onions, potatoes & carrots to cook with & fresh milk. Bought powdered milk & canned milk to cook with, I bake bread if we run out. Have been making a number of types of soups from scratch.
smileylovesgaming · 31-35, F
U got to love Feb. U think we skip winter one week. Then the next week winter comes back
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@smileylovesgaming thinking of an ice storm that happened sometime before that.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@smileylovesgaming I hope the damned earwigs freeze their butts off. Getting tired of them, they get into the house and never know what they’ll get into.
smileylovesgaming · 31-35, F
@cherokeepatti last one I remember was over 10 year's ago
The weather drives their ratings. They'll play it up as much as they can.
I’ll bet all the bourbon is already gone
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@stratosranger liquor stores get brisk business before a major storm hits, then police get calls for domestic violence. Domestic violence calls doubled in my city last year due to people being out of work or quarantined.
jackjjackson · 61-69, M
Liquor cabinet full here. All good.
Iwillwait · M
😣
Not again...
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@Iwillwait Might get a foot or more of snow plus it’s not supposed to get above freezing for over a week so the roads will be icy.
Iwillwait · M
@cherokeepatti 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Zonuss · 41-45, M
They should. They are trying to decrease the amount of sunlight during the Winter months. Long story. But stock up. Low pressure systems galore in the US
Stay warm Patti.🙂
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@Zonuss They were sold out of milk at the Braums store here last night and the cashier said the delivery truck would be there at 6 this morning. Someone I know went about 10 this morning and people were rushing in and getting milk and a lady said she’d been to 3 other stores this morning and they were all sold out already.
TheArbitrator · 36-40, M
I'm so sick of people going into frenzies and leaving the grocery shelves bare. I'm going to start growing my own food.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@TheArbitrator @4meAndyou I stocked up pretty good in December & ordered some gluten-free flour & other things from Swanson that I couldn’t find in the local store. Every week when I shopped I would buy extra just in case of bad weather or we were in another lockdown, have a couple bins full out in the garage, and bottled water & cleaning stuff. That ice storm in October made me think maybe I better stay stocked up because no telling. I might run out of milk but I have some powdered & canned milk to cook with and calcium pills so I don’t get cramped up because of low calcium levels.
4meAndyou · F
@cherokeepatti Sounds like you are all set! I just got back from shopping myself. My problem is keeping veggies and fruit in good supply. I keep frozen and canned of both, but I always run out.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@4meAndyou I bought quite a bit last week but we go through carrots, potatoes, tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, limes & lemons, etc pretty quick. I can use some of my frozen veggies to cook with though, mixed veggies are good in fried rice & have several others
Azlotto · M
Bread, eggs, and milk day. 😉

Stay safe.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@Azlotto I know how to can but don’t have a garden space here or I would turn the whole back yard into a big beautiful garden. I used to can up to 200 jars of stuff a year when I lived in the country besides what we ate and what I froze up. Had to give stuff away too because I’d get carried away and plant too many tomatoes, squash & cucumbers. Cucumbers grow really good on a chain link fence & if you plant pickling cucumber they produce heavily
@cherokeepatti Totally understood.. I have stocked up myself due to the crazy events of this crazy world we live in... But in years past, snow storms have caught me off guard...
@cherokeepatti very nice!!

@cherokeepatti The Gulf coastal areas lacks the resources to cope with much below 30 degrees F. If it hits the teens it's a complete shutdown.

@4meAndyou that was earlier in the week and it wasn’t the only accident. There were semi trucks crashing and I saw where a truck had went on top of a concrete barrier. People were driving too fast for one thing. The vehicle that started that pile-up was a truck pulling a cattle trailer. Some cows died from it, I guess it’s easy to shift their weight in a cattle trailer and it makes it more dangerous to pull them when there’s the least amount of ice. I haven’t driven anywhere in a week and I think if snows this weekend school will be cancelled another week.

@RogueLoner that’s sad. I would help anyone around if they need something and I have it to give them. Others are the same way. It’s Oklahoma, too many tornadoes & other disasters where communities have had to help one another out in a multitude of ways. Disasters are a powerful teacher.
