How long would people be unable to go shopping? I mean I don't make any special preparations for such events but I (actually four of us, all adults) could certainly last at least a week without without shopping without any hardship beyond a reduced choice of what to eat and probably at least two with a little bit of care.
What I'm trying to say is that it seems that stocking up specifically should surely be unnecessary.

@ninalanyon people stuck at home with their families for a week or more need food. Problem is so many people these days eat restaurant meals often and don’t stock much except snacks at home and the children have lunch and breakfast at school

@cherokeepatti Ah, I see. We don't do that much in most of Europe, certainly not here in Norway. We cook everyday, I make bread twice a week, cakes and pastries two or three times a month.

@ninalanyon I cook almost everything that we eat too. And I keep plenty of baking supplies & other food items on hand in case of emergencies or bad weather. I run out of fresh fruit, veggies & milk though.

I keep stocked up on most things . My things I have to watch out for is eggs , bread, and milk. Fresh fruit is great apples last awhile for me, and bread I can make. I usually go for biscuits @cherokeepatti

@Repete I buy extra eggs and store them in the garage where it stays cold, have milk and other foods out there right now. The leafy greens, parsley, etc is taking up too much space in my refrigerator right now.

I try to keep extra eggs but they disappear on me 😂 before I know it I’m low again. @cherokeepatti

@Repete I buy anywhere from 4-6 dozen at a time, lasts a little while.

@cherokeepatti don't eggs go off after about a week?

That would do it . I usually have a dozen I’m using from and a dozen extra . That’s enough usually because one person (most of the time) doesn’t use that many. @cherokeepatti

A side question. How do you check eggs if you think they may be going by? My grandmother told me to put them in a dish of water if they float they are bad. I usually don’t worry that much about it because they don’t last that long here.@cherokeepatti
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@Repete put them one by one in a bowl of cool water, if they float throw them out.

That’s what I thought, thanks.@cherokeepatti

@Repete eggs sold for grocery stores have been cleaned and have to be refrigerated right away due to the protective coating being washed away. Farm eggs can go awhile before having to be refrigerated and will last longer.
Repete · 70-79, M
That sounds funny but I agree. They clean the eggs because of regulations for safety but yet they wash away their own protective coating . Strange when you think about it.@cherokeepatti

@Repete we just wiped off any spots when we sold eggs, we took a crate of them to town and used the money to buy any groceries at the store that we didn’t raise ourselves...coffee, sugar, spices, pineapple, bananas, baking stuff, etc. We grew, raised or made as much as we could.

@cherokeepatti my boys love to get the eggs from our chicken coop.

My family always had a garden , my dad had to have his potatoes. We grew most of what we needed for the winter . We also had chickens , pigs, and at least one cow usually more and a couple of horses to ride.it was hard work at times but also fun raiding the pea patch or fresh carrots straight from the garden.
Sorry I’m getting hungry 😋 @cherokeepatti

@Raine Eggs last about a month at room temperature here in Norway.
