Bowtie? Or no?

I'm about to board the Acela train to NY Penn Station for meetings in NYC this afternoon and tomorrow. So I'm sitting here at the Providence Amtrak station and so far I've scoped four elderly gentlemen with bowties.

Two of them just look like retired guys who like to look dapper. One of them I recognize as a professor at my undergrad university here in Providence. I didn't have him, but I recognize him from around campus. Never seen him without a bowtie. The fourth guy actually doesn't look that old, maybe mid fifties. He's in a very nice suit, very expensive looking and definitely tailored. Maybe a banker?

So, do you wear bowties?
If yes, why?
If no, what do you think when you see a bowtie?

And girls... I'm asking you too! Do you wear them? What do you think of them? Or of men in them?

Let's talk fashion!

Standard neckties were part of our school uniform. I wore one just about every school day from the age of eight to eighteen.

Bow ties would have been a welcome alternative, certainly.

My dressing up tends towards formal gowns, though I can see the attraction and style of the photograph posted by @ArtieKat. I can well imagine turning up like that to one of Mummy and Daddy's Christmas parties.

Bow ties on guys - away from the DJ/tux - can be stylish, but must be supported by a good quality and well-ironed shirt and a bespoke suit. Otherwise, they can be redolent of the classic absent-minded professor.

@OliRos Does this count as a bowtie?

OliRos · 22-25, F
@SunshineGirl 😂😂😂 No! That counts as undressed!

But cute.
sarabee1995 · 26-30, F
@SunshineGirl Definitely not, but I like the look! 😉
My tie collection consists of several colors of BOWTIES and a few Bolo Ties.

The BOLO ties are the "official neckwear of Arizona" and in addition to giving the chance to show off some original native jewelry (in the clasp/slide of the tie), I like the fact that it they are instant "conversation" starters with the non-locals (or SNOWBIRDS as we like to call them).

I ditched regular ties many years ago when I was provided a high-end traditional BOWTIE to wear as best man at a wedding. The groom wore a red one and the wedding party all wore black ones. I found it to be very comfortable and liked the fact that it was not flapping off my chest at the reception. That was what got me started on BOWTIES.... Now I have a collection and none of them are the clip-on cheapos. I guess I just like the fact that they make a suit really "pop" and very few, if any, others will be wearing them at gatherings... so it gives a guy a chance to stand out from the crowd.

@Threepio Nice!
sarabee1995 · 26-30, F
@Threepio Love it! For you it's a mix of personal comfort and flair!

I agree on the comfort side. I've worn both straight ties and bow ties (neither with any regularity), and I much prefer the bowtie for the same reasons.
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
At my wife's hospital, traditional neckties are discouraged on hygiene grounds. So those doctors senior enough not to have to wear uniform, and who wish to cut a sartorial dash, often wear bowties.

On the childrens ward they theme each day of the week according to the colours of the rainbow 🌈 The consultant paediatrician has seven bowties in each colour. Every so often he will wear the "wrong" colour on the ward and the first child to spot the error is given a small treat . . used to be a bag of sweets, but now more likely to be fruit given the global obesity epidemic!
ArtieKat · M
@SunshineGirl That's sweet!
sarabee1995 · 26-30, F
@SunshineGirl Love it
Elessar · 31-35, M
It's absolutely subjective and most probably just my own perception, but it feels a bit outdated to me? Same as shoulder straps.

However just a few weeks ago I was at some fancy-àss super modern restaurant/bar, and the waiters (most of whom were younger than myself) had both, so I'm guessing they're still popular in some circles
OliRos · 22-25, F
@sarabee1995 I am adopting this as my diurnal dress forthwith!
Elessar · 31-35, M
@sarabee1995 Yeah but still, I'd feel like impersonating my grandpa
OliRos · 22-25, F
@Elessar Your grandpa sounds like a cool dude.
The men I know who favor bow ties are each unique and original thinkers who are fascinating to talk to. Maybe this is why I don’t wear a bow tie.
sarabee1995 · 26-30, F
@BiasForAction Lol ... I think qualifies you to wear one!! And yes, I agree that most bowtie wearers I know are like this.
ArtieKat · M
Just to prove my equality credentials, Sara!

Random pic off the net - but isn't she classy?
ArtieKat · M
@sarabee1995 I have a friend who, when she was about 19, had a man's suit tailored in navy pinstripe, which she wore with a white shirt, navy polka dot tie and matching pocket handkerchief..... plus strappy red platform shoes. She looked sensational.
OliRos · 22-25, F
@ArtieKat Dan is second generation immigrant. He has Highland clan roots.
ArtieKat · M
@OliRos How exotic lol
Adogslife · 61-69, M
I like floral bow ties if it’s a fine dining experience or wedding in the summer. In the winter, I’m much more apt to wear a regular tie. Both are only worn if necessary. I much prefer a button down shirt or polo.
sarabee1995 · 26-30, F
@Adogslife Yes, ties in general are becoming less common.
ArtieKat · M
I don't often wear bow-ties - I do enjoy dressing up in a dinner suit (tux) though. Confession time: I never learned to tie a bow properly but I did learn a cheat's tip - wear a ready-made bow and carry an untied one in your pocket. When it gets late and everybody has had several too many drinks, take off the bowtie and replace it with the artfully-draped classic tie.
sarabee1995 · 26-30, F
@ArtieKat No reverse hand-eye coordination, huh?
ArtieKat · M
@sarabee1995 Precisely! That's why I'm no good at sports!

Before and after - good thing you can't see my eyes!
OliRos · 22-25, F
@ArtieKat @sarabee1995 The subject of these "before" and "after" photographs presumably falls into the category of absinthe-minded.
JoyfulSilence · 51-55, M
I like bowtie pasta. In a creamy alfredo sauce with chicken or shrimp.

Does Acela have a dining car?
sarabee1995 · 26-30, F
@JoyfulSilence Yeah, there's a "snack bar" in the middle car. I'd hardly call it a dining car though.
JoyfulSilence · 51-55, M
@sarabee1995

Maybe they have cookies.

JustNik · 51-55, F
I love bowties. We see them on a number of our doctors here, and it seems to be a conscious choice for the young ones, whether they’re going to be a bowtie doc. They feel more personable and accessible and trustworthy in that profession. Otherwise I find them sweetly nostalgic, like the man wearing them is just who he is and not affected so much by what the rest of the world has decided. Funny how such a small thing can create such inexplicably strong sensations. 🤷‍♀️
sarabee1995 · 26-30, F
@JustNik
"...the man wearing them is just who he is and not affected so much by what the rest of the world has decided..."
This is exactly the impression I have when I see someone in a bowtie. And I like that. Self assured. Not concerned with the opinions of others. 👍
Harmonium1923 · 56-60, M
I used to wear bow ties when I was younger (I work in business). I thought I’d make it my signature, especially since I’m short and slim and have trouble finding ties my size. But ultimately I decided it wasn’t quite the professional image I wanted and I’ve worn regular neckties for many years now.
sarabee1995 · 26-30, F
@Harmonium1923 Interesting. "Make it your signature"?

Was the idea then to make you more memorable?

Or to provide a more upscale impression?

Or something else?
Harmonium1923 · 56-60, M
@sarabee1995 I wanted to be distinctive, classy and a bit old fashioned. But at some point it started to feel more geeky.
sarabee1995 · 26-30, F
@Harmonium1923 Got it! 🙂
vetguy1991 · 51-55, M
I wore one at the engineer ball
sarabee1995 · 26-30, F
@vetguy1991 Did you like it? Prefer it over a straight tie?
vetguy1991 · 51-55, M
@sarabee1995 i prefer a straight tie

@Suesinglemom I agree.
TexChik · F
I think on older gentlemen it's very dapper. I don't like them on younger men unless they are wearing a Tux.

As far as on women i have never been a fan as a fashion statement . A collar buttoned up to the neck is sufficient
sarabee1995 · 26-30, F
@TexChik Lol ... just socks for me! ;)
OliRos · 22-25, F
@sarabee1995 That's smart.
sarabee1995 · 26-30, F
@OliRos It's not by choice. Nothing fits me.

@Straylight Lol, I agree!!
Longpatrol · 31-35, M
Last time I wore a bowtie was for First Communion when I was 9-10. Not really a fan of em' too old fashioned.
sarabee1995 · 26-30, F
@Longpatrol Oh I don't consider them old fashioned at all. Definitely not every day wear, but very nice to see in certain circumstances.
2ndtimeguy · 61-69, M
Were ok for awhile now usually much older gentlemen than me wear them
sarabee1995 · 26-30, F
@2ndtimeguy And sometimes younger gentlemen as well! 😁
The only time I've ever worn a bowtie is with a tux.
sarabee1995 · 26-30, F
@BizSuitStacy So only when you had to? Don't like them?
@sarabee1995 weddings mostly, and high school prom. They're ok...I just see them as something more for formal events as opposed to a daily fashion statement. I wore regular ties for years to work.
sarabee1995 · 26-30, F
@BizSuitStacy I work with two guys who wear them daily in place of neck ties. Just an alternative. Doesn't need to be formal.
ineedadrink · 56-60, M
I'm so stodgy that I don't like them. Always associated them with a "hey, look at me" mentality and that is totally not my personality.
sarabee1995 · 26-30, F
@ineedadrink For some, I'm quite sure it is that. But for others it is more of a "I care about the impression I give". 🤷‍♀️
Julien · 36-40, M
Suspenders and bow tie
sarabee1995 · 26-30, F
@Julien Love it!
Strictmichael75 · 61-69, M
Nit a lover of bowties
But certainly love ties and cuff links
sarabee1995 · 26-30, F
@Strictmichael75 Interesting. So if you like cuff links, then you are not opposed to getting gussied up for the right occasion. So why no to bodies? Just don't like them?
andreafg · 26-30, F
I like them in men
sarabee1995 · 26-30, F
@andreafg It does sort of indicate a gentleman who puts in a little extra effort, right?

@sarabee1995 I'm talking about how I felt as a child re myself. I don't like that word myself but was very self-conscious about people staring at me on stage , sitting at a piano. Difficult to explain ; felt a bit like a performing monkey. The most offensive thing anybody could say about me was to compare me to Liberace.
sarabee1995 · 26-30, F
@alan20 Understood.
alan20 · M
@sarabee1995 Thanks ❤️
basilfawlty89 · 36-40, M
Controversial opinion here maybe, but unless you're wearing a tuxedo or it's a white tie event, there's no excuse for a bow tie unless you want to look like a clown or a geezer, or possibly both.
basilfawlty89 · 36-40, M
@ArtieKat indeed, to each their own, but I can't help but be reminded of Tucker Carlson if I see a younger bloke wearing a bow tie with casual or business attire.
ArtieKat · M
@basilfawlty89
if I see a younger bloke wearing a bow tie
You may have a point and it is only men with a certain amount of gravitas who can carry it off
