Bowtie? Or no?

I'm about to board the Acela train to NY Penn Station for meetings in NYC this afternoon and tomorrow. So I'm sitting here at the Providence Amtrak station and so far I've scoped four elderly gentlemen with bowties.

Two of them just look like retired guys who like to look dapper. One of them I recognize as a professor at my undergrad university here in Providence. I didn't have him, but I recognize him from around campus. Never seen him without a bowtie. The fourth guy actually doesn't look that old, maybe mid fifties. He's in a very nice suit, very expensive looking and definitely tailored. Maybe a banker?

So, do you wear bowties?
If yes, why?
If no, what do you think when you see a bowtie?

And girls... I'm asking you too! Do you wear them? What do you think of them? Or of men in them?

Let's talk fashion!

Standard neckties were part of our school uniform. I wore one just about every school day from the age of eight to eighteen.

Bow ties would have been a welcome alternative, certainly.

My dressing up tends towards formal gowns, though I can see the attraction and style of the photograph posted by @ArtieKat. I can well imagine turning up like that to one of Mummy and Daddy's Christmas parties.

Bow ties on guys - away from the DJ/tux - can be stylish, but must be supported by a good quality and well-ironed shirt and a bespoke suit. Otherwise, they can be redolent of the classic absent-minded professor.

Ah, yes, important distinction. The bowtie can be the finishing touch on a well curated ensemble, or the incongruous afterthought. Very important indeed.

@sarabee1995 Very well put, Sara! Exactly!

@OliRos I have a work "social" event next week on your side of the pond. I'm wondering now how many bowties I'll see. It's "business attire" not "formal" but as you know many will come in formal attire anyway. I might have to post a bowtie update! 🤣🤣🤣

@sarabee1995 I guess that could rather depend on just what your business is...

@sarabee1995 You've just reminded me that an elderly cousin of mine (actually similar age to my parents' generation) who was the primary link on "Star Wars" between the MOD and The Pentagon (presumably) always wore flamboyant bow-ties to work. He was miffed because he didn't get a knighthood so moved the whole family to just outside DC.

@ArtieKat Couldn't he just buy his own round table?

@sarabee1995 Wicked!

@sarabee1995 As Alan Clark observed, any Englishman who has to buy his own furniture is beneath consideration.

@OliRos Does this count as a bowtie?

OliRos · 22-25, F
@SunshineGirl 😂😂😂 No! That counts as undressed!

But cute.

@SunshineGirl Definitely not, but I like the look! 😉
