That's so sad. I had hoped when they found it, and said they heard noises that those poor souls could be saved. I pray they didn't suffer. 😞

@hippyjoe1955 I hope it's some comfort to their loved ones to know they didn't suffer.
hippyjoe1955 · 70-79, M
@AbbeyRhode as little consolation as that is you are right. Bad design + poor construction = instant death.
Heartlander · 80-89, M
@AbbeyRhode It was likely an instant death. Crushed :( It's hard to say if there was a warning though,
By comparison, the air pressure differential for an airplane at 35,000 feet with a cabin at 5,000 feet would be about 9 or 10 pounds per square inch. The water pressure at 12,000 feet deep would be more like 5,000 pounds per square inch.

That's really sad because people shouldn't be hating on them just because that they could afford the trip down. But I'm hoping they went very quickly, because that would be much more preferable than a slow death
Ynotisay · M
@Disgustedman I think only two of them were "tourists." The other three had backgrounds as real explorers. They all they knew the risk. Comes with the territory.
But I'd read that there were a lot of issues around the sub. Cutting corners. There had been some efforts from the outside to slow their roll. I guess some things you don't cut corners on.

@Disgustedman @Ynotisay They said that death was instant when the sub imploded. At least the air didn't run out with people gasping for breath. 💔😢
Eddiesolds · 61-69, M
This is so sad. I just heard this. My heart breaks for all of them.
@Eddiesolds I think the whole world does. 😢

@Musicman Yes . I agree

@Musicman thank God they are saying it was instant at least!!!

I hope some new maritime laws are made because of this incident.
It should be a example of what not to do in regards to safety. And safety of the public.
There is a need for such risk taking. Yet not at the safety of the public.

@DeWayfarer I don't know about making laws. But for sure they need redundancy systems.
And at least two submersibles. That would be like going to the moon, but maybe one could
tow the other if they were in trouble. Know doubt things will change now.

@DogMan it takes laws to enforce anything. No matter what it is. A few have mentioned hubris. Only laws can enforce against hubris.
BTW there is laws for space vehicles in order to launch them to begin with. And they are enforced through verification by the US government.
This submarine just was never verified by anyone. No laws required it. Warnings though were given by two different agencies, which went unheeded.
That's hubris.

And perhaps spare a thought for the 30 people who drowned off the coast of Gran Canaria on Wednesday and the 500 people unaccounted for in a major incident off the Greek coast last week.

@SunshineGirl The Greek coast incident had been neatly forgotten by this.

So sad. I’d like to think the media would back off now and leave the families to grieve in peace. All the speculation an untruths about what did or didn’t happen, how quick or otherwise it would have been etc can’t be helping them cone to terms with their loss.
Media back off? I know. They won’t. But I wish they would just leave it now.

@Freddie222 Yep! Sadly lies and unuendo make for good ratings not the truth. ☹️
Freddie222 · M
@Musicman yep. The headlines sell the papers. Well in the old days they did. Now with so much intelligence to hand, ‘experts’ to give options, and dickhead news companies spinning it up, we don’t know what to believe.
Hope they will just leave the souls alone now. But we know they won’t.

@Spoiledbrat That is just terrible. 💔😢😢😢

That's really too bad. But that submarine sounded like it was a disaster waiting to happen. Too bad it took for one for people to start taking the risks seriously, like always.
ExperienceDLT · M
I wonder if the banging noises they claimed to have heard was noises from the sub imploding and breaking apart
@ExperienceDLT A lot of people are wondering that.

Alexa just told me. I dont watch news, plus been asleep. Working tonight. Sad for them.

{@musicman] you can send heart felt sympathy out too the family of those lost on the titan 😞sadly the titanic claims another five victim
akindheart · 61-69, F
i just saw this. i wonder when it happened. how very sad.
hippyjoe1955 · 70-79, M
@akindheart I have read several articles that said the sub was poorly engineered and even more poorly tested. It should have had NDT radioactive testing done on both the structure and the welds. The company decided to use ultrasound instead. I have no idea if the reports are accurate or not but if they are true then it is a good thing the CEO of the company was aboard. He would have owed billions in liability.
Barefooter25 · 46-50, M
RIP. Condolences and prayers to their families. 😞🥀
redredred · M
It would have been quick. They didn’t drown, they got crushed.
MrBrownstone · 46-50, M
@redredred Are you a submarine expert?
redredred · M
No. I’m am a literate human being who can read and understand the effects of pressure on vehicles. I was alive when the Thresher went down and followed the analysis with great interest. No one aboard the Thresher drowned either; they were crushed before they had a chance to drown.
The best submarines in the world are built a few miles from me and I learned to weld from a submarine welder whose work tolerances are ten times more demanding than NASA standards.
Do you have more questions?@MrBrownstone

@redredred Why did you make a big deal of me doing the EXACT same thing on another post? So now you have time to answer questions.

No.

@Roundandroundwego I have no problem with freedom of movement. My problem is when they expect others to pay for it. If you don't have a job, skills or money why should we let them in?
Roundandroundwego · 61-69
@Musicman the EU and the USA lie about being too poor to afford immigrant welfare. It's still a government responsibility - but it's working as an excuse! People think you proved that you can deny human rights claiming poverty! You are! Europe is killing to keep out the poor and warring to displace people globally, as a NATO partner.
Humanity has already faced that fact. Trying to survive the West is called "suicide"! NATO isn't going to let us.

@Roundandroundwego Again I completely disagree with you, but that is the fabulous part of free speech. We are both allowed to voice our opinion. And as in this thread we can do it civilly.
So sad and tragic
@Underconstruction Yes it is 💔😢😢😢
DogMan · 61-69, M
They said it imploded on Sunday, is that right? I wonder why they waited before telling
people?
people?
Ynotisay · M
@DogMan Here's their reasoning. It says the Navy detected a possible implosion and shared it just prior to the Coast Guard publicly sharing the sub had gone missing.
(NPR) While not definitive, this information was immediately shared with the Incident Commander to assist with the ongoing search and rescue mission," the first official said. "The decision was made to continue our mission as a search and rescue and make every effort to save the lives on board."

Does it mean that the guys got crushed inside?
Budwick · 70-79, M
Well, that sucks.
Barefooter25 · 46-50, M
@Musicman That submarine has been reported to have several problems from the beginning. Instead of using a secondary hull, an experimental fiber glass was used to built the Titan. Even some former tourists who previously went down admitted it was more of a "suicide mission" due to various issues with the submarine. Not having a transponder or search beacon was just one of many of the problems. ☹️
checkoutanytime · 41-45, M
$250,000 ticket to go 13,000 feet under the water, I have 0 remorse for stupidity. Some things are not ment for humans to concur, the oceans depths is one of them.

@pancakeslam Yes it is. ☹️
Rolexeo · 26-30, M
They're dead
Something tells me that this is now the end to private exploration without heavy governmental oversight.
@NativePortlander1970 The submarine definitely should have had a transponder. Even if they were not carrying passengers it should be a requirement.
