Children calling their parents by their first name is weird. The younger the children are the weirder it seems.

If either of my kids ever call me Donna I’d pack them off to a sweat shop making Apple products.
Raffiki · 22-25, F
I used to have nicknames for my mom that were nothing to do with her real name, I’d call her some random name and it would stick for a while. Actual names like Sue or Lisa. Longest I went calling her one exclusively was about 2 years, and I got my siblings involved. She found it funny and never minded.

My kid calls me mummy or “bum bum” or “butty”, which she thinks are hilarious. She calls me by my real name sometimes too. But 90% of the time is mummy so whatever. I don’t mind 😂

I know a 3 year old who calls her mom by her real name, she’s super intelligent for her age and insists she has to call her mom what everybody else does 🤪
WaryWitchWandering · 36-40, F
My 2yr old learned my name is not mom and he sometimes says “I love you (name)”

Haha I think it’s cute 🤷🏻‍♀️ he doesn’t call me by that when talking with me
Pfuzylogic · M
My sister did that when she got into high school. I didn’t learn until 40 years later that my mom assaulted her while I went to college.
dakotaviper · 56-60, M
I did that once and never did it again. Can still feel the slap across the face.
BarbossasHusband · 36-40, M
I don't like calling my mom "mom" bc I never felt like she was one, really.

I still call her mom tho, so I won't offend her fragile ego.
BarbossasHusband · 36-40, M
@pride49 heaven is being able to live as your true self.
Hell is being forced to be someone you're not. Anything else is a middle hround.

That's what I think anyway
pride49 · 31-35, M
@BarbossasHusband well I'm in hell atm
BarbossasHusband · 36-40, M
@pride49 atleast it's the kind of hell you can get out of, eventually. I hope you get out of it soon.

So disrespectful! Shows lack of discipline and respect.

@Gloomy funny it worked well for kids up until the past 10-20 years.
Gloomy · F
@Ravens80 You'd need to provide credible sources for hat.
Childrens rights are relatively new and not in place everywhere but at least make research possible since it changed the way we view kids as being their own individuals who have a right not to be beaten.
DemureDeb · 56-60, F
I agree with you totally. I find that very offensive and disrespectful. My kids have never called their dad or me by our first names. We've always been Mom and Dad.
I once did that and soon was chided and humbled by a good dressing down! Glad I learned that early on.
JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
I still don't call my mother by her name; I'm 54.
LushMagic · 46-50, F
@JimboSaturn Too right 🙂
I’ve honestly never understood that. There were only two people in this world I would ever be able to call Mom & Dad. Nobody else. I was okay with that.
SW-User
I called my father by his first name.

He called me by my second name, which no one else has ever used.

My second name was his first name,
SW-User
@SW-User But my children call me dad!
I always wanted to see Beaver..in Leave It To Beaver...address his dad as Ward😆

He'd be grounded and the season cancelled!
JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
I do find it weird calling my inlaws mom and dad though.
@JimboSaturn I called my MIL "Mama Helena", which made both her and my mother happy.
JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
@bijouxbroussard It's not done much in Canada. Plus I didn't really like my parents in law much so I couldn't call them that lol
WaryWitchWandering · 36-40, F
I think it’s interesting how serious people take this, after reading comments.

I suppose I don’t see it that way Bc my children are so young and they only have said it because they thought it was crazy mindblowing that my name isn’t mama/mommy/mom

They do not address me in such a way on a regular basis, but like I had said, my son has started occasionally randomly saying “I love you (first name)” and giggling because he thinks it’s silly
deadgerbil · 26-30
It would be so weird for me to do that. I can understand if they have a terrible relationship tho
looping · 18-21
its that behaviour that makes kids call their parents by their first names to begin with lol
Budwick · 70-79, M
Children calling their parents by their first name is disrespectful.
I would not tolerate it.
Gloomy · F
To me it indicates a very bad parent- child relationship
JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
@Gloomy I find it some kind of strange denial of familial relationships.
ArtieKat · M
I always called my parents "Mum" and "Dad" but in my late teens I stopped calling my uncles and aunts "Uncle so-and-so" and "Auntie so-and-so". One of my cousins used to call her parents by their first names but she worked in the family business with them so I suppose it was more understandable.
Poppies · 61-69, F
My daughter waited until she was out on her own to start calling me by my first name. It amuses her. It struck me as weird at first but now I'm used to it. Picking my battles. Actually I have few disagreements with her these days.
Yes it is very weird- the only "parents" I call by their first names are my in-laws.
@SW-User Yes, you are in laws so you will be called by your first names.
@BritishFailedAesthetic Some people do call their in laws "Mum" and "Dad", though...
@HootyTheNightOwl Can't imagine why 😖
In my house it was yes mother and sir for dad. To call them anything other would be seen as disrespectful and would earn us the belt
SW-User
@nevergiveup Fortunately the belt is now illegal in England.
@SW-User Different times back then.

I call my parents by their first name out of habit after they'd stop answering to me calling out to them as "mom" or "dad" in public places, lol. They don't care.
Ilovebustyladies · 51-55, M
When I grew up there was a family a few doors up that used there first names all the time it was was strange at first but you got used to it lol
pride49 · 31-35, M
I call my mother by her name sometimes. She's used to ignoring me when I say mom sooooo
First name it is
Northwest · M
Or referring to them as their roommates.
JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
@Northwest What? wtf?
Northwest · M
@JimboSaturn Not mine, but heard it.
JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
@Northwest That is very fucked up, it's like they are too cool for being in a family .
JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
I was a little upset when my daughter started calling me dad instead of daddy lol
Fluffybull · F
My sister never wanted to be called "mum" so she had her kids call her by her first name. 🙄
SW-User
I started using Mother and Father for dramatic effect when I talk to my parents.🫣
Yep... that's a clear sign of disrespect.
Gloomy · F
@BizSuitStacy a clear sign that something is wrong in the family
Thevy29 · 41-45, M
What would you do if your were called a "C#nt" by one of them?
SW-User
no, Donna, it i snot time for a nap.... lol 🤣
SW-User
ikr, I wouldn't like it
Jacko1971 · 51-55, M
Quite right too.
DDonde · 31-35, M
I called my grandparents on side of the family that way. Never my own parents though.
MethDozer · M
IWhen I worked with my mother at the same place O called her by her name instead of mom out of proffesionalism. Other than that my sister andbI might occasionally use her or my father's name in a jes lt but not in actual calling to them.
My baby cousin, Lisa, was born when I was 19 and is a bit slow, she never grasped the concept of mom and dad, so she called my uncle and his wife what everyone else did, their first names.
