@HootyTheNightOwl damn! Now i feel lucky
@Alexa98 I wouldn't, if I were you... being drugged is little better just because it affected you differently.

In some ways, non-physical abuse is more harmful because it leaves no visible marks. People are less likely to notice it and challenge it - which is what we need as a society to end abuse.

Neither of those have ever made me tired. I've had so much benedryl over the years I might as well take sugar pills.
Nitrous oxide at the dentist when a kid is whole nother story. Weee

Sedatives of all types where used for decades on end on kids. Heck even hallucinogens to calm kids down.

The use of sedatives and other medications on children has a controversial history.

Historical Context of Sedative Use
Sedatives and Tranquilizers

For many decades, sedatives and tranquilizers were prescribed to children for various reasons, from anxiety and behavioral issues to insomnia. Medications like benzodiazepines and barbiturates were commonly used, often without thorough consideration of the long-term effects. Some practitioners believed that these drugs could help manage hyperactivity or agitation.

Hallucinogen Use

More surprisingly, certain hallucinogens were also explored in therapeutic contexts. For instance, substances like LSD were investigated in the mid-20th century as potential treatments for various psychological issues, including behavioral problems in children. However, the risks and ethical concerns surrounding these practices led to a significant decline in their use.

Risks and Controversy

The historical reliance on these substances raises important questions about safety and ethics. Long-term effects on developing brains were often under-researched or inadequately understood. Consequently, there has been a shift towards alternative therapies, including behavioral therapy and lifestyle changes, to address these issues more holistically.

Current Practices

Today, the medical community tends to favor non-pharmacological interventions whenever possible. When medication is necessary, there's typically a more rigorous approach to evaluation and monitoring, focusing on evidence-based practices.

My mother often gave me cough medicine which she made from bourbon as a kid.
Mcmarie90 · 31-35, F
I had allergies so I got Benadryl a lot, almost every day from spring to summer. I do remember mom saying it would help me sleep, but only after I was like..... 12 or so?
BrandNewMan · 61-69, M
As a kid ? No

I put myself to sleep w melatonin pretty regularly now. Does more to help me than anything other than hard physical labor or activity .. but I ride a desk chair a lot.

@Perry1968 idk i had working parents who worked too much now that i work i dont have that energy everyday too
Perry1968 · M
@Alexa98 I worked my backside off. Sometimes 15 hours a day. Years of 12 hour shifts. Kids can be nuisances but melatonin isnt the way to get them to sleep imho. A decent routine is. With adequate discipline.
IronHamster · 56-60, M
Melatonin does nothing to me. I had a friend that was a brain cancer survivor that swore by it, but his situation had specific medical reasons it was helpful.

I think it's really fucked up to drug a kid like that.
CrazyMusicLover · 31-35
No. But I heard people accusing others of doing that to their kids and it was seen as a very bad thing to do. Not melatonin, nobody knew about it then, more like sleep pills.
NotLooking2Play · 100+, F
My mother used alcohol on a wash rag. She just told me last night that I used to suck on that wash rag for all I was worth. I probably did. She drank during her pregnancy with me every day, and I was born drunk, so ya... However, no melatonin or Benadryl.🤷‍♀
Perry1968 · M
@NotLooking2Play The 60s and 70s were pretty messed up times. Geesus. Im sorry. I feel you.
NotLooking2Play · 100+, F
@Perry1968 I feel for you too..🤗
FreeSpirit1 · 51-55, F
When I was a kid we didn’t sit around all day so we were tired when bedtime came,
BrandonWyatt36 · 36-40, M
🙅🙅🙅🚫🚫🚫🛑🛑🛑 ONE MORE TIME... I know I have work but if I ever DO get to have a daughter... If she was up all night I would seriously sit up with her.... I would put myself through it just for her... FR FR ❤❤❤❤
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
No. My mum was a nurse, it would never have crossed her mind. Physical exercise and fresh air sent us to sleep.
Convivial · 26-30, F
I think probably very common.. Would you do that today work your kids?
Justmeraeagain · 56-60, F
That never happened to me and my children only got Benadryl when their allergies were acting up
Mudkip · 31-35, M
Even though my parents never did, I think my generation’s folks used alcohol, like whiskey or brandy, to knock the kids out.
YoMomma ·
My direct family doesn't use drugs/meds but my mom’s family may have idk
PatKirby · M
I actually use low dose melatonin now and then for insomnia.
ViciDraco · 41-45, M
If it happened, I didn't know about it. I'm assuming not as I was pretty good at keeping to myself as a child
when I was a kid went to bed at dark. after picking cotton for 10 hrs.
RedBaron · M
Back in that part of the day for me was nearly 60 years ago and no, my parents never did that.
hippyjoe1955 · 70-79, M
Those things weren't available when I was a kid so I sometimes went to sleep with a very sore bottom.
Thevy29 · 41-45, M
zonavar68 · 56-60, M

JRVanguard · 26-30, M

That sounds really bad
Dan193 · 31-35, M
No, bit I've heard it in movies, so I guess enough people did it, to be a thing in movies
JackDaniels · 46-50, M
Nope with fear.
RosaMarie · 46-50, F

SunshineMom · 41-45, F

swirlie · 31-35
No, but my mom occasionally gave me a half a tab of LSD before bedtime to get me to settle down after bath time though.
Swoop62 · M
Never put to sleep with anything.
Quimliqer · 70-79, M
They hadn’t invented those yet!!
Alexa98 · 26-30, F
@Quimliqer actually they have been for a long time i think was not that common
Alexa98 · 26-30, F
@Quimliqer you right on the melatonin but i think benadryl (not in that exact brand) was out for a long time fairly
Quimliqer · 70-79, M
@Alexa98 You’re right, invented in 1943 as a prescription medication only. In 1982 it was approved for otc sales!
Musicman · 61-69, M
No I wasn't. My parents never did that to me.
Bleak · 36-40, F
I would be put to sleep with a lullaby.
My late ex fiancee did it to her younger son, advised by a dr by what she claimed.
