Do people ever tell you you don't look like the ethnicity you are?

I'm Hispanic/Latino (Mexican and Argentinian descent, mostly), I have a Spanish surname, yet people tell me all the time I don't look it 😅 They've never been to Latin America, I guess. A lot of people of European descent there, and various eye, hair, and skin colors. "Hispanic" covers a wide range.

I'm half Irish, half Italian. I mainly look Irish as I have fair skin and auburn hair. I remember one of my second cousins on my Italian side said, "You don't really look Italian." It wasn't until years later I thought to myself, "Neither do you " lol. 🤷‍♀( she's half Italian , half English).
One of my cousins told me my eyes looked like my Sicilian grandmother, I said "oh you're right!".
It's Def interesting how we have certain recessive traits or dominant ones of our heritage.

My mother is part Scottish and Irish and my father is German. I have my mother's side of the family with fair skin. My brothers were more on my father's side with dark features and can tan in the sun when I can't. It is definitely an interesting dynamic

My ancestry is Mexican on my dad's side (my grandad was a full blooded Nahua), and Irish and Scottish in my mom's.
I also get the whole "you don't look Hispanic" nonsense.
There are people in Mexico with my ancestry like Damian Chapa and Carlos Gallardo.

People also need to understand that Hispanic just means the main language used as communication in the country your family originally came from. It's like Francophone or Anglosphere. It's got nothing to do with race or ethnicity.

@basilfawlty89 Yeah. “Latino” is even more broad, as it can include Brazil. The countries in the Western Hemisphere south of the US can be very diverse.
@WestonT Although I'm Italian on both sides, my maternal grandmother lived in Argentina and had blonde hair and blue eyes. But there were so many influences on Italy, including occupation for a long time by the Normans.

That kind of comment usually reveals a kind of prejudice about what any particular person 'should look like'. Personally, I try to fight hard against assumptions about who people are and try to form an opinion as I get to know them. Ethnicity says nothing about your character, abilities or value as a human being.

I'm of Irish and English descent - with Irish surname, but people always ask if I'm French. Not really sure why, as the French have a diverse look afaik. Doesn't matter, I was born and live in the U.S.

Am indian as in south Asian it really doesn't matter what your ancestry is because you can't do much about it what you CAN do is be a good human being compassionate,polite,approachable,helpful to others ...
@romell Well-said, sir!

@SW-User Thank you.

Dad's nunga/half something else. Mum's family line on both sides were convicts from England. People say I look Fuegian.
When I was younger people would often speak Spanish to me. That happens to a lot of people in my family. I know that there are black people who are also Latino (my late husband was Afro-Cuban) but we are not.

I’m not sure why but lots of people think I’m Japanese- in reality I’m of mixed English and Chinese heritage. 😂😂

My main ethnic background is Portuguese. But the fact that I have blond hair and blue eyes makes people think I'm German or Norwegian or something. I'm not any part that that I know of. I am part Croatian though. 🤔
DearAmbellina2113 · 41-45, F
I am Scottish, Irish, English, Czech, and west African.

I get asked all the time if I am Latina. 🤷🏻‍♀
Well, famously, there's a large Welsh community in Argentina, hence the surnames like Griffiths, Brown and Thomas. I bet they don't look that Hispanic :P
@wildland And Germans in SE Brazil! Yes. Good info/points
uncalled4 · 56-60, M
I'm Italian, but I do get mistaken for Hispanic.
RockerDad · M
I get mistaken for Latino sometimes, or sometimes Italian
