Can you drive a stick shift?

I would love to have that skill with cars

Up until fairly recently the majority of cars in the UK were manual (had a stick shift) not automatic so I have always driven a manual as have both my kids.
There has been a move towards semi automatic on recent years and I am not sure electric vehicles have a gear box at all so it could be a dying skill.
@MrAverage1965 Manual transmissions were more effecient (got better gas mileage) until around 2010. As more cars featured 6 or 8 speed automatic transmissions, the manual advantage started to disappear.

@Like2play in rural areas yes
Like2play · M
@WowwGirl why?
HumanEarth · F
Yes I can and I own 4 vehicles on the farm that are

One is a 1977 Kenworth 18 speed

(Looks something like this, ours is a lot more beat up from years of farm use

HumanEarth · F
If you driven them for 40 plus years, you wouldn't even notice. Trust me. I have driven them most of my life till recently
Gibbon · 70-79, M
@Khenpal1 It's not the arms. It's the left leg in backed up city traffic.
HumanEarth · F
If you know how to shift without using the clutch. Your knee will thank you. If you're good you only need the clutch for starting from stop and to double clutch to the higher gears
ArishMell · 70-79, M
For me the question would be "Can I drive an automatic?" Yes but with some practice.

I owned a car with automatic transmission for a while, and once drove an hired one (I had requested manual) but all the other cars and vans I had ever owned including my present one, have had manual gearboxes.
Yes indeed. Grew up using stick shift on tractors and cars. Automatics are great in stop start highway congestion, but a manual lends itself to enjoyable, controlled driving.

Not unfortunately. My dad tried to get me to drive his blue 88 ford ranger xlt longbed 5 speed truck and I couldn’t get my foot timing right. It kept on shutting down at a stop sign and I had to keep cranking it. 6 cars behind us started honking and he said come on get us out of here! Well I fired it up and somehow I got it right and punched the gas and floored it in 1st gear. Changing gears isn’t a problem when you’re moving. It’s the taking off or having to stop and switch the gears back.
ArishMell · 70-79, M
@tfan123 Selecting first gear from neutral should be no harder than changing gear on the move, so I wonder if the vehicle's clutch or gearbox was out of adjustment or something?
tfan123 · 46-50, M
@ArishMell no idea but he could shift that thing faster than I’ve ever seen
ArishMell · 70-79, M
@tfan123 Ah - he'd be used to its foibles.
tallpowerhouseblonde · 36-40, F
Yes.I learned to drive and passed my test with a stick shift. Here in England we just call them manual. Most cars here are stick shift. All my cars have been a stick shift.
Harmonium1923 · 51-55, M
I’m buying a new car next week which will be my first stick shift! I know how to drive one but this will be the first time I’ve had one as my daily driver. Just wanted to try something different.
Sevendays · M
Yep, since I was 12 or so. I lived just on the edge of town and I had field cars. I also owned a company that had trucks and needed a CDL. 10 speeds, 13 speeds and 16 speeds.
FreddieUK · 70-79, M
Yes, but have driven hybrids for 10+ years so they are all without conventional gears - foot down and go.
Yes, and my wife can too.

I could teach you the basics in 15 minutes (you'll have to provide the manual transmission car).
icedsky · 51-55, M
Yes. Learned driving in an old Chevy truck with a 3 on the tree manual. Have had several others in the past and currently have a manual 6 speed in a Honda Accord coupe
Hatt94 · 56-60, MVIP
Yup. Many vehicles i have owned were manuals. Also drove semi for many years. And have a couple motorcycles.
I think so, but I haven't tried in 15 years or so. I doubt I'd be fluid with one to start, but I suspect I'd do OK.
Yeah, in the UK most people learn to drive a manual. Only the minority learn in automatics, although it's becoming more common.
exexec · 70-79, C
Yes, and both of my children had to learn how to drive one before I let them get a license.
Barefooter25 · 46-50, M
Unfortunately, I never learned to drive stick shift. I have only driven automatic cars. My dad did drive a stick shift truck many years ago.
Gibbon · 70-79, M
Yezzz. Learned and tested on one. Can even up and down shift without using the clutch. Heal and toe baby.
Kiesel · 56-60, M
Yep. What I learned with
akindheart · 61-69, F
yes i can. one of the first cars i drove was a VW bug
wildbill83 · 41-45, M
everything from "3 on the tree's", to twin sticks/duplex, to 18 speeds (though quite frankly, anything more than a 13 speed is pointless). 8ll's, spicers, super 10's, and 13's are the most common around here; especially for dump trucks
Tracos · 51-55, M
yeah... I drive a manual six gear diesel, it will be over when I move to electric so I will postpone that for a fit
Ashleighrox · 31-35, F
Lilymoon · F
No, I learned on automatic... would be cool to know tho

Yes, but I haven't driven one in nigh-on 20 years.
CrazyMusicLover · 31-35
Ehh, I passed the test but that's it. I'd rather try automatic, tbh.
CrazyMusicLover · 31-35
@WowwGirl I had no idea something like that existed until now.
WowwGirl · 36-40, F

MethDozer · M
Yes, and it's really pretty quick and easy to pick up on and get the hang of. It's not hard or rocket science. It can be a little finicky in underpowered vehicles but that's about it.
Elessar · 26-30, M
That's what I drive daily
