Syrup burn smell near my steering wheel

Very strange to smell that, it started 2 day ago. Then was fine the next day. Now again a strong syrup smell near my steering as I drive. Any ideas??? This time it lasted ten minutes.

Could be wires, possibly a fluid issue. Check radiator, brake fluid, check the overflow tank for the radiator, look under the car for any leaks, if you park it in the same spot at home for example, do you see any dried up or fresh small puddles from under the car?

If it keeps going like that I personally would have it looked at

Glycol often has that smell. It a main ingredient of anti freeze. check for coolent leaks, cracked hoses that sort of thing. Heater core could be bad.

@GerOttman Would it do it even if the heat wasn't turned on?
GerOttman · 70-79, M
@Coralmist yes, you still have flow through the heater core once the engine thermostat opens up. turning the heat on just opens a damper to allow the fan to send air through the core.

@GerOttman Ty for your ideas🪻

If it’s inside the vehicle, most likely a heater core. It’s the only place coolant enters the passenger compartment.

Monitor coolant level to verify. If this is the worst possible time ever to have an expensive car repair, you can bypass it, but you won’t have heat

Some wires burning
hippyjoe1955 · 70-79, M
Just curious if it happens when you start the car or after the car has been running for a while.
hippyjoe1955 · 70-79, M
@Coralmist I am not sure because any time I handled power steering fluid it pretty much smelled like oil. It is'n't a very strong smell either and it doesn't get very hot so it wouldn't be burning.
Coralmist · 41-45, F
@hippyjoe1955 Ty I appreciate that. So maybe it was a wire near the steering column that is getting too hot or broken? I'm just not sure if I should take it in immediately or if I can drive local for a bit? It takes fifteen minutes of driving before it starts the smell.
hippyjoe1955 · 70-79, M
@Coralmist I honestly think it is your cooling system. Whether it is your heater core or a leaky radiator or a hose that starts to leak when the engine warms up.
Quimliqer · 70-79, M
You have a short in the wiring inside the steering column. Get it checked!!
Coralmist · 41-45, F
@Quimliqer It should be ok until I get home a half hour away?
It might be a coolant leak, you should probably check it
Coralmist · 41-45, F
@romell I checked the temperature gauge and it was fine during the smell...not going to H
MethDozer · M
@Coralmist check your coolent levels and make sure it is topped off and watch your engine temp.
MethDozer · M
@romell your motor will seize ong before it catches fire from not having coolent
icedsky · 51-55, M
Did you have a latte or mocha while driving? Possibly splash some while sailing over a speed bump or pothole?
Coralmist · 41-45, F
@icedsky Unfortunately no

It’s serious, don't drive it. That sweet syrup smell is coolant, could be a heater core or other leak. Get a mechanic to check it. Be safe
Coralmist · 41-45, F
@tenente I have to drive about a half hour home... Hopefully it'll be ok until then ? It just started today

@Coralmist
I have to drive about a half hour home

Coolant leaks can escalate quickly to engine failure or worse: fire hazards. I'd tow it and find a another way home.
Coralmist · 41-45, F
@tenente I took my chances and luckily it didn't make the smell until about five minutes away from home. I'm going to get it to the mechanic this week. Ty 🍀

Antifreeze has a pancake syrup smell when its old or is burning. You probably have a heater core leak
