Syrup burn smell near my steering wheel

Very strange to smell that, it started 2 day ago. Then was fine the next day. Now again a strong syrup smell near my steering as I drive. Any ideas??? This time it lasted ten minutes.

Just curious if it happens when you start the car or after the car has been running for a while.

@hippyjoe1955 It began fifteen minutes after running/driving.

@Coralmist I suspect it has to do with the cooling system but it could be wires. Smelly wires don't usually last very long so if it is that I think they would have burned out by now. As my mechanic buddy said that every electrical component has some smoke it it and if you let the smoke out it won't work any more.

@hippyjoe1955 im wondering if it's power steering components? I heard a few knocking noises in wheel over summer than didn't happen again. My mechanic said it's fine and that make does that. But perhaps the scent is a power steering leak??

@Coralmist I don't think you would smell power steering fluid through the steering wheel. The servos and the pumps and the cylinders are not in the steering wheel column.

@hippyjoe1955 I had asked Google can a smell near steering wheel be a power steering issue and it said yes it could.. but I know zero about cars lol. I just hope this is not a pricey fix 🙁

@Coralmist I am not sure because any time I handled power steering fluid it pretty much smelled like oil. It is'n't a very strong smell either and it doesn't get very hot so it wouldn't be burning.

@hippyjoe1955 Ty I appreciate that. So maybe it was a wire near the steering column that is getting too hot or broken? I'm just not sure if I should take it in immediately or if I can drive local for a bit? It takes fifteen minutes of driving before it starts the smell.

@Coralmist I honestly think it is your cooling system. Whether it is your heater core or a leaky radiator or a hose that starts to leak when the engine warms up.
