Syrup burn smell near my steering wheel

Very strange to smell that, it started 2 day ago. Then was fine the next day. Now again a strong syrup smell near my steering as I drive. Any ideas??? This time it lasted ten minutes.

Glycol often has that smell. It a main ingredient of anti freeze. check for coolent leaks, cracked hoses that sort of thing. Heater core could be bad.

@Coralmist I would not expect to see much loss if it's a pinhole leak. Also if it's the heater core it won't tend to start leaking until the car warms up a bit and the thermostat opens up.

@GerOttman Would it do it even if the heat wasn't turned on?

@Coralmist yes, you still have flow through the heater core once the engine thermostat opens up. turning the heat on just opens a damper to allow the fan to send air through the core.
