My wife was in ICU with an infection, but was doing well and soon to be discharged. I got a call from the nurse, telling me to hurry back to the hospital because there had been a complication. I got there and they wouldn't let me into ICU because they were working on her. Through the door, I could see a team of doctors and nurses frantically working on her body. I asked if she was okay, and the nurse said, "We don't know." The few minutes seemed like hours before a doctor came out to tell me she was fine, but that she had crashed. Thank God, she was in ICU so they caught it as soon as it happened and could respond.

@braveheart21 That is really awful! It was sepsis that caused my wife to crater, but she was healthy otherwise and could fight it.

I had someone go overboard about 10 miles from shore in 7’ following seas. We couldn’t see him at all. After a frantic search, we realized he was able to hang on to the lifelines. I was able to get him back on board and essentially saved his life.

Some of the longest seconds were when I was a passenger in a car doing 70mph on a motorway at when a brick flew off the back of a lorry in front of us and bounced along the carriageway right in our path. Fortunately it was 1a.m. with little traffic so a swerve was possible but it seemed an age before the driver maneuvered. I can still see that brick in my mind's eye today.

I came home late one night after having been out with friends, and I took my 14 year old golden retriever out for a walk to relieve himself. I live in a relatively remote area with lots of wildlife. I was only a block from the house when I saw the silhouettes of two animals through the dim moonlight. It was hard to see, but they appeared to be wolf-coyote hybrids, which we have in the area. My dog was very old, arthritic and slow. The hybrids charged us. No way I could out run them, especially with my senior dog, so I charged right back at them, raising my arms in the air and let out a blood curdling scream. The two hybrids turned and ran. The whole situation took just a few seconds, but seemed much longer.

@BizSuitStacy I've been camping with black bears ON my picnic table...a mama with her two babies while I was right in the tent next to the table!!! AND another night, our cooler was stolen by a bear, right in front of us while we sat at the campfire! We were very careless and didn't lock the cooler into the van.
We found the bear's teeth marks in the cooler lid...so the ex kept it as a souvenir of his encounter with a bear!!!
I don't know if I would feel comfortable with bears on my back porch, though...🤣🤣🤣

Being a passenger on an airplane in an emergency landing situation. We were about 15 minutes up in the air when we got the announcement about a smell coming from the back of the smell and the pilot thought it was wise to turn around and go back to Dallas and have the plane checked out. You could have heard a pin drop on that plane. Foamer trucks met us on the tarmac.

Motorcycle accident. I was in a cast for six months with pins in my left knee. They put me on Demerol to take care of the pain.
After the first month, I was taking that Demerol like candy. My leg had atrophied, so the cast was pushing down on the pins.
I went through that nightmare for the rest of the six months. Having to walk to school on crutches. Almost a mile there.
Yeah! I knew hell.
My family didn't care. "Oh! You're faking it".
Nurse said at the end, that what I went through was worse than a pregnancy and having given birth.
The cast was all bloody on the outside.

Near death experience, being the passenger of a maniac driving.
Being strangled by my dad.
Near death experience when I had meningitis.
Giving birth to my son, in the most unsupportive hospital.
Having crippling panic attacks.
Being yelled at and physically assaulted by the father of my child.

The ex and I were fighting, and I threw a comment at him, that I was going to go out with my cousin Nigel, and that I was leaving. The next thing I knew, I was down on the floor, and the ex was holding a huge old fashioned television set over my head, threatening to smash me with it.
I don’t know about seconds. But certainly the 4hrs I was walking around with my arm hanging out of its socket.

When I got too close to a black hole.
As measured from a clock located at a distance from the hole. My personal clock ticked by normally.

Telling my mom I was pregnant when I was a teenager
It was that cheesecake. Massive serving. Took me ages. I should have stopped after the first helping.
