As i read the Bible, i have a hard time buying the narrative that God is all knowing. He just gets way too angry. [Spirituality & Religion]

Thinking specifically of Isaiah and Jeremiah, God is so, so pissed that the people are worshipping idols and not obeying the law of their ancestors.
Like my anger will burn like a fire forever, i will have your enemies strip and rape you, your bodies will be like piles of manure on the ground etc etc.

Would someone really be (or reasonably be) that angry about something they knew from the very beginning was coming?
Seems crazy to me.

It's a work of fiction.
The author remains uncredited.

@Carazaa Your stories suggest otherwise.

@Sharon Oh brother. If I lied then God would stop answering my prayers. I would never take that chance. Also I really think it is much kinder to always tell the truth. I try to treat people the way I want to be treated. I want people to always tell me the truth. Otherwise I couldn't trust them in the future, and the most important in any relationship is trust and I want people to trust me. It is very important to me. Yep!

If I lied then God would stop answering my prayers.
That proves everything I say is true because, if I lied, The Flying Spaghetti Monster would stop answering my prayers and withdraw the touch of Its Noodly Appendage from me. r'Amen.

He doesn't seem very forgiving this all forgiving God.
@Entwistle

Well he actually is to some degree. His chosen people fuck up again and again and he gives them another shot.
It's just that when he's had enough (although he presumably knew what would happen before hand) he is moved to horrifying violence without mercy.

Edit: I mean he kills a whole mess of them each time but he also gives them another shot lol
Entwistle · 56-60, M
@Pikachu He's indecisive at best!
This sort of stuff is why groups like the Cathars concluded the god of the old testament was the Demierge and that the god of the new testament ie Jesus is a seperate entity entirely because the two are not really reconcilable. You have one who is a mass murdering lunatic and one that is kind of the first hippie (in Judeo Christian belief) in many ways.
basilfawlty89 · 36-40, M
@Carazaa technically speaking, Jesus didn't exist in the Old Testament. He's only a figure in the New Testament as a Messiah figure.
@basilfawlty89 I think she is going with the idea that the god of the Old Testament and Jesus are of the same god which gets into the hot mess that is the trinity.

"For unto us a Child is born,
Unto us a Son is given;
And the government will be upon His shoulder.
And His name will be called
Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Isaiah" 9

The Word Became Flesh
1 "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome[a] it".

14 "The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth."

"Free will" seems to be the go-to answer to every challenge to Christian belief and doctrine, but it can only go so far as an answer. Is free will really free if God knows every action ahead of time? Is it really free will if our fate is predestined?
@SW-User

"Free will" seems to be the go-to answer to every challenge to Christian belief and doctrine

Sure seems to be.
It's even trotted out as an excuse for why god doesn't just show us al he's real.
@SW-User Because Predestination is not absolute.
SW-User
@Amyrakunejo Depends on what you believe, I guess. Catholics believe that people are predestined for heaven, but not for damnation (cf. with Calvinists who believe people are predestined for both). They believe that you cannot change your fate but you also cannot divine it while alive.
Carazaa · F
He has every right to have high standards of behavior. We should be loving, but we aren't.
@Carazaa

lol are you joking?
How many quotes from the Quran would i have to shovel on you before they were sufficient to convince you that it was all true?
Yeah, same with me and the bible.
You might as well be Quoting Lord of the Rings lol
basilfawlty89 · 36-40, M
@Pikachu in defense, the Fall of Gil-Gilad is an epic tale!
@basilfawlty89

I really like their creation story too.

This won't be a satisfying answer, but my interpretation is that these accounts are ways of explaining the tide of history, the rises and declines of a society. Whenever Israel was attacked or their society was on the wane, it had to be explained as a failing of the people to properly obey God, especially the sin of worshiping false gods. Enemies attacked because God allowed it to happen due to the wickedness of the people. This was how the ancient Israelites rationalized the misfortunes that befell them.

I think otherwise we're becoming too bogged down in the mechanics of omniscience.

It's also an interesting contrast with how God is portrayed in the NT.
Emotions and intellect are two separate things. But knowing for sure what will happen and having a reasonably good guess are also separate.
@froggtongue Humans are an evolutionary screwup...we do no good...we destroy
@fernie2 we can do better. We've already come so far.
@froggtongue how far have we come? We are uncivilized...animals are less violent...why do we think we are superior...how have we come far? We are de-volving
RedBaron · M
Then why read it?
RedBaron · M
@fernie2 It may not matter to you, but being the target of anti-semitic remarks also counts.
@RedBaron I had several friends when I was younger...all with the tattooed numbers on their arms. I am very aware of anything holocaust...but, we are here and now....they WOULD gas us all, Gays, people of any color but WHITE if they could...genocide is their goal and unlike the poor German people...we are not so trusting of leaders
RedBaron · M
@fernie2 Genocide is whose goal?

@Pikachu God gives me insight who is just here for mocking and who to pray about!
@Carazaa

If you say so
Sharon · F
The bible is full of contradictions like that.
@Sharon

I would tend to agree. Although apologists work hard to smooth those out.
I really think the first person to think up the old testament God was a narcissistic psychopath. All the symptoms are there. They were just so narcissistic they elevated their mental illness to a God.
Probably terrorized their immediate family members into worship on threat of death or sexual abuse. Thus the first converts.
Also he was supposedly an edomite war God. So if this started in the military no wonder it found a foothold were death and rape are war tactics.
@canusernamebemyusername

I definitely buy the god of Abraham as a war god
smiler2012 · 61-69
{@pikachu ] god has shown wrath in the old testament towards the egyptians with his plagues
@smiler2012

god has shown wrath in the old testament to pretty much everyone lol
You just described the other profound narcissist d trump. Worship and obey ME and ME only or be severely punished
@fernie2 Trump certainly does have a god complex
Sharon · F
@Pikachu Maybe god thinks he's Trump.

God is a twat.
Sharon · F
@SW-User It would be if it existed.
SW-User
@Sharon Okay, he is a mythical twat.
@SW-User No dear.....he's a mythical PRICK
It's simply the interpretation of a prophet. You see, the Jews had a lot of shit dealt to them and they worried even more shit would come. Apocalyptic text should always be talked about in context with the times
@Pikachu The problem is you aren't meant to read these books in that manner. You need to understand context: who's writing, why they're writing, what time period is it written, who's currently in power, etc. Then it all comes together and you get the full picture.
@Qwerty14

Tell that to the Christians who think Isaiah is definitely describing the end times lol
@Pikachu You mean the crazy people? Who cares what they think?

@Pikachu That is known as being a human being trying to second guess how an all powerful God goes about things.

When I was 15 I was sure my dad was a dumbass. By the time I became a parent myself I was shocked at how smart he became in just 7 years.
@SteelHands

trying to second guess how an all powerful God goes about things.

Oh sure.
I just don't fins that to be a particularly useful insight.
"God works in mysterious ways" is just a non-answer deployed in order to smooth over the continuity errors.

Or so it seems to me.
Carazaa · F
@SteelHands Maturity its called. Life is a learning curb! Thank you for that great example!
