This won't be a satisfying answer, but my interpretation is that these accounts are ways of explaining the tide of history, the rises and declines of a society. Whenever Israel was attacked or their society was on the wane, it had to be explained as a failing of the people to properly obey God, especially the sin of worshiping false gods. Enemies attacked because God allowed it to happen due to the wickedness of the people. This was how the ancient Israelites rationalized the misfortunes that befell them.
I think otherwise we're becoming too bogged down in the mechanics of omniscience.
It's also an interesting contrast with how God is portrayed in the NT.
