When Did This Thing Called "Ghosting" Become A Thing?

Whatever happened to telling the person concerned I've had enough, see ya I'm off!
I'm hearing it mentioned more and more.

I know and that is why whenever in a conversation with a person here, I always let them know when I have to sign off and do something else. I can't speak for other's obviously or control their conduct, just mine.

I think it became a thing with the advent of social media. It's just super easy for some to run away and not take any accountability or have care for the other person. It's selfish. I'm only referring to those in a close situation or relationship who disappear.

@Magenta yes it does hold a selfish element. If I've done something to upset someone or said something wrong, I'd rather know about it..

Unfortunately, open communication is dwindling. That's the new normal and it's sad. Give someone the respect they deserve and just be honest and say how you feel rather than making them wonder what did I do? Karma is real folks.

I agree with her for better or for worse I believe in being genuine enough with the person if they become involved in our life to any extent in being honest with them at all times. Whether it be a friendship or a breakup or a loved one we should always show integrity and honesty when handling our affairs. Because we expect no less from the other person as well. I think it became more prevelant with the Advent of the Internet in which people can have anonymous connections with each other encouraging behavior of easy un-attachment. Much harder to avoid Joe and Susie when you live in a small village. XD

I know right. All cowards. My old best friend didnt tell me he was leaving , walking away from me when he got pissed or any emotion... he ghosted me for 2 years. I couldnt email.or text him. Or call. Not evwn linked in chat. He blocked me every where. He hurt me.

Well sometimes it’s needed

( depending on the situation) but sure … it is used in desperation at times by those who won’t ever take responsibility for their behaviour … like when they are confronted about their bs etc

I personally think a conversation about each others feelings is what grown ups do until they reach a healthy compromise but hey I’m just too good for my own good 🥴

Ghosting (the noun) and ghost (the verb) both describe this phenomenon of leaving a relationship of some kind by abruptly ending all contact with the other person, and especially electronic contact, like texts, emails, and chats. Ghosting itself has gotten quite a bit of attention over the last year, but we have evidence of this use of ghost that dates back to 2006. Our earliest citations make the electronic aspect clear—setting your IM status to "invisible" so you won't be obliged to answer, refusing to answer or even read texts, letting calls go to voicemail.

The "disappear" ghost is based on an earlier meaning of the verb ghost, "to leave suddenly and without saying goodbye," which we've traced to 2004. And this ghost is based on yet an earlier use of the verb, "to move silently like a ghost." That ghost goes back to the 1800s.

Update: This word was added in February 2017.

People are cowards and just find is easier to ghost with no explanation. Telling someone you’re done with them is confrontation so just blocking them is easy.
