When Did This Thing Called "Ghosting" Become A Thing?

Whatever happened to telling the person concerned I've had enough, see ya I'm off!
I'm hearing it mentioned more and more.

I think it became more prevelant with the Advent of the Internet in which people can have anonymous connections with each other encouraging behavior of easy un-attachment. Much harder to avoid Joe and Susie when you live in a small village. XD
