When Did This Thing Called "Ghosting" Become A Thing?

Whatever happened to telling the person concerned I've had enough, see ya I'm off!
I'm hearing it mentioned more and more.

I think it became a thing with the advent of social media. It's just super easy for some to run away and not take any accountability or have care for the other person. It's selfish. I'm only referring to those in a close situation or relationship who disappear.

@Magenta yes it does hold a selfish element. If I've done something to upset someone or said something wrong, I'd rather know about it..
