At present experience, tobacco is clearly the more directly dangerous, but...
The drug component is nicotine and that might or might not be harmful apart from being heavily and expensively addictive.
Tobacco - cigarettes, cigars, pipe tobacco and chewing tobacco (and if any is made these days) snuff - is directly harmful and has been known as such for a very long time, largely because it contains carcinogens. Lung cancer is the main and best-known hazard but it can also cause oral and throat cancer.
Nicotine patch and vapour alternatives were designed to ease smokers off the habit; but the manufacturers now exploit the obvious commercial advantage of making non-smokers into nicotine addicts the easy way. So they peddle the stuff as somehow "safe" (is it?) and fashionable.
Worse, they also realised the best method is to create the addiction in children by parcelling the drug at high concentrations in sweet fruit flavours. Some even disguise them as sweets - children cannot buy tobacco and substitutes in the shops but these "sweets" are sold through dubious Internet sources difficult to block.
In the UK tobacco-substitutes are becoming sold openly in brightly-lit, brightly-coloured, dedicated shops. The law that enforces regular shops to sell tobacco and tobacco substitutes from discreet behind-the-counter cabinets, was made well before anyone could envisage the "vape" shops' existence. Quite when the Government is going to catch up and close such businesses, is a good question. The Police and Trading Standards officers have just raided two in my town but so far they have not revealed what they were confiscating.
The nicotine in many vapour cigarettes is often in higher concentrations than in cigarettes, making the product more rapidly and strongly addictive.
Some vapour products made by the less scrupulous manufacturers are not only very rich in nicotine but are to very poor standard and often even contain all sorts of toxic impurities.
It may be that these nicotine products are just as harmful as tobacco, but in different ways - but anyway no-one needs use either class of product.
...
E-cigarettes have a further problem. Many are "disposable", wasting their materials including the lithium in their internal batteries, creating a fire hazard by those batteries, and often "disposed" of as mere litter. I believe some countries have already banned them.
......
So to answer your question... Safest to treat them both as harmful, though in different ways.

@ArishMell Some of the e-cigs also release burning material fumes into the vape, meaning you're breathing chemicals coming from the heated plastic and metal coatings in the device. I suspect the more expensive name brands don't have this problem but it's yet another reason to avoid the technology.
ArishMell · 70-79, M
@joe438 I didn't 'know that! Thank you for pointing it out.
I suppose a problem with these is that they have not yet been around for long enough for any, more subtle long-term effects to become identified. For example, even if the e-cigarettes structural materials were safe, what of the ingredients other than the nicotine?

Both are disgusting and both are a detriment to your health.
helenS · 36-40, F
Cigarette smoke contains a myriad of carcinogenic (= cancer-causing) substances, especially polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). These are produced during incomplete combustion of tobacco. The worst of those may be Benzo[a]pyrene. None of those substances is contained in the aerosol which is inhaled by the vape user.
Cigarettes are much much more dangerous – there's simply no question about that. It's settled. 😑

@helenS Agreed. Nicotine, even with the safest delivery system, is not good for your arteries, but your life expectancy isn't reduced as much as by smoking.
@rolex928 I think you've gotta ask yourself: is the nicotine high really worth all the trouble? I guess if you're already addicted, you've got to decide how to manage the addiction, but if you're not addicted, it's a high price to pay for a feeling that's not much better than caffeine.

@ChipmunkErnie I can only agree with what you said. Vaping isn't healthy (of course it's not!), but it's much less harmful than inhaling smoke.
olderuncle944 · 70-79, M
@helenS better ask my grandson he quit cigaretts and started vaping later he was coughing up blood went to hospital they determined he had what is called pop corn lungs from vaping . both cigarettes and vapes are dangerous its sort of what would you rather be bit by a rattle snake or a copperhead .

Why oh why do people attempt to control each other? 😞
That's all this is about really.
BTW I hardly drink, and I never do drugs. This applies to all that as well.

@SunshineGirl I believe that is where the freedom/responsibility balance comes in. That seven billion puonds should be raised by tobacco taxes. And the fines for drink or drugged driving should pay for the damage the accidents cause. (I know thats a complicated equation. ) So if you wish to abuse substances, just accept your responsibilities to others as an adult..And if you want to ruin your own life, fine. Just dont ruin others or expect them to save you. Skydiving is a risky sport. Some choose to do it. But they dont expect the ground to be covered in air beds and trampolines if something goes wrong. Its their risk to take..😷

@whowasthatmaskedman you're are more right than you know.
Yet you'll have to figure that one out for yourself.
Life is change in any direction. The direction doesn't matter.
Did you know that there is something at temperatures below absolute zero?
Huge hint! The wording here is precisely put.

cigarettes can slowly kill you with copd ( I have that) or lung cancer vapes can give you popcorn lungs and you start coughing up blood grandson when to hospital with that doctor said its from vaping ,so now its your choice to make a dumb choice about what to do vapes or cigarettes .
wildbill83 · 41-45, M
@olderuncle944 that's not from vaping, that's from Diacetyl, an ingredient in flavoring...like popcorn (hence the name); and probably used in these weird flavored e-juices that appeal to kids...
olderuncle944 · 70-79, M
@wildbill83 cigarettes and vaping both have harmful chemicals so yes vaping is no safer . i tried vaping to quit cigarettes the result was i coughed more .
wildbill83 · 41-45, M
@olderuncle944 Vegetable glycerin (basically vegetable oil), Propylene glycol (binder used in thousands of products, including pharmaceuticals), natural and artificial flavoring (the same used in food products), and nicotine
I mix my own with bulk chemicals from a trusted domestic supplier (based in texas actually), I know what's in it...
If it's giving you problems, you're getting it from a poor/illegitimate source (probably made in some chinese/indian basement, in which case there's no telling what's in it...)
It's actually my doctor that originally recommended switching to vaping, been using one for about 10 years now, and health wise, it's as different as night and day compared to smoking

cigs by far
Anniedlr · 26-30, F
Both are disgusting habits.
Thevy29 · 41-45, M
Vaping has been banned here. Cigarettes have a lot of harmful chemicals yes. But Vapes have a lot more nicotine in them, then they claim on the packet, and kids have an easy time getting hold of them.
wildbill83 · 41-45, M
breathing or walking across the road to your mailbox isn't safe either... the point? 🤔
HumanEarth · 56-60, F
They are both bad for you. Both are loaded full of chemicals. Why put either one in your mouth
ArishMell · 70-79, M
@HumanEarth Everything is a chemical so "full of chemicals" does not really mean much!
I do agree with you though - both are bad and totally unnecessary. Waste of money, too.

wildbill83 · 41-45, M
vaping much healthier than smoking; unless you're one of those dopeheads vaping the pot/hemp oil
The number of chemicals added to either would shock you.
hippyjoe1955 · 61-69, M
I suspect vaping. I have no actual data but the plastic smoke vapers inhale can not be healthy. That stuff lingers in the air for a long time. I have smelled the vape smoke of some guy standing on the sidewalk as I drove by. If I had to stand with either a group smoking or a group vaping I would stand with the smokers.
benJohnson99 · 18-21, M
Both of them are harmful
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
The latest stats showing vaping is way worse, because the product is unregulated and can have just about anything in it. Not that cigarettes arent bad as well. Just better regulated..😷
beermeplease · M
ask this question in a few more years when vaping starts to take its toll.... but what i do know is cigarettes made my mom suffer a long and cruel death....one would have puked. i'll spare the details.
Penny · 46-50, F
vaping seems better for the lungs but it gives me plantar fasciitis which is swelling of the ligaments in the feet. (i know vaping was the cause because i tested it) but no one else seems to get it from vaping but me. sad little me lol. i miss vaping. no more smokers cough, breathe easier..

Both are harmful. With cigarettes we know, vaping we’re still finding out. To be safest, avoid all of them.
