U.S. Electoral College

I'm done with it... have been for quite some time. Depending on what state you live in your vote means nothing.

We (the country) should have a President elected by the people, not politicians.
ninalanyon · 61-69, T
Even without the electoral college you would still have the problem that your president will almost always be elected by a minority of those eligible to vote. So you will still be at the mercy of the donors who can finance the most convincing campaign. You need a much wider ranging reform before the results would really reflect the will of the people.

It would be a good start though!
badminton · 61-69, MVIP
@ninalanyon This why we urgently need campaign finance reform laws. "Campaign donations' are just another word for bribery. Our representatives are supposed to serve US, the people. NOT deep-pockets corporations out to buy our politicians.
jackjjackson · 61-69, M
That would be wonderful. A vast majority of Americans would support that. My guess is the politicians will screw us yet again. @ninalanyon
DDaverde · 56-60, M
@ninalanyon the electoral college
Has been written 200+ years ago to balance
The vote .it works fine ..
That’s just another thing that the Demi-rats want to eliminate so they can cheat again
Enough is enough!
If I understand correctly you would prefer a strictly "popular" vote determine a winner? So the vote would be determined by a few major metropolitan areas, and your vote elsewhere would essentially mean nothing - which depending upon which party you favor, may or may not be a good thing. If I remember, the electoral college was instituted to avoid the tyranny of the masses.
DDaverde · 56-60, M
@VeronicaJane no that is why the electoral college exists why don’t you and your ilk study American history the democrats want to eliminate the electoral college..
And by the way we are a republic not a democracy…
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@VeronicaJane to some extent, that is exactly what the 'intent" was, but in reality, it was to get the then richer, mostly southern and less populated states, willing to financially support a national bank and pay off debts from the revolutionary war. It did prevent the more populous north from inflicting its ideals on the south. The cruel thing that happened, after the civil time at, was that the north never really punished the secessionists, and, in fact, allowed the South the rise again, but by leaving the electoral college, the 2 senators per state, and then the gerrymandering the USA allowed the minority to suppress the majority!
@DDaverde my "ilk"? Just who do you think I am? You haven't drunk the MAGA kool-aid, have you?

BTW - speaking of "ilk" the donald was on a televised news conference suggesting Liz Chaney should be stood in front of a wall and have 9 barrels pointing at her. Really sounds presidential, doesn't it? (and I don't even like Harris...)
SumKindaMunster · 51-55, M
Hm, sorry its not going your way. But these are the rules and its been that way for the entire election and much longer than that.
Ontheroad · M
@SumKindaMunster Plus, and I suspect this would be a big plus, we could balance our budget in a few years.

No more pork barrel spending (all the crapola tacked on to each and every bill) would be a great way to start.

@SumKindaMunster Exactly why they do it.
How about a President that is a politician and not a reality tv star🤔

@AbsolutelyFabulous And politicians have done so well? We need TERM LIMITS!
ViciDraco · 36-40, M
@fanuc2013 I worry term limits would only make representatives more beholden to moneyed interests because they couldn't campaign on reputation and record.
Ynotisay · M
It made sense 240 years ago. Before electricity.
If it was ended, along with Citizens United, we would have a MUCH more representative government. Federal laws aren't state laws and one person-one vote, irrespective of where they live, should be how it's done. People talk about it "fairness" Well how fair is that someone in a high-performing state is directly impacted by those in a poor-performing state? It's nonsensical and antiquated.
@Ynotisay it never made sense, it was born out of slavery as a way of appeasing southern slave states, to get them to go along with forming a new country
wildbill83 · 41-45, M
or you could just move to North Korea... they don't have electoral college, and their leader gets "elected" by popular vote too (I'm sure it's just coincidence that the Kim family runs unopposed and wins every time...)
joe438 · 61-69, M
We can’t have CA and NY picking our president, so fortunately the Electoral College is safe. Many states have pledged to divide their votes according to the popular vote so you can sort of have what you want without our doing something dumb.
Ontheroad · M
@SumKindaMunster not really. I've also, and currently do live in a red state. The chances of flipping the state are somewhere between very unlikely and impossible.
SumKindaMunster · 51-55, M
@Ontheroad Ok well that's how people in every other state besides the 4-5 most populous states would feel if we switched to the popular vote. I don't see how it makes things better unless, as I said, you agree with the people of California and New York on the direction the country should go.
Ontheroad · M
@SumKindaMunster I don't know that it would make things better, just that it would create a fair system for electing our president.

It's all a rather moot point... it will never happen, but that doesn't change how wrong it is.
TexChik · F
You libs always want that when your candidate starts losing in the polls. So you would like to disenfranchise the entire country to allow California and New York to stack their borders with illegal aliens, allow them to vote, and decide who the president is for the rest of the country? The founding fathers saw this coming (so to speak) and created a system where each state has a vital role in deciding national elections so that all voices are heard...not just liberal/communist voices. Good luck getting 2/3 of the states to change that one.
TexChik · F
@Ontheroad same old BS from a cowardly closet lib too afraid to stand up for how you vote, but you are a real keyboard commando when you are insulting women who disagree with you online. Communists and libs don't like the Constitution or the Electoral College... which is un-American.
Ontheroad · M
@TexChik enough with your childish rants.

Pretzel · 61-69, M
Yeah, even though the vote normally follows the popular vote its usefulness has passed in my opinion.

It was meant to keep the larger states from dictating policy to the smaller states.

But my way of thinking is why should a person be penalized for choosing to live in a larger state?
@Pretzel The current effect of the EC is to warp policy by focussing attention and spending on swing demographics in swing states.
Muthafukajones · 46-50, M
The electoral college was a remarkable idea. It is not entirely democratic in nature. It is a balance against the majority acting in a way that dominates the rights of the minority.
Ontheroad · M
@Muthafukajones So, it's okay for the minority to dominate the right of the majority?

Yeah, no.

One voter, one vote.

Winner takes all.
Muthafukajones · 46-50, M
@Ontheroad I don’t know the exact reasons for the electoral college. You can look it up and you’ll see that there are valid reasons for it.

If the United States had had representation like one voter one vote in 1776 the voters of the United Kingdom would have outvoted any of the concerns of the colonists and the results of history would have been the same. The electoral college forces the elected president to be chosen from all parts of the country so that very populous states cannot dominate all the others.

That is a brief explanation of the existence of the electoral college and its purpose within the United States.
DDaverde · 56-60, M
@Muthafukajones that’s how it’s supposed to work so the under represented gets a fair shake in a presidential election!
The forefathers had it right !
And by the way people we are a republic first NOT a democracy!
fanuc2013 · 51-55, F
If the electoral college were eliminated the president would be elected by the east coast and the west coast. The rest of us would be wasting our time voting. Is that what you want?
badminton · 61-69, MVIP
@fanuc2013 No American is somehow attached to any one state. People freely move between the states all the time. I've lived in 3 different states myself. In fact, freedom of movement is a right Americans take for granted. One person - one vote, that is how a democracy should work.
The EC belongs in the waste bin of history, like slavery.

No taxation without Representation!
DDaverde · 56-60, M
Trump is the man !! He’s no politician!
DDaverde · 56-60, M
@Ynotisay no you are wrong Biden is a lifetime politician
Look it up and learn you are as most people are uninformed..we need closed borders and a businessman to fix the mess the Demi-rats have caused .. I’ve got plenty of self respect pal ..
Ynotisay · M
@DDaverde You're clearly trolling. I won't accept that people like you really exist.

Yea…it is good to know i literally have no voice in certain elections 🙃

But that’s the point, right? Make sure the wrong kinds of people don’t get heard.
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
It is a weird system, obviously skewed in favour of the rural states. Good luck trying to convince them to give up power.. All things considered, its probably simpler to find another country...😷
fanuc2013 · 51-55, F
Seems like a moot point Trump won the popular vote, and the electoral college, which is the way it happens most of the time.
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@fanuc2013 You are definitely wrong with the last point, the last republican presidents all won only in the electoral college. The final tally for the popular vote is not in yet, tRump may still lose the popular vote. Unfortunately, the electoral college has the final say.
Zaphod42 · 51-55, M
True. The Cons will never allow that though…if not for the EC, they’d literally never win federal elections.
MasterLee · 56-60, M
We do. Might read up on the electoral college. Seems to have been ignored in your liberal talking points.
hunkalove · 61-69, M
We've had 4 years to get rid of the Electoral College and nothing has happened. I haven't even heard it discussed.
badminton · 61-69, MVIP

@Ideation He or she does, but many forget it's largely an administrative position.

I think the entire concept of so-called 'united Sates' is where America shot itself in the foot in the first place.

With all those States and all those Districts all acting like they're independent Nations unto themselves with inconsistent laws on the same issues from coast to coast, no wonder the country as a whole appears to be to awkward, so backward and so fragile on the world stage compared to any other First World Nation out here.

As an American, why would you even bother living there when there is so much better to be found elsewhere?
SandWitch · 26-30, F
@Ontheroad
You have no idea what my knowledge base is comprised of, nor do you know of my worldly experience either, which I can pretty much guarantee is far more vast than you've otherwise demonstrated yourself as having.

I don't think that anyone could teach you anything about any country anyway, Ontheroad especially when you perceive yourself as being 'all-knowing' about your country, which I can say with accuracy that you really don't know a whole lot about if you actually think it's the best Nation out here.

I can assure you, the USA is not even within the top 20 countries in the world with the highest standard of living, which means it doesn't even qualify as a desirable alternative country to live in if one were fleeing a Third World Nation.
Ontheroad · M
