Why are people of color so against being called colored people? It means the exact same thing.

They're against it because the people who tell them what to think always tell them not to like any name they pick or any name anyone else picks.

You can call me a liar but there isn't a single time they was ever bothered by any name that they all used including the n word when all a sudden some shem told them to get mad.

So they get mad. They forgot now the n word never did mean color. It means worker but not av sit down worker. Look it 1953 Funk and Wagnal dictionary if you can find one. I looked it up when I was a kid cause I didn't know that that word was the rich people always said about me and my friends dads. And I'm a ruddy skin white. That means I'm white but don't have those rosy cheeks. I look Jewish but I'm not.

No it doesn't. Is white not a colour?
it implies that a person's 'colour', or skin tone, is something that has been added to them. For example, a strawberry is just red, but red velvet cake has been coloured red (that’s why it’s more exciting than a Victoria sponge). A person who is not white has not coloured their skin. We shouldn’t use the term coloured in the same way we wouldn’t refer to a white person as bleached. It suggests white is the default. Language goes a long way.

Not to mention, how coloured has a history of segregation, in the US, UK and South Africa. I don't know why people try so hard to erase history. It gives us meaning to the language we have now and how it's evolved over time. There's still people living that experienced this, I see no honour in pretending it wasn't a thing.

No, it doesn't. There is a lot of history behind slang terms used to identify people of color. And the terms aren't limited to "black" people. Lots of confusion and tension is being created by people insisting on using labels to identify one's self and others. What may seem like an innocent term may actually be used for derogatory purposes later. Some terms may only be used by certain people. And terms we grew up with are not acceptable now. I would try to educate yourself on the topic in general.

@Livingwell

Yawn 🙄
I find it simpler and more respectful to address ‘people groups’ the way they prefer, regardless of whether I can understand the distinctions.

It doesn’t always work, but mostly it does. Who am I to name them?

And, “people of color” suggests to me the broader idea of variety and diversity. “Colored people” was meant to describe “not white.”

I have no idea if that is the reason.
greencompass · 36-40, F
Their connotations are not the same thing. I think it has a parallel with the terms "people with disabilities" vs "disabled people". The former puts the focus on the person first, with disability as a feature of their being. The latter tends to reduce the person's identity to a disability.
zonavar68 · 56-60, M
@greencompass Be careful - just like there are people now who 'identify' as disabled, people will start to 'identify' as coloured. ie. 'trans-coloured'
WestonTexan · 18-21, M
Probably because of the negative historical use of the term "colored". I am sure there are some who don't care, as "people of color" is an extremely broad term.
Subsumedpat · 36-40, M
@WestonTexan I thought we erased history
twistedrope · 26-30, M
History of negative context within that situation? Quite simple. I tend to accept people for who they are, including sensitivities.
I mean.......... you can always fall back on asking them "How do you wish to be identified"?? Of course, even some would consider that racist. And some would even consider my comment racist. Alot of it doesnt make sense. I have had people alot lighter than me refer to me as white or a cracker. They usually hush that nonsense when i ask them to put their arm up to mine and we will examine skin tones. LOLOLOL
Cloud7593 · 46-50, F
@MayorOfCrushtown People are way too eager to get offended.
That is odd, isn't it? But these expressions have their histories and they do have different connotations. In general it makes sense to pay attention to what people prefer to be called.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
It’d probably be more acceptable to be called a colorful person. That seems very positive.

Same reason why black people generally dislike being called 'negro' but are fine with being called 'black' even though the former is literally just french for black. It's weird and has a racist history behind it. Language is often arbitrary and vibes based like that, best not to get hung up on it.
StygianKohlrabi · 46-50, M
I've heard them using that term themselves.
StygianKohlrabi · 46-50, M
@AngelUnforgiven I suppose the term people of color is inoffensive
AngelUnforgiven · 51-55, F
@Cloud7593 Now you know! 👍
AngelUnforgiven · 51-55, F
@StygianKohlrabi In my personal opinion no it isn't. But that's just my opinion. Context means everything. Jeff Foxworthy calls himself a redneck, some people take offense to that.
Reject · 31-35, M
I’m a person of color. I don’t mind it. Well… I’m only half black so maybe people would think I’m not allowed to speak on the matter.
MaryJo1996 · 26-30, F
Maybe because we're all people of colour, not just people who aren't white.

i've seen "white" people get more triggered by whites describing people of colour calling them "coloured" more than coloured people calling them coloured....i don't get triggered if a coloured person describes me as a white person whether that be asian, africans etc who i have associated with

I remember when crayola had a color called flesh
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@MarineBob Now they have a box of crayons called Colors of the World. There’s a crayon for every skin tone in that box.
Cloud7593 · 46-50, F
@MarineBob I vaguely remember that myself.
beetlebumdont · 26-30, F
Wait what
FlowersInHerHair · 51-55, F
We are ALL people of color.

Why not just say people

So-called 'white' people are not 'white'. So called 'black people' are not 'black. Every human alive is 'coloured'. Remember that true black and white are not actually 'colours' as such.
How often do you really even need to refer to someone by their melanin level (particularly non-specific general grouping terms like you are mentioning) anyway? Do names or other options not suffice?
AngelUnforgiven · 51-55, F
Because its demeaning its like saying paleface or melanin vampire.
Cloud7593 · 46-50, F
@AngelUnforgiven It's the exact same words just in a different order.
AngelUnforgiven · 51-55, F
@Cloud7593 again, context! its like using the N word with a hard R some people feel its the same, its all about perception. I'm not the spokesman for the black race all i can tell you is how i feel about it personally.
Monalisasmith86 · 36-40, F
They are born citizens not people of colour they have every rights as you do without feeling like refugees when they have been there for generations
You need to look up the history of that phrase...
Because they have to complain about something to keep their #1 "oppressed victim" status in high gear, especially when the LGBTQ+ crowd starts closing the gap with their whining.
