I think public education in the us is horrible

I'm in my last few weeks of student teaching and trying to get 2nd graders to understand mathematical and grammar concepts that my son whos 2 years younger than them already has mastered difference is my son doesn't attend public school

Yea, I have worked at a school since last year.
In my experience, they only care about numbers, which equates to money.

I am not a teacher per se but I facilitate a phonics program.
I told the assistant principal that "Bobby " is really struggling, and that i think he should be placed in a lower group (group, not grade).

I was told, verbatim: " yea but if we do that, it will hurt our numbers ".

They aren't numbers, they are children 🙄
Can't wait till school is out. I don't want to return.

@Mountainlady16 Sounds like my job. I've had 32 students in one class before. Just me with them
Mountainlady16 · 22-25, F
@iamnikki I don't see how kids get enough attn with this I know we struggle with our kids especially with several kids on IEPs in our class. My kids are both in classes of 12 students my daughter whose 4 it's 4 to 1 teacher to student ratio my son it's a 6 to 1 ratio.

@iamnikki my son also doesn't learn common core bs neither did I. I knew about it cause of reading on the internet but I never dealt with it til University classes that taught me how to teach it

Well, I have experience with all three options -- public, private, and home schooling. I was bed ridden for four years so home schooled by my mother. Fortunately, she was a public school teacher when she wasn't caring for me. When I went back to school, I was about two years ahead of everyone academically and woefully behind in social activities with peers. We put my oldest son in private middle school because they were having difficulties at the public school. He wound up becoming involved in drugs and dropped out of high school. We and other parents became more involved with the public schools, helped turned them around, and youngest went only to public schools including college. Has had a very successful career.

The primary problem with public schools is not the red herrings over curriculum. It is underfunding and lack of discipline. The class sizes are too big, too many of the kids come to school lacking any discipline, and teachers have to spend all their time on discipline rather than teaching. And the only time most parents are involved is when they come for disciplinary hearings or to complain about the "atheistic, communistic" curriculum.

@dancingtongue I know it's rediclous class size wise we have 28 students in our room and the teacher I work with would be alone if I wasn't student teaching with her this term she was fall term. My son is in 1st grade his class at his school has 12 students and 2 teachers

It's true. Public schools spend too much time on Transgender issues, building self-esteem and other Leftist Cultural Indoctrination.
Public education is bad. They also teach many atheistic lies like evolution as opposed to biblical creation, as well as climate change.

@Really There are several options: religious schools (mostly Catholic), private secular schools (operated either independently or by corporations), and private charter school options operated by private companies in arrangement with public school districts. There are basic curriculum standards set by the States that have to be met by all. The primary advantage they offer (other than religious instructions by the religious schools) is smaller class sizes and more disciplined students. Plus they do not have to accept nor provide educational opportunities for special needs students. So they are spared the cost of additional resources needed for special needs students while siphoning off the parents most likely to be involved and supportive and undermining the financial base of the public schools.

@dancingtongue actually most Christian schools in the us aren't Catholic my area has several Christian schools and only 2 are catholic. My kids go to a Mennonite school

@Really in the us how private education is ran varies by state some states still require you follow a state curriculum mine doesnt

raising a boy who’s now in 2nd grade. Basically we had to teach him his math, the teacher didn’t, just gave out assignments and wouldn’t send a textbook home. It was very frustrating. I believe that it is the policies in place that are tripping us up. Have had him in a private school from 6th-8th grade, his last year of private school.
Mountainlady16 · 22-25, F
@cherokeepatti many schools don't have enough books for every student. Our entire grade shares one set of science and one set of social studies books for the entire grade
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@Mountainlady16 he had a textbook assigned to him but was forbidden from bringing it home. It seems they don’t really want anyone to teach them well at home. Every generation is taught math a different way than the previous one. And that game needs to stop.
Mountainlady16 · 22-25, F
@cherokeepatti oh yeah that common core crap too my son's school doesn't teach it neither did the private school I went too.
You are right.

There may be a few good government schools, but sending kids to the vast majority of these so-called schools constitutes child abuse if it is willful and with knowledge. Not only do they get an inadequate education, but are indoctrinated with dangerous ideas.

Private schools and home schooling are the only viable options.
There is a reason they spend do much time teaching evolution , and fight so hard for the right to do it. It is not necessary to know, or accept, the evolution theory to become the greatest medical doctor in the world. They teach evolution because it is simply secular humanism --which is the unconstitutional indoctrination of a religion by the government.

doesn't help when the marxists want to fill their heads full of all kinds of nonsense at an impressionable age...
Mountainlady16 · 22-25, F
@wildbill83 another thing annoying me all this extra stuff we teach them where my kids go til 3rd grade it's the 3 rs. They learn a bit of science in social studies in reading nonfiction but they don't really get into that til than
