Loss of friends

I have recently lost 3 good friends due to who I voted for. I’ve known these 3 ladies for 18 years and we were very close. I can’t tell you how shocked I was, and sad. They have known for years who o supported, but this year they decided to cut ties with me bc their candidate lost. Anyone else gone through this?

It is sad. Sad that you chose such prejudiced, limited friends in the first place. Political differences or even religious differences are no reason to shun a person you value. I guess they didnt value you. Upgrade to better friends.😷

And thank you for Best Comment

@whowasthatmaskedman no, if you are referring to being gay… I’m not. I like men. I’m don’t judge those who are gay, I’m not the sin police.
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@Mbingh01 I was actually thinking more like you all being fans of a certain baseball club and you changing to another, followed by them shunning you.😷

Sorry to hear that you lost friends over this.

I know people whose family members have rejected them (parents and children, siblings) and will not have anything to do with them because of their difference of opinion in who they supported in the election. It is sad to think that people let political ideologies divide their family.
i got no clue. if they cut me off because of that, then they werent real friends to begin with. i have friends in both parties and some in third parties. who they vote for is their business. if we have conflicting beliefs, well, thats what America is all about to begin with. the ability to have different viewpoints.
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
Would you rather lose them before the election?

Many have done just that for me. My stance hasn't changed in decades. I still block no one.

Upgrading friends is nonsense. Especially when it happens over lengths of time.

You'll never know when there's a change of mind. So you'll never have any friends.

BTW Trump was a Democrat once. So was Reagan. Would you have voted for either when they were Democrat's?

No? Why?

People do change.

I have lost a possible girlfriend and a few people on here who have me on their block list due to my political leanings. I try as much as I can to avoid heated political discussions on this site.
No, and I guess it won't happen, since if it was going to, it would have happened while I lived in Quebec and through 2 sovereignty referendums. (Of course, knowing almost 0 sovereigntists helped some).
I have seen this sort of thing happen close to home though. My uncle and his family, who aren't even American, saw a very old friendship w/another family come to an end over politics. What's going on there???
CestManan · 46-50, F
A lot of people supposedly are going through that.

If you look at how tRump is, it is no wonder some people want nothing to do with his supporters.
There is this huge stigma around tRump. Supporting him is similar to being buddies with the bad manager at work.

A vote for tRump is a vote for bigotry, a vote against women's rights, and especially against LGBT rights. Also a vote against immigrants.

me and the one I care about had a lengthy talk.
That was more of a courtesy than a lot of people give when cutting ties.

Supposedly the reason a lot of people voted for him is because they think he will magically fix the economy. Not likely to happen. I imagine most of his voters didn't see nor hear anything else he had to say.

I have kept this as civil as I can, but I will admit I enjoy it when trump voters find themselves losing friends, being cut out of wills, etc.

Depends who you voted for. There are limits. I’d still be cordial, but no, could never be really friends with someone who for him. Our values would be revealed to be so fundamentally different.
SumKindaMunster · 51-55, M
No.

However, I don't discuss politics with people I don't trust.

It's their loss, you will make other friends.

@Mbingh01 The whole thing just seems ridiculous to me. It's like breaking a friendship over a sports team. People who talk and behave like that are not your friends. Friends have empathy for each other. If they are willing to toss the friendship aside over your voting preferences, I can't see how the relationship was meaningful in the first place.
jsutton2020 · 41-45, M
Well, i can guess your party and theirs. Their party is in the habit of cutting off people who don't agree with them yet they claim to be the tolerant ones. I've had a few of those lost "friendships".
If they quite their friendship over who you vote for, they aren't real friends.
Yup .. and consider it a sign of who they really are and how little I truly meant to them. If that's the kind of "friends" they are .. I don't need them around.
I don’t blame them one bit. It’s like knowing someone who decided they were going to support Adolf Hitler. You may feel bad, but I can only imagine how disappointed they must be to have found out who you really are. 😞
uncalled4 · 56-60, M
I would never, ever get rid of someone over politics. Sadly, many people do not agree.
uncalled4 · 56-60, M
@JamesBugman Excuse me?
CestManan · 46-50, F
@uncalled4 I think what was meant was - LGBT and other marginalized groups had made a fair amount of progress but of course tRump wants to set things back several decades.
uncalled4 · 56-60, M
@CestManan Understood, but that has nothing whatsoever to do with what I said.
Ramon67 · 61-69, M
I’ve lost friends and some family members don’t talk to me anymore
Midlifemale · 61-69, M
Well, I voted for Trump too...so we can become new friends...lol
Mbingh01 · 61-69, F
@Midlifemale hi friend!
Midlifemale · 61-69, M
@Mbingh01 Well hello ! Nice to meet someone who voted for Trump...lol.
I'm really glad to be friends with you...but just to think the reason is because we voted for the same guy 😁...what is this world coming to ?
Fairydust · F
Wow that’s messed up! I’ll never understand people like that. 😲
Mbingh01 · 61-69, F
@Fairydust yes it is messed up, I never saw this coming in a million years.
Fairydust · F
@Mbingh01

I’m sorry 😔 that’s hurtful.
UndeadSona · F
Nah all of my friends are politically aligned. It's not even strange all things considered
Justenjoyit · 61-69, M
Thats sad, I am not really into politics or religion, so I don't have any problems there.
I never talk to my friends so..
kutee · T
iodnt tell people who i vote for
Mbingh01 · 61-69, F
@kutee probably a good idea!
I have no friends, so no.
lipstickguy · 61-69, M
guess what? they were not friends even though you thought of them as friends the feeling was not mutual.
JustNik · 51-55, F
Did you ask them why they felt the need to go to such lengths?
Mbingh01 · 61-69, F
@JustNik oh yes, me and the one I care about had a lengthy talk. I believe her wife/ partner is pressuring her. I could care less if I ever see the other one again.
angie8819 · 56-60, F
Your probably better off without them
Starcrossed · 41-45, F
I wrote off some bigots myself 🤷‍♀
Degbeme · 70-79, M
Not really friends then, were they.
Mbingh01 · 61-69, F
@Degbeme but they were! We had been very close for years, and then out of the blue they dropped this bomb on me.
They weren't worthy friends then, I have a Dear Friend in northern California I call Brother, him and I clash on politics all the time, but at the end if the day we still have like minded ideals and interests in other areas and still get along very well.
LordShadowfire · 46-50, M
Who'd you vote for?

@LordShadowfire Now folks, I am imagining that ShadowFire is NOT saying that the OP nor tRump is "number one". 😄
hunkalove · 61-69, M
I block TrumpLovers.
Mbingh01 · 61-69, F
@hunkalove we’ll block me then! And if you have a spare bedroom, please invite an illegal into your home to live.
They have everything else handed to them, so please share your home with them. I’m sure Laken Riley’s parents would approve.

@JamesBugman It is unlikely he will be around (or at least coherent enough) for a third term.

It would not matter anyways, any damage his administration does manage to inflict will be done on his second.

Thing is about his wanting to fill the cabinet with loyalists - they would have to be as crooked as him and we know there is no loyalty among crooks, so how would that even work?
