It's very rare in the animal kingdom, but so are males raising offspring or taking on parenting roles. In species where males do, they often form monogamous pair bonds with the mother of the offspring. Humans are one of the few mammalian instances of this, and even we aren't perfect examples. It's just not that common for mammalian males to try their hand at being dads.
Even in species that do form pair bonds, they often aren't wholly sexually monogamous, but rather socially monogamous. Mostly looking at birds and fish for these examples. I think a few rodents do this as well.
I think it's a wonderful ideal, especially for the sake of child rearing, but it's definitely an exception rather the rule when it comes to mating. Many people manage to make it work, but how much of that is due to social stigma is up for debate.
It just doesn't seem like it's a very viable strategy

@Infamous607 Absolutely. Every time those scientists tell us humans descended from animals, I just tell them to prove it. Turn my dog into a sexy Asian lady for me.
Maybe they all evolved from some other beast, but we were made special from dirt and some dude's rib. There's no comparison whatsoever

@TinyViolins Ok then.

@TinyViolins if lions and birds can be monogamous so can humans

I believe monogamy exists just like polygamy exists.
I don't assign either as being morally correct.
There are such things as hermits as well.
It's the society that forces the morality in anything.
Why is this a patriarchal society, instead of a matriarchal society?
This society had forced the issue.
Yes I would be a hermit in a matriarchal society as well.
And no I don't want to be.😔
Now ask why is being a hermit legal and not forced into a relationship? Either monogamy or polygamy.
Why? Because there are no norms in truth. Just being forced is the norm.
It's the forcing that needs to be changed. The societal pressure to conform to specific relationship structures limits individual freedom and choice.

Monogamy was not considered normal by humans for 90% of our history as a species. Which traveled in polyamorous troops like monkeys or gorillas, and even when we settled down in agricultural villages, it was not unusual for the members of the villages to be polyamorous. It is only with the advent of Christianity that a monogamous model was forced upon humans.
Now, I'm not knocking monogamy. If you love someone so much that you absolutely can't bear to share them with anyone, I'm not about to yuck your yum. And who knows? Maybe I'll find somebody like that one day. All I'm saying here is that it's not for everyone, and it's not natural for humans as a species.
Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.

Personally I prefer to devote myself to one person, so I know it exists. I can't be the only one!

Of course, monogamy is a real thing, but so is polygamy.
Both are acceptable.
Both are acceptable.

It is extremely outdated, controlling, and toxic. Plus it just makes more sense to have multiple partners in the modern world where everything is expensive
