Monogamy was not considered normal by humans for 90% of our history as a species. We traveled in polyamorous troops like monkeys or gorillas, and even when we settled down in agricultural villages, it was not unusual for the members of the villages to be polyamorous. It is only with the advent of Christianity that a monogamous model was forced upon humans.
Now, I'm not knocking monogamy. If you love someone so much that you absolutely can't bear to share them with anyone, I'm not about to yuck your yum. And who knows? Maybe I'll find somebody like that one day. All I'm saying here is that it's not for everyone, and it's not natural for humans as a species.
Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.

What you've stated in your quote above is absolutely correct. The primary reason for Christianity hence monogamy becoming a mainstay in society during the time of Christ, was because of an epidemic of venereal disease which was killing-off society faster than they were being born.
This occurred as a direct result of the 'poly' lifestyle that was considered normal social behavior at the time which worked okay in small groups who never strayed from the village, but didn't work well at all when strangers entered the picture from other villages which then changed the social order of poly relationships.
The concept of Christianity wasn't really about society following God's way to a better life, it was more about the church having full control of society by instilling the fear of God in every living human being and declaring on behalf of God, that there will only be one man assigned to one woman with no exceptions, which meant no more wife-swapping between neighbors and no more screwing our husband's brother when he came to town for a visit.
Christianity was indeed forced onto society ever since the time of Christ, which then made monogamous relationships the 'norm' in society which was done through an act of marriage, which was then sold to society as being an Act of God which of course could ONLY be made a 'real' marriage by the church on behalf of God.
All of this was done in the name of stopping the spread of sexually transmitted diseases which resulted when society began to expand from small isolated villages while introducing new strains of STD's to new villagers who had not yet established natural immunity to those new strains of STD's because of the otherwise isolated nature of society at the time.
