Musical differences in relationships.

I love classic rock, I also like some heavy metal, blues, classical, film scores, folk music, and alternative rock as well. I even like some post rock/ambient music. Classic rock is my favorite though. I used to want a girlfriend/wife that liked classic rock like me but now I kind of want someone that likes different music than me, so that way I won't get sick of my favorite music. I just want her to respect my taste and I will respect hers. Do any of you have a significant other with similar or different taste in music than you?

My wife and I liked most of the same music for many years, including country, rock and roll, and even show tunes. Now she likes modern country while I like classic country, 60's & 70's R&R, show tunes, some classical, Celtic, and even 30's-50's big band stuff. Our only common interest is Jimmy Buffett, whose music lives on. Long rides require music compromises on satellite radio.

Sort of… My gf listens mostly to hip hop, however I listen to almost everything under the sun. My playlist includes hip hop, k pop, metal, punk, rock and classic rock, rap, folk metal, classical pop, electronica, edm, disco, a cappella, blues, swing and jazz, vocaloid, and a host of others, all in roughly a dozen different languages.

Had, to an extent, before both up and died on me. My wife of 43 years were more or less similar in our eclectic musical tastes, although she was a classical-trained piano player and had an appreciation for the classics that I have never been to get into. My partner of 10 years after becoming a widower the first time was not only primarily a country/western aficionado, her former brother-in-law had been a CMA award winning Country musician. So I developed a deeper appreciation of Classic Country. But that is what marriage, and all partnerships/committed relationships, should be: complementary to each other, not duplicative copies.

@Bugbittinbrain Right. You both become better, more complete persons.

I have versatile taste in music. I mostly listen to 90s alternative, 60s-70’s classic rock, 1950s rockabilly and lounge, and bouncy stuff or blues from the 1920s. Really, the only genre that does nothing for me is post-90s gangster rap. Other than that I’m down for whatever. He mostly likes classic rock, 90s alternative, and Psychobilly.

Music preference isn’t a priority for me, though when it comes to dating. I think the only thing that would matter to me as if they’re an open minded person.

Nope, none of us do. Not a single one of us has a significant other. If we had significant others, then why would we waste our time here on Similar Worlds?

Lol! But in all seriousness I don’t have a significant other and never have had one before, sadly.
me and my gf have musical tastes that overlap a bit. she is basically 80s music. i also like 80s music, but, i listen to alot of metal and grunge as well as some hip hop and country. we can find common ground, so there are no problems.

My taste in music is all over the place so it has never really been an issue.

I really don't listen to music at all. Also I never seen my husband turn a radio on

Here is a song that pokes fun at that very idea.

Yup.....my wife hates my music and I hate hers. But music doesn't define our relationship. I give her space and she gives mine.
