The Last Manager, a biography of Earl Weaver. Just finished The Ancient Wisdom of Baseball. Pitchers and catches have reported. Spring Training games begin Monday. Time to get back to life.

The Ancient Wisdom of Baseball is an intriguing book on many levels. The author is a Ph.D. in classical languages (Greek, Latin) who also has studied mythology and religion, and taught across multiple disciplines in various Chicago learning institutions. He grew up a Red Sox fan and became a Cubs fan, two of baseball's most storied franchises with their own mythological stories.

The book originated from a question he was asked on the birth of his daughter while a theology student searching for an alternative to the Catholicism he was raised in: "How are you going to raise her?" His somewhat flippant response was "As a Cub fan". And over the years he did. The book takes various values from mythology, examines the original meaning and etymology of the word for each value, provides mythical examples of the value going back to Homer, Plato, and others, brings modern examples from baseball all interwoven with stories of he and his daughter at Cubs games while she grew up. Intellectually stimulating on multiple levels, just like the sport of baseball. Unlike American football and basketball imho.

@dancingtongue Wow! Sounds fascinating! I did Latin at school and LOVED classical mythology!

It's a book written by Todd McCaffrey, Anne McCaffrey's son, called Dragons Code. In the third book of the Dragonriders of Pern series, Anne McCaffrey tells of the Oldtimers and the exile of their rebellious dissidents to the southern continent. Todd picks up one event from that book, and backfills the story.
BritChick · 26-30, F
@4meAndyou It's great he's continuing the series! I haven't read any Anne McCaffrey's but have heard of them 🐉
4meAndyou · F
@BritChick Anyone who loves reading fantasies about dragons would love the series. Anne's daughter, Gigi, wrote her own extension of the series, called Dragongirl.

A humorous novel called "They came from SW19" by Nigel Williams. It's a follow-up to "The Wimbledon Poisoner" - set in the London suburb where the rather famous tennis tournament is held. (I used to live there in the late 1970s/early '80s)
BritChick · 26-30, F
@ArtieKat That sounds fun! ☺
Uncfred · 61-69, M
I once read Asimov - I robot, and got gripped by it until I finished all the stories.
BritChick · 26-30, F
@Uncfred It's sad finishing a series 🥺
Uncfred · 61-69, M
@BritChick Yea honey, and I could never get into another one all those years ago. I did watch the film, which in some ways resembled the book, but it was not as good.
fun4us2b · M
@Uncfred There's probably 40 books that loosely linked to iRobot by Asimov starting I think with Caves of Steel, Naked Sun then Robots at Dawn...really good stuff...
FrugalNoodle · 46-50, M
My overall reading would be too much to relate, but the single most intensive focus of mine are the 14 completed novels of Charles Dickens, all at once through audiobooks, this will be an approach using multiple recordings per book, as well as repeating certain recordings.

I just started re reading Number 9 Dream by David Mitchell. It’s amazing!

@Kwek00 Ah, interested in it from a sociological point of view or in training to become a fascist..?🤭☺
Kwek00 · 41-45, M
@BritChick I think it's good to know why you dislike certain things...

I've been reading up on political zealots and their movements for a long while now... From the far-left to the far-right... Even though I had Griffin in my library, I never touched his works. I know come to the realize, that was a big mistake. I've been listneing to his youtube video's lately, and I started reading his shortests, basic and most accessible book. After this one, I think I'm going to read up on his "Modernism and Fascism" book. He also gave me enough references to fill up the rest of the year with reading material.
