Here's the perspective of a diabetic woman moving from the UK to US and her experience with the difference between universal and private healthcare

I feel like a lot of Americans have been brain washed into thinking that universal healthcare is the enemy.
Why are y'all so against being there for y our neighbour?

Because the insurance companies own this country. We’re owned by giant corporations here. Plus it’s apparently more important to protect the guns than protecting people.
Captainjackass · 31-35, M
@Pikachu it’s simple do, you just repeat some bs for someone to hate and they will ignore all the stuff they should have in their lives.
@Captainjackass just put health care, liberal, socialism and woke in the same sentence.

@robingoodfellow it is still a pretty strong concern among American voters. You just don't hear about it because the politicians and much of the media don't acknowledge it.

Because the American right pretends they're patriotic and that they care about America, when in fact they couldn't give a damn about their fellow Americans and would literally rather watch them die than see them benefit from universal healthcare.

@Richard65 They don't like "those" people.
@Richard65 I think they care about theselves.

Americans seem to be taught that it does just cost $10,000 for a broken arm (etc) and don't realise the rest of the world looks at not-being-ill differently, as in... well.

There's a huge long list of amazing aspects of the USA but the way the healthcare system works is no 1 on the list of utterly and pointlessly shit things.

{@pikachu] i work in the n.h.s and the british people should be grateful to nye bevan and his socialist ideals shunned in the u.s.a for what we have have in the u.k free health care

If you wanna know the hard truth that's never mentioned (aka the elephant in the room) it's our unbridled addiction to capitalism. This is not saying capitalism is good or bad (it's actually neutral in that regard).

We have a society that not only has a certain percentage who is absolutely fine with an absurd level of gun violence, yet it's also perfectly acceptable (and even critical) to make a profit off everything, including life and death. In this case, health insurance.
Mitch McConnell says he is opposed to anything that reduces the US demand for work in jobs. We're paying more because the Dems actually do nothing to oppose Mr McConnell and the fiscal conservatives. Was you hoping to cut costs,? Do we agree that's good? No, non starter in Washington, sorry.

but...but that's Socialism 😭🤡
Blah blah socialism blah Marxism blah.
@LordShadowfire

Those seem to be the thought-ending clichés usually deployed.
Crazywaterspring · 61-69, M
@LordShadowfire They don't know what Marxism is. But it is OK for the government to build a monumental stadium for a multi billionaire sports team owner. That is American socialism.
reflectingmonkey · 51-55, M
@Crazywaterspring that's the funny part, most of them know nothing about Marx and use the word communism all the time. for example when they say Bernie sanders is communist I say " oh, did Bernie ever say he wanted collective ownership of the means of production? " and then they don't answer anything because they don't even know the basic theory behind communism.
Because Americans are taught from an early age that capitalism is good, while Socialism is bad, despite the founding fathers endorsing and embracing it. https://www.jurist.org/commentary/2009/10/our-socialist-founding-fathers/
