Florida "don't say gay"

In Florida, can a 3rd grade teacher give a lesson that talks about the marriage between Abraham Lincoln and Mary Todd?

Can a 3rd grade teacher give a lesson that talks about the marriage of Elton John and David Furnish?

Seems to me if the law says discussion of sexual orientation is prohibited younger than 3rd grade, it should also include discussion of the heterosexual sexual orientation.

The younger the kid the more obvious the lesson. Most children have a mommy and a daddy. They don't need to know about Uncle Steven and his boyfriend.

@Emjay
I think you overlooked GAY meaning SEX between two men or two women.
Gay meaning romantic or sexual relationship between people of the same sex usually refering to homosexual men. Gay is as much a term that refers to sex as straight is.
I don't know why you sexualize gay relationships but don't do the same with straight ones.

Yes, so did most of the Roman soldiers. It was actually encouraged for them to have sexual relationships with men, and then recruit their partners. The assumption being that one would fight harder for one's husband than if one were the only person in the relationship on the front lines.

@Emjay
I think you overlooked GAY meaning SEX between two men or two women. Always look at the question to avoid ranting for the wrong side.
Do you consider a straight relationship to be defined only by sex as well? Or does that only apply to gay relationships?

Teach your kids anything you want, stay the hell away from ours

I asked you first. Go ahead.

@Pikachu sunsporter has a crush on Branco.

So it would appear lol

It does. But now a teacher may not discuss his or her marriage or family within the classroom if he/she is gay. Books cannot be recommended. School counseling may not be offered. Clarification on a character in a book (should it slip through) may not be discussed. And all of this marginalizes and stigmatizes all lgbtq people and issues as well as sets the groundwork that shows a whole new generation that we can simply stamp out anything we don't like.

Sex education - life cycle teaching - happens from birth, or should. Age-appropriate discussions are had all the time. Believe me, kids think nothing of gay/not gay, trans/not trans. Age-appropriate for a 3rd grader means general discussions, which may not be had in Florida schools right now. Maybe if we raised them to normalize it, we could do better with future generations. Because it’s gays and blacks right now down here, but it will be someone else next, and it won’t stop until we stand up and say, “enough.”

@Graylight Exactly my point. Suppose my kid's kindergarten teacher came in and told the kids she was getting married. Okay if she was marrying a man. If she was marrying a woman I guarantee plenty of parents would call the school complaining that what she discussed was inappropriate for kids. I have family who are up in arms because they found out that a teacher at a nearby school does drag shows at night, saying the teacher should be immediately fired.

My point is that there is no way you can enforce this law without being discriminatory - telling me discrimination is really what they want.
Graylight · 46-50, F
@trollslayer I can answer that for you as a citizen who lives and works among these people. The answer is a fully unqualified yes; discrimination is at the heart of this.

All legislation restricting people and their rights is about discrimination. DeSantis is a good 'ol boy. He doesn't want blacks, he doesn't want gays, he doesn't want educated people. Well he's got a state that can only speak in two-syllable words and lacks the ability to count change. Definitely good for the country on a larger scale. 🙄

@DrPhibes Dolphins are very evil. They torment and torture their prey before eating them.

Republicans have created the "groomer" narrative and have hurt so many LGBTQ people already with it. Their aim is it to hide our existence from kids in order to keep hatred and ignorance alive and well for them to exploit and gain votes from.
Mentioning the marriage between Abe and Mary Lincoln isn't really about heterosexual orientation. Neither is mentioning the marriage between Elton John and David Furnish really about homosexual orientation.
@BizSuitStacy homosexual marriages should not be mentioned though. They are even against the Bible and God
Ah...but the error of your logic is that you are not taking into account that if one racist homophobic party controls the state and the states courts.........then words like "fair" or "equitable" is meaningless.
ron122 · 41-45, M
What makes you think they are discussing heterosexual sexual orientation?
LordShadowfire · 46-50, MVIP
@ron122 Because most of us are familiar with the language of the bill, at least somewhat.
trollslayer · 46-50, M
@ron122 well, the law assumes they are discussing homosexual sexual orientation. Otherwise, what is the law for?
trollslayer · 46-50, M
You joke - but this is a serious question. I don't see how one can write or enforce such a law without being discriminatory. Maybe that is what the Florida GOP wants - to discriminate? I'm sure Florida parents would be up in arms if their kid told them they learned about Elton's husband in school, but wouldn't give a crap if their kid told them they learned about Pat Nixon.
@trollslayer Or Cheney's daughter...........or Reagans son..........but then again it's only a horrible travesty to hear of such a thing..........until it happens to them or in their family personally. Then it's shhhhhhhh...its all cool now.
smiler2012 · 56-60, M
{@trollslayer] i personal have no issue with such a discussion as it is a fact it does happen same gender marriage . only one reservation would a third grader have the capacity to take in and understand this i wonder
trollslayer · 46-50, M
@smiler2012 can a 3rd grader take in and understand heterosexual marriage?
smiler2012 · 56-60, M
@trollslayer no idea really what there mental capacity would be too understand being given so much information
LordShadowfire · 46-50, MVIP
Sounds about right to me, but the regressive Florida legislature won't understand.
