Florida "don't say gay"

In Florida, can a 3rd grade teacher give a lesson that talks about the marriage between Abraham Lincoln and Mary Todd?

Can a 3rd grade teacher give a lesson that talks about the marriage of Elton John and David Furnish?

Seems to me if the law says discussion of sexual orientation is prohibited younger than 3rd grade, it should also include discussion of the heterosexual sexual orientation.

It does. But now a teacher may not discuss his or her marriage or family within the classroom if he/she is gay. Books cannot be recommended. School counseling may not be offered. Clarification on a character in a book (should it slip through) may not be discussed. And all of this marginalizes and stigmatizes all lgbtq people and issues as well as sets the groundwork that shows a whole new generation that we can simply stamp out anything we don't like.

Sex education - life cycle teaching - happens from birth, or should. Age-appropriate discussions are had all the time. Believe me, kids think nothing of gay/not gay, trans/not trans. Age-appropriate for a 3rd grader means general discussions, which may not be had in Florida schools right now. Maybe if we raised them to normalize it, we could do better with future generations. Because it’s gays and blacks right now down here, but it will be someone else next, and it won’t stop until we stand up and say, “enough.”

@Graylight Exactly my point. Suppose my kid's kindergarten teacher came in and told the kids she was getting married. Okay if she was marrying a man. If she was marrying a woman I guarantee plenty of parents would call the school complaining that what she discussed was inappropriate for kids. I have family who are up in arms because they found out that a teacher at a nearby school does drag shows at night, saying the teacher should be immediately fired.

My point is that there is no way you can enforce this law without being discriminatory - telling me discrimination is really what they want.

@trollslayer I can answer that for you as a citizen who lives and works among these people. The answer is a fully unqualified yes; discrimination is at the heart of this.

All legislation restricting people and their rights is about discrimination. DeSantis is a good 'ol boy. He doesn't want blacks, he doesn't want gays, he doesn't want educated people. Well he's got a state that can only speak in two-syllable words and lacks the ability to count change. Definitely good for the country on a larger scale. 🙄

@Strictgram No, as much as it pains me to say it, I think he's a Strictgram hating leftist. You can change that, you know.

@Graylight When insulted I respond in kind. I don't believe in turning the other cheek. I never start a conversation with an insult but I will counter punch.
