To be fair though, he's a multi-millionaire, it's not like he's a salt-of-the-earth taxi driver/shop owner. What I mean is, despite his skin tone, he's basically white.

Rishi Sunak is set to raise taxes. Anagram of his name is High Risk Anus.
InOtterWords · F
@Entwistle we knew it was going to happen

@Entwistle😆 with any tory prime minister tends to be the case to the needs of the poor and needy irrespective of anagram or not

I suppose if we're going to have a ridiculously long view, there were a number of Roman emperors and popes with Berber heritage. But I'm rather struggling.
But let's be honest he's about as British as he is Indian or American, which is to say, not a great deal.
He's amiable, well-educated, and intelligent (and certainly compared to anyone since Major, whom I don't remember anyway, I'd be very prepared to invite him for dinner). And a barking dog for the particularly cancerous sort of capitalist world-citizen.
I see Rishi's advent less as a success for non-white British people as for the structural influence of global capital permitted and encouraged ever since since Mrs T. The United Kingdom isn't particularly British any more (the sort of British in which I'm extremely happy to include people of Mr Sunak's background, incidentally, ie I certainly don't mean British as a shorthand for 'white'!!), but like most of the western world we're living in a globalist's plaything. Cameron was doing great at representing global capital's interests until he f*cked up on Brexit through his general laziness, while his 3 successors were variously inept, mendacious, and mad, so that Brexit, Covid (that bit isn't anyone's fault ofc), and Trussmess caused all havoc to break loose.
But it's ok now, because we've got someone back in charge to represent the interests of finance again, and who isn't interested in the petty tribalism of actually caring about the specific group of people who live in these islands. Phew.
Sorry a two line comment morphed a bit...

Rishi Sunak’s rise to PM shows that racism is no longer an issue in the modern Conservative Party as long as you’re incredibly rich and well connected, and as long as you don’t ask the actual party members.
On a brighter note ;

@Mij_Europe
Sunak will also aim to reset relations with EU. There's simply no way a former FinMin will sign off on a trade war with EU - no matter how many headbangers on the Right try to convince him otherwise.
Am also sceptical he will repeal EU laws as part of an ideological crusade (as @trussliz promised) but to judge them on what is best for British business.
I also understand Sunak will attempt to invest in the relationship with @EmmanuelMacron - in the hope that co-operation will finally produce a solution to the problem of migrants crossing the English Channel in small boats.

@LegendofPeza there are still many conservatives who have an issue with race and with rishi

It is very good and a rare note of optimism from the past two months. To those who point out that he is rich and privileged, that is beside the point. His ethnic heritage is something that he cannot hide, any more than Margaret Thatcher could disguise the fact that she was a woman. Both are extraordinary achievers in their own right, whatever we personally may feel about their politics.
good for Sunak. Hope he does well.
smiler2012 · 56-60
{@burnley123] well really his ethnic culture really does not matter he was the best candidate they had . it shows racism is slowly being addressed and we can all exist in a multi ethnic society

I also thought that we crossed a bridge, and burnt it when we got to the other side, when President Obama was elected.
In fact, the net effect, was the awakening of deeply rooted racism, that manifested itself in the "Tea Party", and eventually Donald Trump.
Wait until you get someone in the UK, asking for the guy's "real" birth certificate.

@Burnley123 I was being sarcastic about the tea party, but I think that the blue bloods are having a coronary. And I don't mean the royals.
Not sure why everyone thinks he's loaded. Sure, he had a bit of money, but the real money came from daddy-in-law, so his economic acumen is "marry into a very rich Indian family, whose patriarch is looking for the proper son-in-law", adding him to the list of people who have not done much to earn what they have. So, his policies will be detached from the reality of the common people.

@Northwest To give Sunak his due, he did have a successful career in the city. Though obviously most of his wealth he married into, as you say.
When he was first appointed Chancellor three years ago, he was a no name. Johnson got rid of Sajid Javid because of policy disagreements and appointed Sunak thinking that he would be easy to control. Sunak's standing rose because he proved a competent chancellor and also a superb networker and self-publicist. Irony of ironies, he was the one to move against Boris and bring him down. If Johnson had got on the ballot, the aggro would have been entertaining.
Sunak is trusted by Tory MPs so they clearly trust him as the most competent of potential option. He is however, a lot more rightwing and a lot more cynical than a lot of Brits think.

The UK is not a 'black' country though so there's still a significant disparity with the diaspora of nationalities living in the country. Have there ever been 'native' people in the UK or anywhere in Europe with dark-coloured skin?
Also Rishi Sunak is a wealthy elite so the right-wing conservatives will be in heaven to have a 'member' of the elite corporate cartel now the PM of the UK.
Unlike here in Australia where us 'white' people are a new invention in the last 200 or so years and indigenous Australians with primarily dark skin have occupied the lands comprising modern Australia for upwards of 10000 years before caucasians 'discovered' the place.

I hope he'll do well but at least it's good the country isn't in total full chaos. I think it probably could be worse though I do agree with others that he has millions so that probably helps.

@SatanBurger For the record, he's the richest politician in the country. He has a successful banking career and he's married to a billionaire heiress.

Are you a racist? I don't care what color the man or woman's skin is. Can they do the job? It has been quite a number of years since GB had an outstanding PM. Most of them came across as complete flakes regardless of skin color or plumbing.

@hippyjoe1955 Yes Joe. I'm racist. He who smelt it dealt it.
hippyjoe1955 · 61-69, M

The people of Britain didn't vote Sunak into power. The average Conservative voting Brit would not have voted in a person of colour.
smiler2012 · 56-60
@Entwistle 🤔so into comparison the british right wing tories are no better than what bigotry trump preaches to his disciples

It is great that Britain has a person of colour as Prime Minister.
Why? What makes a person of colour so great?
smiler2012 · 56-60
@Budwick 🤷♂️nothing especially as i have said previously your race or creed is not an issue. long as he is a good prime minister he can be the colour of joseph multi coloured coat and doeshis best for the british people
Budwick · 70-79, M
@smiler2012 Well Smiley, the OP seems to think that color is a factor.

Ireland, both a person of color (you need to run a spell checker) and a sexual minority.

Justenjoyit · 61-69, M
I think he will do well as a PM shame he did not get it before Boris, Britain has put it self in a no win ever situation with brexit, going back in is not an option unless the UK is willing to give up the pound and have a lot less to say as it did before. Staying out means still keeping the EU rules and regulations just incase the UK might want to rejoin. Brexit was just a big silly dream

I don't know. That's a little bit like being happy that Herschel Walker won an election. It might be nice to see somebody of color do it, but if his politics are bad, he's bad for the people.
