what's a good laptop brand?

no MacBooks pls 馃様

Yeah, ditch the poison Apple.

Lenovo has really served me well. Would buy again. 10/10.

Mine has lasted me a decade. Best financial investment in tech I have made.

Especially if you can install Linux and ditch new Windows and give the finger to Bill Gates, but that is another matter.
GeistInTheMachine31-35, M
@CrazyMusicLover There are free and paid alternatives to windows programs on the different Linux distros.

It can be confusing, unfortunately. Thankfully, Linux is becoming more and more user friendly over time.

If you're at all interested, I would look up guides and information online and on youtube.

Especially when in comes to privacy, definately bet on Linux for computers and GrapheneOS for phones.

Sadly, those are the lengths we have to go to if we want to be free from these predatory corporations and ther ties to intellegence agencies.

Not to mention the spyware, viruses, security issues and bloatware that expose your info and slow the system down quickly if not careful.

Apple has always been overhyped and overpriced trash IMO. Don't get me started, lol.

@GeistInTheMachine I'm currently with W11 on my main machine and I wouldn't say it's too bad, especially with the WSL thing that allows you to open a linux shell, so you have basically the best of both worlds without dual-booting.

The problem with linux on non-server machines is that you always seem to have at least one piece of hardware that doesn't behave properly, on laptops especially: Intel's iGPUs that randomly fail to initialize and get you stuck at boot (or worse, when resuming from standby, forcing you to hard-reboot and lose everything that wasn't saved), the audio as a whole is a clusterf*ck and unless they ditch ALSA and rewrite a new thing from scratch I see no chance of improvement anytime soon, power consumption / battery drain that for some unknown reason is higher.. and *a lot* of things to configure. I don't see the average Joe messing up with the shell and configuration files just to get rid of the screen tearing, the boot issues, or merely updating their graphic driver. There's still too many rough edges imo.

@Elessar Yes, good analysis. Linux is improving a lot recently, but it's just not there yet.

Unforunately we will have to put up with Windows for quite some time longer, I'm afraid.
I'll read all the answers soon thank u 馃樄 I've bought a tablet instead 馃槶馃槴馃ぃ

Dell is probably my most trusted, from experience. Asus are pretty good too. I think you also need to check particular models, if they match your needs. Also checking independent reviews of the model you choose from trustworthy sites is probably a good idea. Also if it needs to be compatible with certain hardware or software you already have, check before buying. Just my thoughts.

For our boys in high school and then college, I've bought Dells with full insurance including accidental damage. And we haven't needed to use the insurance much! The insurance says if you have a problem, Dell sends a repairman the next day to replace parts and fix things. Sometimes it takes an extra day to order the part, but it's been pretty painless.

I'm sitting at an Asus right now, my second (I retired the 1st one after 5 or 6 years; didn't want to wait for failure). The Asus has been pretty solid too, but it doesn't travel in a backpack the way a student's computer does.

Normal use? Mid range Lenovo should do fine, but it's not so much the brand, more the components or parts inside.
I have a Dell and I like it better than the HP's I used to buy. I had an Acer once too and it always ran fine with no problems.

I've owned IBM (now Lenovo, I think), HP, and Dell. I liked the Dell best.

We鈥檝e had four HPs that were disappointments. I finally just got a macbook cuz I like those but my daughter had a dell from her work that she really liked.
@JustNik I noticed that too with HP's. They should stick to just making printers, lol
ASUS is pretty good, Dell seems to be fairly dependable. Lenovo used to be my go to, but I feel like they aren't as good as they used to be. I have 2 ASUS laptops that are basically ancient as far as computers go, and they still work great. ASUS still tries to make a comfortable laptop, I think it's worth the extra money.
I will NEVER own anything Macintosh!! I'm a dedicated Linux user, so I usually go for something that doesn't have an OS installed. Sometimes you can get a good deal if you don't have to pay for windows OS.
I鈥檓 happy with my current HP. I鈥檝e also had Lenovo and Surface Pro. I also love my MacBook Pro.
Ryannnnnn31-35, M
Depends on what you're using it for and what you want it to do really.
@Ryannnnnn just zoom and typing and lots of pdfs
CrazyMusicLover31-35
Depends on what you want to do with it. I'm quite satisfied with Lenovo.
deadgerbil22-25
I've always used HP

@deadgerbil Go to church and repent immediately
deadgerbil22-25
@Elessar is hp heresy?
Elessar26-30, M
@deadgerbil I don't know much about the consumer side, although I had one a lot of years ago and it's spent more time in RMA than in my home lol.

It's my experience with HPE (servers), that makes me want to stay away from their stuff. Overexpensive, bugged as hell (had to replace one because after a *security update* it went nuts and decided to keep all the fans at 100% all the time.. imagine working with three-four hairdryers on 24/7), and extremely touchy (to the point that you can't even add an SSD - something that with literally every machine either server or desktop is just a matter of connecting a goddamn cable; unless you buy "HPE" rebranded SSDs; which is basically identical to the original / non-rebranded one, but costs 2x for no reason, aside of course just having a true/false flag hidden somewhere that would allow the firmware to recognize it without messing up 馃ゴ)

Dell/Lenovo FTW (at least for servers / workstations / work stuff)
butterflybaby7546-50, F
panasonic toughbook.
@butterflybaby75 Do they still make those?
Elessar26-30, M
The sturdiest I had was Asus. My last laptop was from a less known brand (Clevo) that allows you to customize your build, but being somewhat underground it's difficult to find replacement parts (and it needs a new keyboard, the little b矛tch 馃様)

I bought a Dell Inspiron 1000 back in 2004. It finally crapped out on me in January of this year. It was amazing. I think the little battery on the motherboard finally died is what killed it. I wish they still sold them I'd buy another one.

When I was looking to buy a new one a couple of years ago, Consumer Reports rated the LG Gram very high.

I have always used HP and been very happy. I hear really good things about Asus though too.

Repaired mostly HPs and Lenovos at my previous job. Dells are more reliable.

I don't know what these people are on about Dell. Every Dell I have had after the early 2000's has been a piece of shit and poorly constructed.
