Taking just the tip, right at the point where the nail begins to taper into a fine point, is generally going to be the safest approach.
The nails of cats and dogs have a similar structure in general (and vast differences as well, please don't misread this, folks) which has a blood vessel and a nerve ending which are behind the tip and easier to visualize in lighter colored nails. Snip just the tip and you should do well every time.

my cat is such a punk about scratching posts. i want to try getting used ones and see if it encourages him to use them, bc he only uses one that another cat used to use. the rest are untouched
anyway, cats are sensitive about their claws/whiskers. but cutting their nails shouldn't harm them. if you can't see the quick just cut off the tip of the nail- doinf that routinely should recede the quick

@Frostcloud Oh, you're saying that cutting the tip routinely shrinks the lenght of the quick over time?
My cat is kind of lazy with his selfcare, he doesn't scratch much, doesn't wash much, doesn't eat much, but the vet says he's healthy (except a bit too thin). He's also super small in size for an adult male.
I am going to try getting him a used scratching post! I never thought about it, but it somehow makes sense to me.

@JimboSaturn The key is to get it done when they are little. Normalize it when they're young and impressionable. They still won't like it, but it'll become an annoying fact of life for them.

@LordShadowfire Yes most of my dogs are rescue so who knows. Plus dogs are hard because they may have black nails and you can't tell where the quick is.

@DunningKruger Some of his nails are black, so I am in fact scared of doing it myself. I cut many dog nails in my time, but never tiny black cat nails. The vet cut them the last two times. We don't have much money, but I want to start having his nails clipped at a groomer once a month, so long as the clipped nails don't bother him. Thanks for the feedback! =3

@bijouxbroussard I don't even cut that much off. There's no need. We just cut the pointy bit off so the cats don't snag on the carpet when they walk.

@LordShadowfire Autumn’s claws grew really fast. But I didn’t have to clip them that often once I’d bought her multiple scratching posts and toys.

@LaNinaRosa He has both white and black claws, so I never intended to do it myself, out of fear of hitting the quick. Thanks for the pic!

@Nightwings We do our cats at home. It's a very small part that you remove. If you ever do cut too close to the quick, cornstarch will stop the bleeding, but only time will tell whether your cat forgives. 😆
