Does it hurt cats to clip their nails?

I have a lovely cat that doesn't scratch enough to shed his claws, despite having gotten him several different materials to scratch. His nails grow super long, and twice he got one stuck in his paw, so now we get them clipped once a month. I wonder if this is ok for him? I know that declawing a cat, which is when you completely remove the cats nails, causes both physical and emotional discomfort, but I don't know how he feels about having them clipped occasionally?

my cat is such a punk about scratching posts. i want to try getting used ones and see if it encourages him to use them, bc he only uses one that another cat used to use. the rest are untouched

anyway, cats are sensitive about their claws/whiskers. but cutting their nails shouldn't harm them. if you can't see the quick just cut off the tip of the nail- doinf that routinely should recede the quick

@Frostcloud Oh, you're saying that cutting the tip routinely shrinks the lenght of the quick over time?

My cat is kind of lazy with his selfcare, he doesn't scratch much, doesn't wash much, doesn't eat much, but the vet says he's healthy (except a bit too thin). He's also super small in size for an adult male.

I am going to try getting him a used scratching post! I never thought about it, but it somehow makes sense to me.

I had a dog that used to scream even before I even cut his nails lol. Like others said, if you don't cut the quick it won't hurt but sometimes it freaks them out anyway.

@JimboSaturn The key is to get it done when they are little. Normalize it when they're young and impressionable. They still won't like it, but it'll become an annoying fact of life for them.

@LordShadowfire Yes most of my dogs are rescue so who knows. Plus dogs are hard because they may have black nails and you can't tell where the quick is.
LordShadowfire · 46-50, M
@JimboSaturn Yeah, black nails are a nightmare.
WellFrog · 56-60, M
Taking just the tip, right at the point where the nail begins to taper into a fine point, is generally going to be the safest approach.

The nails of cats and dogs have a similar structure in general (and vast differences as well, please don't misread this, folks) which has a blood vessel and a nerve ending which are behind the tip and easier to visualize in lighter colored nails. Snip just the tip and you should do well every time.

I'm glad that you're so thoughtful and protective of your pets. That's really nice of you 🤗

@rayoflight Aw that's so sweet of you to say, this is my first cat so I don't know everything yet. He's also the best cat in the world. =3

You can cut the quick of the nail if you cut them too short, which will hurt them. This is apparently a problem especially if they have black nails, for some reason.

I've never heard of just clipping the nails hurting them, though.
Nightwings · 31-35, F
@DunningKruger Some of his nails are black, so I am in fact scared of doing it myself. I cut many dog nails in my time, but never tiny black cat nails. The vet cut them the last two times. We don't have much money, but I want to start having his nails clipped at a groomer once a month, so long as the clipped nails don't bother him. Thanks for the feedback! =3
Mine never minded. A friend with cats taught me how; you have to be careful not to cut the quick (and look very carefully to see where it is on their claws).
LordShadowfire · 46-50, M
@bijouxbroussard I don't even cut that much off. There's no need. We just cut the pointy bit off so the cats don't snag on the carpet when they walk.
@LordShadowfire Autumn’s claws grew really fast. But I didn’t have to clip them that often once I’d bought her multiple scratching posts and toys.
LordShadowfire · 46-50, M
@bijouxbroussard True. They trim their own claws once they have enough things to scratch.
ItsMeMorgue · 46-50, F
It doesn't hurt them unless you cut to the quick, and then you'll know because they're bleeding. Your cat might not like it emotionally, but he'll get over it. If you're having them done by a professional, that's the best thing you can do for your little fluffy friend.

I’m scared to death to do it so I take her to the Vet tech about once a month
Kiesel · 56-60, M
@Nightwings I have scratching posts for mine and she uses them routinely
Never uses furniture fortunately
Nightwings · 31-35, F
@Kiesel Is it still not enough for her to shed her claws naturally? Mine does scratch too, we actually even have a routine so that he does it every day before his dinner, but apparently it doesn't help. /=
Kiesel · 56-60, M
@Nightwings well.. I never notice they’ll shed. They just get longer and sharp as hell… so, I’ll get em trimmed
ViciDraco · 41-45, M
It's going to be uncomfortable having his paw out and the tips clipped in the moment - basically forcing his hand out into a weird position, but so long as it's just the tip it shouldn't cause any lasting discomfort.
pride49 · 31-35, M
Idk but my grandmothers cat will get in her lap and let her trim his nails with nail clippers.

You need a good vet.
Harmonium1923 · 56-60, M
It’s a good idea actually. But just cut the sharp tips and be sure not to cut the pinkish part.
LaNinaRosa · F
Use nail clippers with a torch and look for the claw NEVER the pink part called the quick’

Nightwings · 31-35, F
@LaNinaRosa He has both white and black claws, so I never intended to do it myself, out of fear of hitting the quick. Thanks for the pic!
LordShadowfire · 46-50, M
@Nightwings We do our cats at home. It's a very small part that you remove. If you ever do cut too close to the quick, cornstarch will stop the bleeding, but only time will tell whether your cat forgives. 😆

I'm kidding, of course. Cats might hold grudges, but they are also very quick to forgive.
