Does it hurt cats to clip their nails?

I have a lovely cat that doesn't scratch enough to shed his claws, despite having gotten him several different materials to scratch. His nails grow super long, and twice he got one stuck in his paw, so now we get them clipped once a month. I wonder if this is ok for him? I know that declawing a cat, which is when you completely remove the cats nails, causes both physical and emotional discomfort, but I don't know how he feels about having them clipped occasionally?

You can cut the quick of the nail if you cut them too short, which will hurt them. This is apparently a problem especially if they have black nails, for some reason.

I've never heard of just clipping the nails hurting them, though.

@DunningKruger Some of his nails are black, so I am in fact scared of doing it myself. I cut many dog nails in my time, but never tiny black cat nails. The vet cut them the last two times. We don't have much money, but I want to start having his nails clipped at a groomer once a month, so long as the clipped nails don't bother him. Thanks for the feedback! =3
