Does it hurt cats to clip their nails?

I have a lovely cat that doesn't scratch enough to shed his claws, despite having gotten him several different materials to scratch. His nails grow super long, and twice he got one stuck in his paw, so now we get them clipped once a month. I wonder if this is ok for him? I know that declawing a cat, which is when you completely remove the cats nails, causes both physical and emotional discomfort, but I don't know how he feels about having them clipped occasionally?

Mine never minded. A friend with cats taught me how; you have to be careful not to cut the quick (and look very carefully to see where it is on their claws).

@bijouxbroussard I don't even cut that much off. There's no need. We just cut the pointy bit off so the cats don't snag on the carpet when they walk.
@LordShadowfire Autumn’s claws grew really fast. But I didn’t have to clip them that often once I’d bought her multiple scratching posts and toys.

@bijouxbroussard True. They trim their own claws once they have enough things to scratch.
